Biography
Origin
Bertram Larvan
Five years ago, he was reading about how pests whether they were animals or insects had been responsible for the loss of millions of dollars across society. This led to Bertram contemplating that if he could devise a way of eliminating them then he could make a fortune. Larvan decided on creating a 'mechanical insect' that would be tasked with eliminating the pest but needed funding for his work. As a result, he approached bank after bank about his invention but he lacked the money to build even a model of his creation. Thus, he had nothing to show the banks who refused to offer money for his work without a working prototype. Thus, Larvan came to see himself and his robotic pest-killer being rejected by society. The constant rejections led to his fiancé Alice Morse breaking off their engagement. This led to Larvan deciding to use his creations to embark on a life of crime. This would see him use his robotic creations to perform thefts that could not be connected to him. Larvan came to establish a basement laboratory that was located on the outskirts of Ivy Town. (Atom v1 #26)
Adopting the moniker Bug-Eyed Bandit, he initiated a string of robberies in Ivy Town, using swarms of his robotic insects to infiltrate vaults, carry valuables, and disable security systems. Each insect was tailored for specific tasks: beetles with strong mandibles to cut through wiring, dragonflies equipped with micro-cameras for surveillance, and hornets with built-in electrical stingers for defense. When the Atom became aware of the crime spree, Larvan utilized his swarms to harry the hero, attempting to overwhelm him with sheer numbers and misdirection. However, the Atom infiltrated the control signal of Larvan’s insects, turning them against their creator and ultimately subduing him for the authorities. (The Atom v1 #26) Following his initial defeat, Larvan returned with refinements to his insect army, introducing smaller and faster designs, some capable of limited autonomous decision-making. This time, he targeted high-profile scientific conferences and exhibitions, stealing cutting-edge technology to enhance his own designs. His new tactic involved releasing disguised “showpiece” insects at public demonstrations, which would later activate and abscond with targeted devices. The Atom once again intervened, tracking Larvan’s broadcast frequencies and engaging in a series of battles where the hero had to contend with aerial, crawling, and even burrowing mechanical foes. Larvan attempted to lure the Atom into a trap inside his laboratory, where the walls and ceilings were lined with dormant insect automatons primed to activate at once. The Atom, anticipating the maneuver, reversed the insects’ polarity controls, rendering them inert and capturing Larvan for a second time. (The Atom v1 #29)
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Bug-Eyed Bandit was a male human of average height and build, with dark hair often concealed beneath his distinctive headgear. In his first appearance, he wore a costume consisting of a light purple bodysuit with darker purple gloves, boots, and belt, accented by a bright green tunic-like vest and matching briefs. His most recognizable feature was his helmet—shaped to resemble a stylized insect head—fitted with large, bulging, goggle-like eyes that amplified his vision and thematic presentation. The costume was both theatrical and functional, incorporating control circuitry for his mechanical insects into the helmet and belt. (The Atom v1 #26)
After falling into a life of crime, he came to be a costumed super-criminal where he went by the name of the Bug-Eyed Bandit. (Atom v1 #26)
Looking to make a fortune, he developed a pest-killer but required money to built a working prototype. However, the banks refused to offer him money without a model of his creation. The constant rejections led to him becoming bitter as a result. He embarked on a life of crime to punish society for rejecting him and his creations. (Atom v1 #26)
At one point, he was engaged and had a fiancé named Alice Morse but Bertram's bitterness and fixation on his invention led to him neglecting her where she ultimately broke their relationship off. (Atom v1 #26)
Though their relationship was over, Bertram did not like Alice to be involved with another man. This led to him considering Ray Palmer a rival who had stolen Larvan's girl. (Atom v1 #26)
Powers and abilities
Bertram Larvan was born an ordinary human being with no special inherent powers. Whilst growing up, he showed a talent for invention and robotics but could not delve much into the work as he came from a poor background. His strength lay in his high-level intellect, particularly in the fields of miniaturized robotics, radio control systems, and mechanical engineering. He demonstrated precision control over his insect automatons, which could perform complex tasks individually or as coordinated swarms. His physical capabilities were average for a human male, but his technological ingenuity allowed him to engage in criminal activity on a scale far beyond his personal physical power. This combination of inventive skill and thematic gadgetry enabled him to pose a consistent threat to the Atom despite his lack of enhanced physiology. (Atom v1 #26)
He was responsible for the creation of a 'mechanical insect' that was controlled by electronic impulses where they were programmed to achieve certain tasks. Initially, he had intended them on being a pest-killer where they were to automatically target and destroy insect, bird or any other animal life that were preying on humans. However, he would later modify them when he decided to become a super-criminal. These machines were built of plastic and steel mesh where they were activated by solar cells whilst being equipped with a score of miniature weapons. Each of these flying insects was said to be a flying arsenal where they carried weapons such as gas, blades and could emit electrical charges. He was able to create a variety of different models of such bugs that included fire-bugs capable of emitting intense heat. They could be instructed to steal items from a person and fly off with them. (Atom v1 #26)
To control his creations, he would sometimes carry on him a small device that would help him direct their actions. (Atom v1 #26)
