History

Caladan was the third planet of Delta Pavonis where it became the ancestral fiefdom of House Atreides who had ruled it for twenty-six generations from the ancient Castle Caladan.

Duke Leto Atreides left Caladan for the desert planet Arrakis to assume temporary control over the melange-mining operations there. Leto's son Paul Atreides ultimately rose to lead the entire native Fremen population of Arrakis, using his subsequent control of the planet and its supply of the valuable spice melange to depose the Padishah Emperor of the Known Universe, Shaddam IV.

As Emperor, Paul ruled the universe from Arrakis and it was noted that his mother the Lady Jessica was granted control of Caladan.

Several years after Paul's death, Jessica returned to Arrakis to assess the state of Paul's empire which was now being ruled by her daughter Alia Atreidies until Paul's twin children came of age.

Overview

In appearance, Caladan was an ocean planet whose surface was predominantly covered with water; its climate is characterized by much precipitation and strong winds, but was tolerable enough to make special and expensive weather control measures unnecessary.

Locations on the planet included:

  • Castle Caladan :
  • Cala City :
  • Plaza de Toros :
  • Atreides Landing :

Habitable land was often characterized by soft meadows, swamps, and dense forests.

The Tidal Solstice Ball was a celebration held on Caladan.

The Great House of Atreides ruled all aspects of Caladan and maintained it as a Duchy and siridar fief under the Imperium. The Atreides ruled Caladan through dominance of both the sea and the air, while maintaining a regular standing army that was fiercely loyal.

The resource base of Caladan consists mainly of agriculture and biomass, with fishing and the locally grown pundi rice serving as the primary sources of sustenance for its people. Other traditional products include wine, whale fur, corals, certain gemstones, and livestock, most prominently thorses and cattle.
