Biography
Origin
Carols Ferris was a female human who was born on Earth. (Showcase v1 #22)
Her mother began to suffer from mental illness with Carl Ferris having her taken to Europe for care with her remaining there. In time, he began to tell his daughter Carol that her mother had died in Europe and hid the fact that she was still alive. (Green Lantern v3 #47)
Following their two year trip, Carol's parents came back on a jet strato-cruiser on the Ferris Aircraft Company private airfield. (Green Lantern v2 #21)
She was then approached by Walter Long from the Federal Aviation Agency who had a subpoena to deliver to her. This requested that she before a special panel in Washington as the government was considering cancelling its contract with her company. (Green Lantern v2 #133)
Star Sapphire
She was flying a plane when Carol came to be abducted by the Zamarons who decided to anoint her their queen where she was given the Star Sapphire. However, Carol did not desire to leave Earth, because of her love for the Green Lantern. Desperate for a queen, the Zamarons brainwashed Ferris into thinking Green Lantern was her enemy. After she was defeated by the emerald warrior, the Zamarons deemed Ferris unworthy of leadership, thus removed her memory of being Star Sapphire, although they left behind both the gem and a subconscious knowledge of her powers. (Green Lantern v2 #16)
The gem was taken to the Metropolis Museum and when it was taken accidentally by Lois Lane, it triggered Carol's memory. She travelled to Metropolis to retrieve the gem and became Star Sapphire once again. With her powers, she made Superman her slave, as she believed he had killed Green Lantern. She was eventually defeated and after learning Green Lantern was alive, her personality returned back to Carol Ferris, but she kept the gem. (Superman v1 #261)
Carol Ferris was working late and preparing to lock up the plans for a multi-million dollar nigh-fighter plane, the Z-25, when a mechanized toy clown on a pogo stick snatched the plans up. She roused Hal, and they pursued the clown by car, but it made a getaway by leaping from a cliff. Hal secretly used his GL ring to put a tracking beam on the toy clown, tracking it to a den of spies led by inventor Eben Marlow. GL returned the plans to Carol, and she demanded he accept her reward of a dinner date. He protested that she should invite Hal, and she told him she would, but the later Hal showed up the better. GL understood the irony of competing against himself for Carrol's affections. (Green Lantern v2 #36)
The Green Lantern battled Star Sapphire above Star City, she was again attempting to defeat him and force him to marry her. Carol had recently broken up with him, and subconsciously his love for her almost made him want to marry Star Sapphire, to accept Carol even in this twisted state. His willpower weakened and she defeated him, but in his injured state he fled to Metropolis and gave his ring to Superman. Superman battled Star Sapphire, and she tried to rattle him by proclaiming her feminine superiority and needling him for daring to interfere with her love for GL. She used her mind over matter powers to reclaim the ring, flew off, found GL in the hospital, and piloted a starship to Zamora for their forced marriage. Superman used the JLA s satellite to track the likeliest path to Zamora and intercepted them. He defeated Star, taking her sapphire and returning her to her Carol Ferris identity whereupon Green Lantern returned her to Earth. (DC Comics Presents v1 #6)
As Carol Ferris, she had a troubled relationship with Hal Jordan, having periods were they enjoyed a romantic relationship and others where she treated him as a cold-hearted boss. For a time, she was engaged to a man named Jason Belmore. The news of that engagement broke Hal's heart, which lead him to leave Coast City for a time. (Green Lantern v2 #49)
This time, Star Sapphire was more evil than ever, and she took her rightful place as the queen of the Zamarons. However, the Zamarons withdrew with the Guardians of the Universe to another dimension to breed the next generation of immortals. (Green Lantern v2 #200)
Still later, Carol became the administrator of Extreme Justice's Mount Thunder facility. Soon, the demon Neron appeared to her and made a deal with Carol: freeing her of the Star Sapphire entity for good in exchange for Sapphire's baby. (Extreme Justice v1 #10) Star Sapphire actually gave birth to a hideous baby, which she and Predator attempted to use as a husk for their combined essences. However, Neron convinced Carol to take the baby away as they attempted to merge, causing the apparent destruction of both entities. Neron departed with their baby in his arms. (Extreme Justice v1 #11)

Later on, Hal Jordan was fully restored to life where he met wit Carol in Northern California at Ferris Aircraft with the two coming to terms about their relationship. She came to ask if he remembered his time as the Spectre where he commented that he did but it felt like he was watching someone else. He came to apologise to her about any actions he did in that time but Carol said that she had survived which mattered. She then said that she had decided not to sell the airbase and that she had been inspired by Hal by trying to rebuild her life with her husband Gil. Carol then said that Ferris Aircraft could use a good pilot with Jordan appreciating the offer but stating that he had other plans. (Green Lantern: Rebirth v1 #6) She had a hard year afterwards where she came to get the company off the ground again and at some point she came to get a divorce from her husband. (Green Lantern v4 #20)

Personality and attributes
Her father had been hoping for a son who he had intended to call Carl Ferris, Jr. that would take over his business. Instead, he had a daughter but over time find her to be as good as a son as she demonstrated a real business head on her shoulders. (Green Lantern v2 #21)
Powers and abilities
After being made into a Star Sapphire, the Zamarons gave her a costume that was worn by their Queen for hunting and exploration. The gem she was given also gave her a range of superhuman abilities such as the power of flight, fire repelling rays and even teleportation. (Green Lantern v2 #16)
Notes
- Carol Ferris was created by John Broome and Gil Kane where she first appeared in Showcase v1 #22 (Sep-Oct, 1959) and debuted as Star Sapphire in Green Lantern v2 #16 (October, 1962).
- In an interview, writer Grant Morrison wrote about her that, "Carol Ferris is his [Hal Jordan's] one true love with sparks and fire."
Alternate Versions
- In Green Lantern v5 #20 (2013), a possible future as presented in that timeline in the Book of Oa. It was shown that Carol Ferris eventually married Hal Jordan with the couple having a son Martin Jordan who was named after her husband's deceased father.
- In The Green Lantern v1 #11 (2019), an alternate version of Carol Ferris appeared in the universe designated as Earth-11. This version was the heroic Star Sapphire where she was a member of her world's Justice Guild.

- In Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Carol Ferris as Star Sapphire appeared in the setting of the animated television series where she was voiced by actress Rachel Quaintance and Vicki Lewis respectively.
- In Young Justice, Carol Ferris appeared in the animated series episode "Depths" where she was voiced by actress Kari Wahlgren. She headed Ferris Aircraft where she worked with the Justice League in launching a satellite into orbit that would link communication between Earth and Mars.

- In Green Lantern, Carol Ferris featured in the live-action movie where a young version was portrayed by actress Jena Craig whilst the adult Carol was portrayed by actress Blake Lively. She was the daughter of Carl Ferris who managed Ferris Aircraft with her being friends with Hal Jordan and Hector Hammond when all were children. Carol was present on the day when Martin Jordan's jet crashed during a test flight leading to his death. During the time she was growing up, Hal took her to a bar after he forgot her birthday with the two sleeping together after a long period of attraction with one another. By the modern day, Carol was more involved in her fathers business and also operated as a pilot.
