Biography

Origin

Jonothon Starsmore in Generation X v1 #11.

Jonothon "Jono" Evan Starsmore

Several years ago, he took his girlfriend Gayle out to a party where he went to kiss her in a coat room when his powers first manifested in a traumatic manner. (Weapon X v2 #16)

Generation X

Chamber and Husk in Generation X v1 #44.

He received an invitation to join the Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters by Professor Charles Xavier who offered to evaluate Jonothon's condition. Upon arriving in America, he was at Logan Airport at Boston where he was to meet with the X-Men as he was invited to join Generation X. Before he met them, he was attacked by Emplate who wanted to feast on Jonothon's powerful Mutant genes but was overwhelmed by his preys power. This along with the aid of Generation X led Emplate having to flee. (Generation X v1 #1) Starsmore settled into his new surroundings at the Massachusetts Academy, attempting to find his footing alongside his newly introduced peers while coping with his extreme physical disfigurement. The tentative peace of the training facility was suddenly interrupted when the enigmatic, silent mutant teleporter Gateway materialized on the academy’s front lawn, collapsing entirely from exhaustion and blood loss. Upon rushing outside to investigate, Jonothon and his classmates discovered that Gateway had brought a heavily traumatized, razor-sharp mutant girl with ruby-red skin to their doorstep. While his teammates frantically scrambled to render medical assistance, Jonothon stood watch as the enigmatic elder whispered the cryptic name 'Penance' before slipping out of consciousness, marking the beginning of a dark, lingering mystery that directly threatened the security of their newfound sanctuary. (Generation X v1 #2)

Chamber observed a growing state of high-alert panic at the academy as his teammates, Jubilee and Synch, attempted to establish a baseline of trust with the feral and highly volatile Penance. Because the girl's diamond-hard skin and defensive reflexes posed an active threat to anyone who approached her, the training staff struggled to safely contain her inside the facility's specialized biosphere. Recognizing a profound, kindred trauma within her silent isolation, Jonothon voluntarily chose to step inside her immediate danger zone, consciously choosing not to rely on physical force or psionic aggression. He utilized his unique telepathic projection to communicate his own deep feelings of physical alienation and personal suffering, which successfully resonated with her broken psyche. His brave, empathetic mental outreach effectively calmed the terrified girl down, successfully de-escalating a dangerous biological standoff and convincing her to peacefully accept asylum with the group. (Generation X v1 #3)

Jono though came to be ashamed as he felt he should have been more careful and should have known the dangerous potential of his own power. Paige thanked him for sparing her the embarrassment of telling the others why he had freaked out. However, Jono misunderstood her, believing she was embarrassed for having shown interest in a freak like him. (Generation X v1 #7)

Several weeks later, Paige invited Jono to the Guthrie’s home for a Thanksgiving holiday. Both were rather awkward around each other, though, especially since Jono never talked about his own family. When they reached the farm and nobody was there to welcome them, Jono presumed it was due to his freakish looks, pretty much annoying Paige, who made it clear that with two mutants being part of the Guthrie family, they treat everyone with the same respect. When the pair searched through some old stuff of Paige’s, Jono saw a picture that had been taken of the Guthrie parents when they were quite happy. Jono told Paige that he could never be like her father and they could never have a real relationship like her parents had. He then left the Guthrie farm, leaving behind an angry Paige, who felt he believed - wrongly - that she needed coddling. (Generation X v1 #23)

For the next months, the two mutants avoided talking to each other. Eventually, the members of Generation X were captured by Black Tom Cassidy, who dumped them in the ocean, thousands of miles away from anywhere or anyone. Even out there, faced with the possibility of either drowning or dying of thirst, Paige and Jono managed to fight. (Generation X v1 #26)

He was still mute when Husk had to leave for Kentucky to tend to her ill mother. Husk told him she knew things had been rough for him but asked him to promise he’d stay until she return. He did and used his powers to burn a heart into the sheet of paper. Husk first raved about his growing control until she understood what he had been trying to say and hugged him. (Generation X v1 #44)

Over the following weeks, the telepaths’ powers slowly returned. Chamber’s was among the first, though he kept quiet about it at first. In his typically, morose way, he just didn’t feel he had a lot to talk about. (Generation X v1 #45)

New Warriors

Decibel in New Warriors v4 #9.

Badly injured, he was moved to a hospital in England where machines were used to keep him alive. During this time, he was assigned a therapist to help Jono in this time where he was approached by Pete Wisdom. Wisdom was coming to make an offer from the X-Men but whilst away from the room Jono came to be abducted. He was taken to Clan Akkaba where he was revealed to had been a descendant of Apocalypse who had healed him using their ancestors blood. This caused Jono's appearance to change where it matched En Sabah Nur and offered membership within the clan. However, he refused and despite this decision he was allowed to leave the secret society. He was then approached by Excalibur to join their ranks but he refused them as well where he stated he wanted to be left alone. Being re-powered, an energy signature revealed that Jono's abilities had increased to the point of making him a potential Omega-class Mutant. (New Excalibur v1 #9)

After the Age of X, Legion came to restore reality with his reality manipulation powers which led to Jono being restored to his old form as well as appearance. (New Mutants v3 #24)

House of X

Fighting for Krakoa in New Mutants v4 #1.

After the establishment of the nation of Krakoa, he was one of many Mutants that came to reside on the living island that was the home of their people. (New Mutants v4 #1)

On Krakoa, he accepted assignment to accompany the Starjammers on a mission into Shi’ar space, joining the crew en route. He contributed power support during the transit, and once tensions flared, he stood ready with his chest-based psionic energy to back up the team. (New Mutants v4 #1) He monitored shipboard systems and maintained vigilance over hostile detection alerts, ready to intercede with his energetic output should a breach occur. When a threat approached, he prepared to project bursts of force to counterboarders or divert intruders. (New Mutants v4 #2) He continued standing guard as the Starjammers navigated spatial hazards, scanning for anomalies. When a spatial rift threatened the vessel, he diverted energy to disrupt its destabilizing effect, reinforcing the hull’s energy buffers so that the ship remained intact. (New Mutants v4 #3) He remained on the defensive, adjusting his internal psionic reserves to respond to unexpected attacks. Upon enemy assault, he unleashed concussive bursts to disable incoming projectiles and protect flank modules. He also coordinated with allies to time his bursts, avoiding interference with ship operations. (New Mutants v4 #4) He exchanged tactical observations with Mondo about the layout of the ship and possible weak points. As the Death Commandos attempted a boarding, he and Mondo abstained from direct engagement at first, reserving their energies. When the assault intensified and the commandos’ boarding plan was revealed, Chamber helped repel the invaders until the ship’s destruction sequence was triggered, at which point he withdrew and survived in vacuum along with others. (New Mutants v4 #5)

During the fight, Jono killed Glob, who was possessed by Switch at the time, and then got possessed too; while possessed, he killed his teammate Fabian Cortez and incinerated one of Doctor Nemesis' arms. In the end, he was freed by Nightcrawler, who kicked him in the face. (Legion of X v1 #4) Later, Jono was then sent, along with Paige, to investigate X-Corp after a call made by Angel. (Legion of X v1 #7) While on the case, Jono shared with Paige his feelings about wanting to rely less on 'psychic fireballs'. In that moment, they discovered Nightcrawler, Pixie, Nemesis, and Black Knight fighting a mutated Angel. When Warren escaped, the two were sent after him. (Legion of X v1 #8)

After Orchis' was defeated, Chamber had decided to return back to London. (Astonishing X-Men Infinity Comic v1 #4)

Overview

Personality and attributes

Jono Starsmore in Weapon X v2 #15.

In appearance, Chamber was a male human mutant noted for having one of the most visually distinct mutants of his generation. His mutation left a gaping cavity of seething psionic energy in place of his chest, throat, and lower face, often depicted as glowing flames of blue or orange. To conceal his disfigurement, he frequently wore scarves, high-collared jackets, or bandages over his mouth and torso. His lean build, punk-inspired clothing, and perpetually haunted expression. (Generation X v1 #1)

Chamber was characterized as brooding, rebellious, and often resentful of authority. His inability to speak without telepathy, coupled with the physical trauma of his mutation, made him withdrawn and guarded, often pushing away those who tried to help him. Despite this exterior, he harbored a deep loyalty to his teammates and a hidden desire for acceptance and belonging. His sarcasm and caustic wit often masked vulnerability, reflecting his struggle to come to terms with his powers and his place in the mutant community. (Generation X v1 #3)

It was said that he was a private young man. (Generation X v1 #1)

Ever since his powers manifested, he suffered from bad dreams of the moment they left him in incredible pain and leaving untold damage to the area around him at the time. (Weapon X v2 #16)

He felt that being a Mutant had taken much from his life and believed it was a cost that was more than anyone had to pay. Jono felt a sense of kinship with Penance for this reason as he saw that they were both victims of the horrors of their bodies. (Generation X v1 #3)

It was said that he was distantly related to Clan Akkaba which made him a descendant of Apocalypse. He said that his great-grand-dad stopped believing in En Sabah Nur who he considered a mad god. However, he still branded children of his family with the Clan's tattoo when they were babies. (New Excalibur v1 #9)

Powers and abilities

Animated by psychic energy in Chamber v1 #1.
Chamber in Generation M v1 #1.

He generated a bio-nuclear psionic biokinetic field inside of him. (Generation X v1 #1) This created a rampant psionic energy that inhabited his body. (Generation X v1 #3)

Chamber possessed a furnace of psionic energy housed within his body. This energy could be released as devastating blasts capable of obliterating enemies, breaking through defenses, and damaging large-scale threats like Sentinels. He lacked traditional organs in his chest and throat, sustained instead by his psionic energy, which eliminated his ability to speak or eat in a conventional sense. Telepathic communication often substituted for speech. Beyond raw destructive force, Chamber’s powers also granted him limited telepathic ability, though his primary strength lay in the sheer intensity of his energy eruptions. (Generation X v1 #12)

After the 'incident', it was said that communication was initially a chore for him. Without a mouth, he was able to speak psychically to others. (Generation X v1 #1) Initially, he claimed that for the most part that his range was limited though he was able to split his telepathic voice allowing him to carry two conversations at once. (Chamber v1 #4) Later on though, he was able to telepathically send messages to people to the other side of the planet. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #407) However, it was said that his telepathic side was not fully developed and he could do so much more than simply communication. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #404)

Chamber was seemingly not capable of probing thoughts but after a lot of training he could use his abilities to hear someone's thoughts if they intended to communicate with him. (Generation X v1 #71)

He could use the bionuclear energy within his body to feed the furnace within him. With this power, he could dismantle every atom and disperse it across space. Such an attack could destroy an opponent's body but it destroyed Chamber's body as well thus seemingly killing him. However, unconsciously, he was able to bring back his disjointed energy and reform himself. This saw him restoring his body exactly to the state he remembered of himself. (Generation X Annual v1 #1997)

Jono was later given the blood of his ancestor Apocalypse which restored him after the Decimation and his energy signature indicated that he was a potential Omega-class Mutant. (New Excalibur v1 #9)
