Overview
Personality and attributes
He was portrayed as being a free, reckless spirit, shown when he purposely repeatedly crashes the Leapfrog. (Runaways v1 #13)
Similar to the other Runaways, he was the child of evil villains with special abilities where in Chase's case his parents were mad scientists. (Runaways v1 #1) His parents were noted to had made their fortune through their inventions. (Runaways v1 #4) Even Tony Stark was impressed with the work of these world-renowned brilliant scientists and inventors. (Iron Man: Legacy v1 #10)

He had an uncle named Hunter Stein who was the brother of Victor Stein. (Runaways v3 #11) Hunter ran Track Consolidated Construction and Containment, which designed facilities to contain superpowered people who were either criminals or unable to control their abilities. Hunter would frequently visit his brother and the two would argue. (Runaways v3 #12)
Powers and abilities
As the eldest of the Runaways, he was the only one with a drivers license. (Runaways v1 #3)
Chase stole telescopic X-ray goggles and the 'Fistigons from his parents' secret laboratory. The X-ray goggles allowed Chase to see through clothing, walls, and even through miles of rock. The Fistigons were metal gauntlets with built-in flamethrowers. The gloves allowed the wearer to mentally shape the produced flame into any form the wearer desired. (Runaways v1 #4) Before the final fight with their parents, Chase nearly drowned and was too weak to go on. He gave the Fistigons and X-ray goggles to Alex, who subsequently betrayed the team to their parents. Nico used the Staff of One to magically destroy the gauntlets while he was still wearing them. (Runaways v1 #17) Meanwhile, the X-ray goggles were incinerated with Alex by the Gibborim. (Runaways v2 #23)
Before Gert's death, she transferred telepathic control of Old Lace to Chase. (Runaways v2 #18) Thus, he shared an empathic link with the dinosaur, so both suffer from one another's injuries and benefit when the other heals. Chase and Old Lace's minds are also directly connected so the dinosaur can telepathically communicate thoughts and feelings to her master. (Runaways v2 #18) Old Lace is engineered to follow Chase's every mental command though she can express dissatisfaction; to date, Old Lace has directly disobeyed only one of Chase's orders and was able to only with Karolina's help. (Runaways v2 #23)
Chase has also used Nico's Staff of One against Nico. (Runaways v2 #23)
Later on, Chase would come to make use of a time machine to travel through time. He returned shortly afterward with newly built Fistigons of his own design; to protect the team from the Yorkes' by conjuring fire and electricity to defeat them. And then protects the Leapfrog from a barrage of missiles by using the Fistigons to shoot out missiles of their own. (Runaways v2 #30)
At one point, Chase obtained Darkhawk's powers, as the original owner was separated from the amulet. After escaping the arena, Chase returned the amulet to its original owner. (Avengers Arena v1 #18)

Television
- In Runaways, Chase Stein appeared in the setting of the live-action Hulu television series where he was portrayed by actor Gregg Sulkin. Chase was born the son of Janet and Victor Stein in 2000. Growing up, Chase frequently played with the children of the other members of PRIDE. He had a troubled childhood, resenting his father for the abuse he gave to his mother and him. Additionally, Chase was ignored by his father, who was more focused on his work than anything else. One day, Victor promised Chase that he would make it to the city championship to see him play, but failed to do so. Chase won and received the trophy, waiting for his father to take him home. In the car, the two argued, leading Chase to get punched twice. When Victor was at work, Chase and Janet often went to a certain location to watch the northern lights. It was there where Janet taught Chase about constellations. He also did four years of sailing classes. In 2007, the Hernandez's were killed in an explosion. Chase attended the funeral, but was mostly oblivious to the tragic events that had transpired. In middle school, Chase attended Alex Wilder's sixth grade party. Wilder gave everyone an R2-D2 flashdrive. Once in the eighth grade, Stein and Gert Yorkes were astronomy partners, with Yorkes making most of the stargazing because Stein spent the entire time playing Candy Crush and flirting with Eiffel. In 2015, Amy Minoru died. Although everyone attended the funeral, Alex Wilder was nowhere to be found, which caused everyone to stop being friends. In high school, Stein was a part of the lacrosse team. He sat outside the school and argued with his teammates about which lacrosse stick was better. Karolina Dean then walked by them and he said hello. In the morning, while he was practicing, Chase was told by his mother Janet that she and his father Victor were expecting him for breakfast. Chase was praised by his father for his victory in a lacrosse game, but also heavily chastised for having a poor grade in a Spanish test. Once breakfast was over, Chase returned to his bedroom and prepared to leave for school, criticizing his father in front of Janet despite the latter's attempt to persuade him that his father still loved him somehow.
