Biography
Origin
Douglas Ramsey
During those years, he came to meet Kitty Pryde in a dance class at Stevie Hunter’s studio. Doug and Kitty connected over their shared love for computers, video games and the challenges of 'hacking'. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #177)
New Mutants
Unbeknownst to Doug, Kitty was a mutant and a member of the X-Men. Doug was also unaware that he himself was a mutant with an intuitive talent for languages that enhanced his own natural skills with computer programming. Recognizing Doug’s talent, Kitty sought Doug’s help in hacking into the personal systems of the Hellfire Club’s leader, Sebastian Shaw. To Kitty’s surprise, this led them into a database maintained by Project: Wideawake. They inadvertently seized control of a Sentinel and tipped the Project’s senior staff to their presence. This included Sebastian Shaw himself. Wideawake’s director, Henry Peter Gyrich ordered a trace on whoever managed to break into their systems. (New Mutants v1 #13)
While Douglas became a friend to the New Mutants children, they kept their mutant powers and costumed personas from him. However, one night when the New Mutants were alone in the mansion, the techno-organic alien mutant, Warlock, arrived and battled the New Mutants in the confusion that erupted. The mutants asked Ramsey for help in communicating with the alien, and revealed their secrets to him. Douglas succeeded in talking with Warlock, and both the alien and Ramsey soon joined the team. Ramsey chose the code-name Cypher, as his mutant ability allowed him to decipher codes and languages. In the School for Gifted Youngsters, the New Mutants were tutored by Professor X and trained in the use of their powers in the Danger Room. Warlock and Cypher shared a close bond, often sticking close together in battle. Doug often felt useless in battle, even though his powers often came more in handy than others. (New Mutants v1 #21)
But for every time that his passive powers proved valuable, there were multiple where he was vulnerable and in harm’s way. Doug longed to be an active part of the team but realized from the moment he joined that he was the team’s weak link. The New Mutants’ foes realized it as well. When the malevolent psychic being Amahl Farouk was defeated by the New Mutants, he possessed Doug thinking that no one would notice if he left the school soon after. Doug was freed from the Shadow King’s influence but this encounter merely reinforced his belief that he was worthless to his teammates. (New Mutants v1 #34)
Doug’s feelings of inadequacy were reinforced once more when the team was abducted by the Asgardian Enchantress. While trying to escape the Enchantress’ clutches Magik’s teleportation spell scattered the New Mutants throughout Asgard. Doug found himself in a mead hall where he proved unable to defend himself against the superhumanly strong Asgardians. He was enslaved by the owner of the establishment and forced to work as kitchen help. He was rescued by Warlock and together they searched Asgard to try and reunite their team. It was during this adventure that Warlock and Cypher first joined together in battle, with Warlock forming a protective armor around Doug that allowed him to more fully participate in combat. Dubbing them the 'Team Supreme', this partnership helped fulfill Doug’s desire to pull his weight with the team and join in their adventures. (New Mutants Special Edition v1 #1)
It was also during the New Mutants’ exploits in Asgard that Warlock first merged his techno-organic form with Doug. After sustaining life-threatening damage, Warlock was in dire need of 'lifeglow'. To Warlock’s surprise, Cypher selflessly offered a portion of his own to tide Warlock over. It allowed the pair to reunite with their teammates and the X-Men but the dangerous tactic of merging their forms would prove to have lasting and unforeseen effects on Doug’s physiology. (Uncanny X-Men Annual v1 #9)
When the New Mutants returned to Earth, they found that Professor Xavier was gone and in his place as headmaster was the X-Men’s perennial foe, Magneto. Magneto immediately set to assessing the New Mutants’ abilities. However, in their first training session in the Danger Room, Magneto told Cypher that there was no need for him to participate. This infuriated Doug who felt that he had finally earned his spot on the team and needed to learn how to handle himself in combat situations. Magneto realized his mistake with Doug almost immediately but had little chance to make amends as a far greater threat was looming. (New Mutants v1 #35)
Douglock
Douglock emerged when the Phalanx resurrected Warlock using the ashes of Cypher’s body, infusing him with both Warlock’s techno‑organic physiology and Cypher’s genetic and mental engrams. He first appeared beside Excalibur in their orbiting stronghold late, his memory fragmented but filled with Cypher’s warmth and kindness—making him believe he was a new, unique being rather than his alien progenitor. (Excalibur v1 #78)
On Muir Island, Douglock grappled with his identity while integrating into the team. He maintained Warlock’s shapeshifting biomatter but spoke with Cypher’s cadence and expressions, often calling his teammates 'friends'. He formed a close bond with Wolfsbane and Kitty Pryde, offering solace and translation in times of crisis—particularly as he tried to understand why he felt both alien and intimately human. During the pinnacle of the Phalanx menace, Douglock played a pivotal role in the raid on the Babel Spire. He overrode the hive mind protocol, breaking free from the Phalanx’s influence with the aid of Zero. Amid the chaos, he used his techno‑organic abilities to sabotage the beacon’s core, severing the connection the Phalanx sought to establish with the Technarchy and saving the planet from assimilation. (Excalibur v1 #82)
Later, in the London Hellfire Club incident, Douglock was abducted by operatives aiming to exploit his unique bio‑signature to power a demon‑summoning ritual. He was used as a conduit for arcane energy but resisted the control, forcing Excalibur to intervene. His defiance helped prevent the ritual, though it left him shaken and led Kitty to finally accept that he was not the original Doug Ramsey. (Excalibur v1 #99)
In the aftermath, Douglock remained a valued Excalibur member—wrestling with fragmented dreams of death and assimilation, trying to define his own identity. Over time, Warlock’s original consciousness resurfaced, revealing that the entity was indeed Warlock restored, but forever altered by the memories and emotions of Cypher. Though he retained Cypher’s translation gifts and memories, the pure Cypher persona was gone, replaced by a hybrid being walking a new path. (Excalibur v1 #104)
Return
Given recent events, Doug was put under observation before the rest of the X-Men could determine if Selene’s influence was truly gone from him. He explained to them that his powers allowed him to take control of the TO virus within him and reduce its influence till it was almost undetectable. He was allowed to walk free on the island but, when he went to meet with Magma, he was met with a hostile reception. The two soon made amends when he spoke in a new language he created just for her. (New Mutants v3 #9)
After the war with Bastion was over, Warlock decided to purge the energy he stole from Hodge as he felt guilty. Knowing that this was a symbolic event for Warlock, Doug made sure to stay and watch the whole thing to ensure the burden was eased for his friend. (New Mutants v3 #15)
When Kuurth attacked San Francisco, Cyclops sent Dani Moonstar to meet with Asgardian death-goddess Hela, in the hope that she can explain what happens. However, on the way to Las Vegas, Dani was forcibly moved to Hel. (New Mutants v3 #29)
Just as the New Mutant’s began to relax, they were attacked by Tyro, a member of Warlock’s race who was struggling to deal with his abilities. Doug’s experience at rewriting the TO virus was key to helping Tyro take control once more. (New Mutants v3 #50)
All-New X-Factor
Even though Doug had triumphed over Truefriend, he still couldn’t shake the belief that he would someday turn into the crazed megalomaniac. He quit the New Mutants and moved to a remote cabin in the woods so he could be alone. The isolation did not help him, as he constantly focused on what might be and he was plagued by nightmares of his encounter with the Truefriend. He finally snapped and decided to kill himself but, by pure coincidence, the newly formed X-Factor showed up on his doorstep looking for help. Warlock had apparently left the New Mutants shortly after Doug and reconnected with his father Magus. X-Factor had crossed swords with Magus recently and came to Doug for insight into why Warlock would be working alongside him. Doug explained to the team he hadn’t been in contact with Warlock, but the robotic Danger informed him that his friend had been keeping tabs on him via a small piece of TO circuitry in his heart. Before anyone could react, Danger grabbed Doug and surgically removed the device from him, leaving minimal damage except a shocked audience. Doug was intrigued and helped X-Factor by using the device implanted in him to track Warlock down. Doug and the team confronted the Magus and Warlock, discovering that the Technarchy had been mostly wiped out by a virus. Warlock informed Doug that he implanted a piece of himself in his friend as he was worried at Doug’s mental state and he wanted to keep track of him. The two friends made up again and, with nothing else better to do, decided to join X-Factor. (All-New X-Factor v1 #6)
Not long after, Doug discovered a young girl called Georgia was in need of help from her father, Scott Dakei, a prominent anti-mutant spokesman. The team travelled to where Georgia was being kept and broke into her house, with the intention of extracting her for her own safety. However, when the team confronted Georgia, they found she didn’t want to leave, causing Cypher to drag her out forcibly. Georgia fought back and used her own mutant powers to drain all the moisture from his body, seemingly killing him. Unaware she was a mutant, Georgia didn’t realize she had done anything wrong, with X-Factor begging her to reverse what she did. The young girl relented and used her powers once more and restored the moisture in Cypher’s body, without any long-lasting effects. Upon seeing his daughter’s powers in action, Georgia’s father told X-Factor to take her away, as he didn’t want anything to do with her. (All-New X-Factor v1 #8)
House of X
The returned Professor Xavier came to take Cypher to the living island of Krakoa where he stated it was no longer their enemy. In fact, it was going to be the foundation of a Mutant nation and asked Douglas to develop a rapport with the island so that they could work together. Seeing this as an ambitious task, he agreed and started to work in developing the ability to communicate with Krakoa thus becoming a bridge to working with it. Cypher was tasked with building an interface system on Krakoa to allow the mutants to inhabit the island. Also, Cypher helped creating four different systems, involving transit, monitoring, defense and observation. (Powers of X v1 #4) He was invaluable in developing the Krakoan language using the aid of Sage and Krakoa itself. (House of X v1 #1) Moira and Charles Xavier then tasked several technopath mutants such as Cypher, Sage, and Trinary, with creating a system called 'Sleeping Giant' to monitor for Nimrod technological thresholds being reached and/or the attempted creation of a 'Mother Mold', a replicating, adaptive Sentinel factory that was self-aware and capable of creating other Sentinels. (House of X v1 #3) Distrustful of Xavier, Cypher partially fused with Warlock. Convincing everyone the fusion was permanent, he had Warlock terraform the planet for him while also fusing with Krakoa and becoming its biosphere, allowing him to hear everything in the island and eavesdrop on Xavier. Cypher also created a secret flower for Xavier used to build Moira's No-Space, a secret place for Moira MacTaggert to live and she, Xavier, and Magneto could talk in private without even Krakoa hearing, but it was secretly accessible to Warlock. (Inferno v2 #3) Douglas was later seen amongst the other Quiet Council members at the assembly's initial gathering. Both Cypher and Krakoa represented the interests of the entity itself and the needs of the nation as a whole. The Council established three new core laws of Krakoa, one of which forbids the murder of humans. (House of X v1 #6)
From Saturnyne's prophecy, they came to determine that Doug was chosen to be one of the champions of Krakoa to participate in the Contest of Swords. This saw Warlock taking the form of a blade where he underwent training under Magik though some were opposed to him participating in the tournament. This included Krakoa who felt Ramsey was too valuable to fight in the contest whilst those like Magik and Exodus felt he was not a fighter. Despite Magik's training, she felt that he would die in the match in Otherworld which had the danger that his demise might be permanent due to the nature of that inter-dimensional realm that affected the ability of the Resurrection Protocols to bring someone back to life. (New Mutants v4 #13)
During the dinner, Doug wanted to try some of the food Logan's plate whilst his attention was diverted but quickly found that it was poisoned by the Arraki group with War admitting she had intended to kill the Wolverine. Unable to breath, Isca came to open an airway in Doug's throat and the White Sword decided to heal Ramsey after being disgusted at the underhanded tactic of War. (Marauders v1 #15) Afterwards, the tournament began with the first match being between Betsy Braddock and Isca the Unbeaten where Captain Britain lost against her Arrako foe where she was shattered into pieces. The next match was between Cypher and Bei the Blood Moon though this was not an actual battle but instead a wedding arranged between the pair. The match was determined by the wedding vows of the two where Doug became smitten with Bei after becoming fascinated by her means of communication. The match ended with a draw where both earned a point for their respective factions as the two became officially married as a result. (Excalibur v4 #14) When Annihilation went forward with her plan to invade Krakoa he convinced Bei to betray Arakko and help them fight of the invasion. (Excalibur v4 #15) After Arrako was defeated, Doug returned to Krakoa with his new wife. (X of Swords: Destruction v1 #1)
Krakoa and Doug started to wonder if he was judged to harshly, so he made mental contact with him in the pit through Krakoa. They had several meetings that all ended with Victor trying to kill him and Krakoa erasing his memories, eventually Victor agreed to his offer and was given his own mental world. (Sabretooth v4 #1) After spying on her for some time, Doug and Warlock found out Mystique and Destiny were planning on attacking Moira in her secret home, depowering her so she couldn't resurrect and then killing her. Since he knew she was plotting against mutant-kind, he allowed them to depower her but before they could kill her, he, Warlock and Bei broke in and stopped them, siting the fact that now that she's depowered the first law of Krakoa 'Murder No Man' falls into effect. They then forced Mystique and Destiny to give Moira a chance to escape before making good on their threat to hunt her down (Inferno v2 #4) Warlock would later start sitting in with Cypher at council meetings. (Legion of X v1 #1)
After the events of the Sins of Sinister timeline, the majority of the Quiet Council was revealed to be possibly under the influence of Mr. Sinister. They voted to dismantle the current council and the Five until a solution could be found. For so-far unknown reasons, Krakoa acted quickly and used its vines to trap Cypher into the prison Pit, possibly to protected him from upcoming danger. Hope Summers tried to use her powers to copy Cypher's powers to try to talk to Krakoa and convince him to release Cypher, but without luck. (Immortal X-Men v1 #13)
From the Ashes
Douglas walked through the ancient pyramid’s winding corridors alongside Emma Frost, Forge, and Laura Kinney. He had quietly begun deciphering the subtle patterns in the shifting stone labyrinth, recognizing the pyramid’s subtle—but dangerous—language. As a collapsed wall nearly crushed him, Laura yanked him to safety. He offered a nervous apology and admitted surprise at being personally invited by Apocalypse himself—an honor that both puzzled and unnerved him. (X‑Men: Heir of Apocalypse v1 #1) In the scorched desert town of Aswan, Douglas stood firm as genocide descended in the form of Apocalypse’s son. Amid crashing debris and panicked civilians, he calmly addressed frightened locals in Egyptian Arabic. He urged them to avoid unstable buildings until repairs were completed, coordinating plans with engineers he could still unmistakably trust. His efforts drew mockery from Sinister but drew respect from Forge—and reinforced Douglas’s role as translator and mediator under fire. (X‑Men: Heir of Apocalypse v1 #2) Armed with words and wonder, Douglas pressed forward through further pyramid traps. He correctly interpreted shifting corridors and successfully disarmed dart traps intended to kill or maim. When Wolverine challenged his presence, Douglas defended his value: logic and language were vital—not just brute strength. His self-assurance grew as they pressed deeper into Apocalypse’s trial pit. (X‑Men: Heir of Apocalypse v1 #3) Apocalypse confronted Douglas directly in a psychic illusion of Krakoa’s grove. Douglas forced himself to revisit feelings of guilt and loss after Krakoa’s fall—tears streamed as he bared his soul. Apocalypse responded by sending Sentinels to strike Douglas and destroy the illusion, seeking to crush his faith. Though terrified, Douglas remained defiant, standing his ground. Apocalypse ultimately declared Douglas Revelation, progenitor of a new vision for mutantkind—valuing connection and diplomacy over dominance. (X‑Men: Heir of Apocalypse v1 #4)
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Douglas Ramsey had appeared as an unassuming, slightly awkward teenager, standing around 5'9" with a slender, wiry frame that spoke of quiet intellect rather than physical prowess. He wore plain clothing typical of a high school student—jeans, T-shirts, and a sweater—his blond hair falling loosely around thoughtful blue eyes. He moved with a hesitant posture, often shifting his weight from one foot to the other, as though his body was uncertain of its place in action. His face carried a mixture of curiosity and introspection, reflecting the mind constantly translating and deciphering the world around him. (New Mutants v1 #13) After being chosen as Apocalypse's successor, he came to take the name Revelation for himself. (X-Men: Heir of Apocalypse v1 #4)
In personality, Douglas Ramsey was gentle, shy, and intensely empathetic—a natural confidant who listened more than he spoke. He displayed a deep-seated kindness, often volunteering support before even fully understanding the situation. His delight at discovering his mutant ability came as a surprise, but he approached it with both awe and humility. He frequently questioned his own value, aware that his talents were cerebral rather than combative, and worried he was a liability. Despite this, he never hesitated to step forward when his word—or computer code—could save lives. He bonded deeply with Warlock, offering support in moments of danger, and cared clearly for Kitty Pryde and Rahne Sinclair. Behind his reticence lay a delicate courage: he faced crises not with fists, but with intellect and heart, revealing an inner strength grounded in compassion rather than muscle. (New Mutants v1 #13)
Despite the communication barrier, Cypher appears to be enjoying the marriage. (New Mutants v4 #15)
Powers and abilities
As a mutant, Doug Ramsey possessed an extraordinary and subconscious mastery of language in all its forms. He intuitively decoded any spoken or written language—human, alien, or even computer code—without prior exposure or study. His mutant gift extended to body language, enabling him to grasp hidden meanings, emotional subtext, and intent in speech. This capacity allowed him to subconsciously process information through leaps of logic, arriving at rapid translations or interpretations at superhuman speeds. Furthermore, his ability encompassed the language of machines: Doug could mentally interface with computer systems, understanding programming languages and even giving voice commands in code to manipulate hardware. He also demonstrated an uncanny 'reading' of physical structures, sensing weaknesses in architecture or design as if parsing their structural language. This omnilingual talent made him not just a translator, but a unique strategist and negotiator, able to bridge gaps between species, technologies, and cultures with unparalleled instinct. (New Mutants v1 #13)
He can read the information flow from technological components emitting such. (All-New X-Factor v1 #6)
He also had the ability to 'read' architectural structure and integrity to ascertain a building's weaknesses. (X-Necrosha v1 #1)
Warlock was able to take the qualities of a weapon such as a sword that could be wielded by Ramsey. (New Mutants v4 #13)
As Revelation, Ramsey had gone through a process by Apocalypse where he was submerged in a chemical bath that broke down his body into a skeleton then pieced it together according to a new design. This saw him gaining a much more muscular and powerful form that allowed him to retain his former human appearance. In addition, his Mutant power gained a similar upgrade where his linguistic ability now encompassed input and output. It was described akin as hacking into the mind of others through the medium of language similar how one used code to hack into a computer. Through words, he could take over a persons body causing them to obey his commands against their will. An example could be seen by having order a man to point his gun towards his own head. (X-Men v7 #19)
