Division 3 (Marvel)

Division 3 is an agency that features in Legion.

History

Division 3 was an agency created by the United States government following an incident known as the Lazarus Affair. This resulted in the formation of a response group designed to deal with the threat posed by Mutants. Thus, a number of Division's were created with Division 3 being responsible of finding and preventing the dangers caused by Mutants. It operated alongside the Division's and other government agencies around the world to complete this goal.

Division 3 has dealt with incidents such as Redhook and the Clockworks Psychiatric Hospital. They employ both humans and mutants as well as androids. For many years Division 3's greatest nemesis was Summerland, a group of renegade mutants led by Melanie Bird. Summerland often found mutants and would use them to fight against Division 3 in a war. However when Division 3 and Summerland realized that there were greater foes than each other the two organizations merged. The foe that was the catalyst for this merging was Amahl Farouk alias the Shadow King. Many of the mutants came to work for Division 3 as they sought to defeat their real enemy as well as other mutant threats.

Their first activities included the interrogation and psychological manipulation of David Haller, who had been institutionalized and whose immense powers drew their attention. Division 3 operatives monitored David, orchestrated his extraction from Clockworks Psychiatric Hospital, and subjected him to invasive questioning. They utilized military-grade restraints, surveillance, and advanced machinery to attempt to dissect the nature of his abilities. Their actions demonstrated their focus on controlling, weaponizing, or eliminating mutant threats rather than understanding them. Division 3 escalated their activities by launching a direct pursuit of David after he was rescued from their custody by mutants allied with Summerland. Agents and soldiers under their command deployed helicopters, heavy weaponry, and tactical units in an effort to recapture him. This episode depicted Division 3 as highly organized, treating mutants as hostile targets and deploying overwhelming force. The pursuit demonstrated both the breadth of their resources and their ruthless methods, showing them willing to use lethal action to suppress perceived threats.

Overview

In appearance, Division 3 was an agency that had a mandate to respond to Mutant threats where it was responsible for investigations, research and tactical measures. It operated as the tip of the spear and contrasted with Division 1 that was global command and communications whilst Division 2 was pure science, genetics and technology.

There are four main branches of Division 3. Investigations, which finds new mutant threats out in the field. Research, which, using science and technology, discover ways to neutralize mutant threats. Strategy, who determine who to deal with threats as well as the general population. And Tactical, which goes out into the field as Division 3's own private military force.

One item used by the agency were the Vermillions that were human-like androids used by Division 3. They resembled humans with bowl cuts, prominent mustaches, and feminine bodies who speak in digitally-altered voice pitches. The Vermillions were connected to Admiral Fukyama and enable him to interact with the world, describing themselves as 'the machine that bleeds'.

• Admiral Fukyama : as a young boy, Fukyama agreed to a procedure that placed a machine deep inside his cerebral cortex. Though the process was so painful that he screamed for days, it gave him telepathic abilities. With a basket over his head to conceal his disfigurement, Admiral Fukyama eventually became the head of Division 3, communicating only through the android Vermillions and describing themselves as 'the machine that bleeds'.
