Biography

Origin

Doctor Stasis in X-Men v6 #5.

Nathaniel Essex

After Essex was altered by Apocalypse, he gained superhuman abilities where he turned against his 'master'. In 1895, Essex returned to Milbury House to continue his experiments, reassuming his ordinary and frail human persona. He had lost control of his condition as Sinister and developed a split personality of a more feral 'Mister Sinister'. Following an outing into the streets of London he was found at the scene naked and battered but with no memory of the attack. The mutant shapeshifter Raven Darkhölme, under the disguise of Sherlock Holmes, and her partner, the clairvoyant Irene Adler, approached him to investigate the incidents. Darkhölme lured him by masquerading as a potential victim, and he escaped across the rooftops to his home. Darkhölme and Adler followed him to witness him turn back into his frail sickly form. Essex revealed to them that his condition was deteriorating, but he was determined to survive to see not only the 20th but also the 21st century, when machines were expected to become the dominant beings on the planet. He envisioned four possible routes that could be explored as a solution to the ascension of the artificial intelligence: the potential of mankind itself, the wonders of space beyond the stars, the mystical knowledge beyond the understanding of machine mind, and the Essex-men themselves. Darkhölme and Adler had him arrested and sent away to Bedlam where overnight he was murdered. Adler returned to his home and discovered four broken cloning tanks, each with a playing card suit. A voice recording by Essex declared that going the way of survival of the fittest would allow him to become immortal. (Immortal X-Men v1 #8) Essex had created four separate clones marked with different playing card suits, none of whom had knowledge of the others and each of whom believed themselves the original Essex, with no knowledge of his death in Bedlam. The clone of diamonds continued to operate as Mister Sinister, further pursuing his knowledge of mutant genetics. The clone of clubs resurfaced over a century later in New York City, operating as Doctor Stasis. (X-Men v6 #12)

Throwing himself into the world of science, Stasis was present during many breakthroughs in the creation of superhumans through science. He first witnessed the creation of Captain America and it was during this time he learned he was a clone when he witnessed Mister Sinister working for the U.S. government. (X-Men: Before The Fall - Sinister Four v1 #1) Stasis also aided Bella Pagan in the early work with creating the Children of the Vault and left himself a back door in them for future use. (Rise of the Powers of X v1 #1) He was on hand for the genesis of the Hulk and witnessed him saving Rick Jones in the unforgiving desert landscape. Undeterred by the unusual twists of fate, Doctor Stasis remained a constant presence in the unfolding tapestry of superhuman origins. His watchful eyes were there when Spider-Man, in a moment destined for history, was bitten by the radioactive spider, forever altering the course of the web-slinger's destiny. (X-Men: Before The Fall - Sinister Four v1 #1)

He set up a base deep underneath New Jersey, where he conducted his experiments. (X-Men v6 #12) In this time, he began creating highly intelligent animal chimeras as servants, whom he would repeatedly kill for their failures before bringing them back to life. (X-Men v6 #11) Stasis would spend each evening eating dinner in the company of clones of his late wife Rebecca and son Adam, killing them once the dinner was over or when they failed to meet his expectations. (X-Men v6 #23) By this point, he came to be the mysterious chairman of the Oblivion Institute. (X-Men v6 #2) He also came to be aware of a fellow Essex clone named Orbis Stellaris where the two began to start to work together. (X-Men: Before The Fall - Sinister Four v1 #1) At some point, he joined the ranks of the Orchis organization where he served as the director of Sixth Petal governing Human/Resources. (X-Men v6 #9)

House of X

The emergence of Krakoa was deemed by Doctor Stasis to be a dangerous tumor on the world where it would bring about the death of humanity. Thus, he was resolved to prevent his by cutting it out. (X-Men v6 #1) He came to join the ranks of Orchis that had arise to oppose the collective threat posed by Mutants. During this time, the organizations Mother Mold facility was attacked by the X-Men who critically damaged the site. A number of the Mutants were killed where their bodies were taken and sent over to Doctor Stasis. However, those Mutants killed seemingly re-emerged back on Krakoa with no sign that they had been killed. Thus, Doctor Stasis studied the Mutant remains in order to find how the Mutants had achieved this feat of resurrection. (X-Men v6 #2) To combat the threat of Krakoa, Doctor Stasis believed he needed to learn the secret of Mutants resurrecting their own from death. (X-Men v6 #1) Doctor Stasis had developed a hypothesis that he looked to test the nature behind the resurrection process of the Krakoans. (X-Men v6 #2)
