Biography
Origin
After Essex was altered by Apocalypse, he gained superhuman abilities where he turned against his 'master'. In 1895, Essex returned to Milbury House to continue his experiments, reassuming his ordinary and frail human persona. He had lost control of his condition as Sinister and developed a split personality of a more feral 'Mister Sinister'. Following an outing into the streets of London he was found at the scene naked and battered but with no memory of the attack. The mutant shapeshifter Raven Darkhölme, under the disguise of Sherlock Holmes, and her partner, the clairvoyant Irene Adler, approached him to investigate the incidents. Darkhölme lured him by masquerading as a potential victim, and he escaped across the rooftops to his home. Darkhölme and Adler followed him to witness him turn back into his frail sickly form. Essex revealed to them that his condition was deteriorating, but he was determined to survive to see not only the 20th but also the 21st century, when machines were expected to become the dominant beings on the planet. He envisioned four possible routes that could be explored as a solution to the ascension of the artificial intelligence: the potential of mankind itself, the wonders of space beyond the stars, the mystical knowledge beyond the understanding of machine mind, and the Essex-men themselves. Darkhölme and Adler had him arrested and sent away to Bedlam where overnight he was murdered. Adler returned to his home and discovered four broken cloning tanks, each with a playing card suit. A voice recording by Essex declared that going the way of survival of the fittest would allow him to become immortal. (Immortal X-Men v1 #8)
At some point, he came to take over the World Farm and the Progenitors, whom he was able to easily reprogram to serve his goals. (X-Men: Red v2 #8)
Orbis Stellaris was an enigmatic galactic power player and a high-ranking representative who served on the pan-tribal Galactic Council on behalf of the Galactic Rim Collective. When the mutant nation of Krakoa unexpectedly claimed and terraformed Mars into Planet Arakko, Orbis traveled to the S.W.O.R.D. space station known as the Peak to attend an emergency diplomatic assembly regarding the solar system's new status. While other alien empires loudly protested the mutant expansion, Orbis quietly observed the situation with calculating interest. Recognizing the immense value of the newly engineered cosmic metal known as Mysterium, he accepted a massive bribe of the material from Commander Abigail Brand. In exchange for this wealth, Orbis officially voted to recognize Arakko as the capital of the Sol system, leveraging his immense political influence to solidify a historic alliance with Earth's mutant space program. (X-Men: Red v2 #6) He came to serve as a diplomat for the Galactic Rim Collective. (S.W.O.R.D. v2 #6) Seeking a partner in the Sol system, Orbis Stellaris entered into a working relationship with Abigail Brand, who had her own secret plan to reshape galactic politics. Stellaris was willing to work with her for credits upfront and favors down the line. (X-Men: Red v2 #8)
At some point, he became aware of Doctor Stasis, and the two started working together. (X-Men: Before The Fall - Sinister Four v1 #1)
House of X
On Brand's suggestion, Stellaris had some of his Progenitors retrieve Vulcan from the Fault. (X-Men: Red v2 #8) At the World Farm, three Progenitors had vivisected Vulcan's body and mind to study him and see if he would be useful. While opening him up, they discovered a great fire within him, but deemed his body and mind to be too twisted and broken to fix, yet still useful to them. They tinkered with his mind, separating all that was good within him from his truly broken and twisted self. They sent him back to his universe with his memories of this erased, seemingly as a changed man with a whole new and different personality and outlook on life, while trapping his true persona within his mind, only to be unleashed through great emotional turmoil or when they deemed fit in accordance with their plans. (X-Men v5 #10) After the Mutants of Krakoa and Arakko terraformed Mars, Orbis Stellaris attended a meeting of Galactic representatives on the Peak hosted by Abigail Brand to discuss the subject. He expressed interest in both the speed achieved by this method of terraforming and the offer of Mysterium, electing to accept the diplomatic terms offered by mutants on behalf of the Galactic Rim Collective. (S.W.O.R.D. v2 #6)
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Orbis Stellaris was a completely non-humanoid, technological entity whose entire visible form consisted of a large, floating mechanical sphere. The outer hull of his spherical body featured a smooth, metallic surface adorned with intricate circuitry pathways and high-tech paneling that emitted a soft, internal energy glow. He possessed no traditional organic limbs, eyes, or facial features, relying instead on his floating chassis to interact with his surroundings. The central front of his mechanical body featured a prominent, illuminated display area shaped like a geometric, stylized eye-like crest that flared when he communicated. He did not wear clothing or standard cosmic armor, moving through diplomatic chambers as a weightless, self-contained machine that completely masked any biological presence. (S.W.O.R.D. v2 #6)
Destined to explore the stars, Essex left the planet before space travel was even an idea entertained by human fiction. (X-Men: Red v2 #10)
Powers and abilities
Unlike other versions of Essex, who prolonged their lives through repeated cloning, he opted to become an organic/mechanical fusion construct, sealing himself in a floating orb that housed life support systems for his frail body. (X-Men: Red v2 #10)
He used his intellect to become a powerful figure on a galactic scale, his earthly origins unknown to most people he dealt with. (S.W.O.R.D. v2 #11)
As head of Stellaris, he used his knowledge of xenogenetics, cloning, and technology to create replicable squads of cloned cyborg warriors with enhanced powers that could be sold off to anyone willing to pay. (S.W.O.R.D. v2 #9) Squads could be cloned and outfitted indefinitely, allowing buyers options from small terrorist squads to planetary invasion armies. (S.W.O.R.D. v2 #10)
Orbis Stellaris possessed a high level of political influence and unique technological traits suited for intergalactic diplomacy and leadership. He exhibited the absolute authority to negotiate and cast deciding votes on behalf of the entire Galactic Rim Collective, making him a major player in universal law. His mechanical form was equipped with advanced, silent anti-gravity repulsors that allowed him to levitate and glide smoothly through the air without any physical propulsion. He was highly proficient in commerce and resource evaluation, instantly recognizing the reality-warping properties and economic value of newly discovered cosmic elements. Additionally, his station granted him command over a massive industrial trade network capable of manufacturing and deploying custom mercenary forces across the stars. (S.W.O.R.D. v2 #6)
