Biography

Natsu Dragneel and his companions in Fairy Tail v1 #1.

Natsu Dragneel (Japanese: ナツ・ドラグニル, Hepburn: Natsu Doraguniru) was a male human who was born in the Earthlands around 400 years ago where he had an older brother named Zeref Dragneel. During this time, a war erupted among the Dragons that began to prey on humanity. The conflict saw his own death and that of his parents with Zeref being the only survivor. In the aftermath, Zeref sought to revive his family and studied magic where he came to be a magical prodigy. Initially, he researched a means of resurrection using the R-System but this ultimately saw him being subjected to the curse of Anhkseram that turned him immortal and also killed those around him during times when he felt feelings of love. In the centuries that followed, he became filled with despair over the nature of the curse of contradiction that plagued him and he sought a means to die. Zeref ultimately created the race of demons known as the Etherious in the hope that one of their number could kill him. The various types of demons were used as test subjects to create the strongest demon with this being Etherious Natsu Dragneel (エーテリアス・ナツ・ドラグニル Ēteriasu Natsu Doraguniru). E.N.D. was thus his brother Natsu reborn as a half-demon and initially for a time he cared for his younger brother. However, Natsu proved to be wild and uncontrollable with Zeref deciding to turn to the dragon Igneel to raise him.

Igneel was responsible for teaching Natsu how to talk, write, and perform his own signature form of Lost Magic: Fire Dragon Slayer Magic. Ultimately, Igneel similar to the other Dragons decided to seal his damaged soul inside Natsu's body and leap four hundred years into the future. This was to recover his strength with the future's high Ethernano concentrations and kill Acnologia. Natsu came to believe that he had been abandoned by Igneel and was oblivious to the fact that he now resided in the future. The departure of E.N.D. from the past also gave rise to many legends about the strongest Demon of Zeref's creation. After waking up, Natsu left on a quest to find Igneel and was eventually found by the Guild Master of Fairy Tail: Makarov Dreyar. Natsu ended up joining Fairy Tail, in which he formed a close, sibling-like rivalry with Gray Fullbuster and Erza Scarlet. In this time, he came to develop a close friendship with Lisanna Strauss and Elfman Strauss not long after they arrived to the guild. One day, Natsu found an egg in the forest east of Magnolia. Thinking it to be a Dragon Egg, Natsu took it to the guild and asked Makarov to make it hatch, but Makarov and Erza told him that he was the only one that could make the egg hatch; through love and care. Lisanna offered to help Natsu care for the egg until it hatched, to which Natsu happily accepted. The two built a shabby straw house in the park to keep the egg warm, becoming very close in the process. The next morning, Natsu discovered that the egg was missing, and began to blame several of his guildmates. After arguing with almost everyone in the Guild and nearly starting a fight with Mirajane, Elfman appeared, carrying the egg, explaining that he only wanted to help, but was too embarrassed to ask. Suddenly, the egg hatched and a blue cat with wings came out. Lisanna remarked upon the sudden change in the guild's atmosphere after the cat's birth, prompting Natsu to name the cat Happy. A few years passed and Lisanna partook upon an S-Class job with her siblings, in which she was supposed to hunt a creature called the Beast. Natsu wished to go with her, but Elfman opposed, as he felt he should be the one to take care of his family. Lisanna was supposedly been accidentally killed by Elfman during his attempt at taking over the monster. Though Natsu forgave him, he was greatly saddened by the event.

After Igneel's disappearance seven years before the series' present, Natsu joined Fairy Tail and decided to find the dragon.

Natsu arrived in a town after receiving tip that a "Salamander" has been spotted. The "Salamander" turned out to be an impostor that has been charming women. Natsu ended up saving all the women, including a traveling mage named Lucy Heartfilia, from the impostor's influence. After finding out that Lucy wants to join Natsu's guild, Fairy Tail, Natsu invites her to join, in which she accepts.

After Lucy accommodates herself to her new living arrangements, she finds Natsu and Happy to have shamelessly entered her apartment, uninvited. To no avail, she tries to get them to leave, and instead opts to offer her two companions a cup of tea and teach them the inner workings of Celestial Spirit Magic. Lucy summons Plue, The Canis Minor, and forms a contract with him. Plue then, with Natsu interpreting, suggests that he, Lucy, and Happy form a team, to which they all agree, and do; their first mission: infiltrate a mansion and steal a book. When the team arrives in Shirotsume Town, they make their way to their client's, in this case, Kaby Melon's house, where he informs them of the mission details, and that the award amount for completing said job had greatly increased. Impassioned, Lucy disguises herself as a maid, hoping to infiltrate the mansion, however, she is rejected by mansion's owner, Everlue, for being too "ugly," and, as such, Natsu, Lucy, and Happy instead resolve to sneak into the mansion and take the book by force. The trio moves quietly about Everlue's mansion, until they are found by the miser's maids, whom Natsu easily defeats. Shortly thereafter, Team Natsu finds themselves in the library, and Natsu, rather quickly, finds the book they are looking for: DAYBREAK. As Natsu is about to burn the book, thereby completing their job, Lucy sees that the book was written by Kemu Zaleon, her favorite author, and tells Natsu that he could not destroy it. Just then, Everlue himself surfaces from below the ground, having taken no action solely to see what their objectives were, and calls upon the Vanish Brothers to eliminate them. Lucy, however, declares that the book is harboring a secret, and asks Natsu to buy her some time. Everlue goes after her, interested about the secret, and Natsu tells Happy to follow them while he dealt with the brothers. After defeating the Vanish Brothers, Natsu grabs onto head maid when she begins to move. Consequently, when Everlue summons his head maid, who is actually the Celestial Spirit Virgo, Natsu is brought to Everlue's location. Lucy shouts for him to deal with Virgo while she defeats Everlue. He complies, delivering her a powerful blow. After defeating Everlue, Natsu begrudgingly returns the book to Kaby, where they find out that Kemu Zaleon, who was actually Kaby's father, Zekua Melon, cast a spell on the book, and that it's real meaning lay hidden within. The group decides to not take any payment for the job, much to Lucy's dismay, since they didn't destroy the book, as their job had stated for them to do.

Upon the technical failure of their mission, Team Natsu returns to the guild, where Natsu once again gets into a fight with Gray. Loke then rushes into the guild in a panic and warns the two that Erza has finished her job as well, and that she is on her way back to the guild. Almost immediately, Natsu and Gray cease their bickering and begin acting like best friends. Upon her arrival, Erza, much to their horror, asks Natsu and Gray to accompany her on a mission. When they arrive at the train station, Natsu compromises with Erza, saying that he will only go if she agrees to fight with him when they return, to which Erza agrees. On the train, Natsu succumbs to his motion sickness and Erza, in an attempt to make him feel better, knocks him out. The other members start to discuss the mission, but, in the process, forget to wake up Natsu, and leave him behind on the train. Kageyama, a member of the Dark Guild Eisenwald, the guild they were talking about earlier, tries to start a conversation with Natsu. However, Kageyama attacks Natsu and the two begin to fight, with Natsu quickly getting the upper hand when the train stops. During their fight, Natsu notices the Lullaby flute, and before the train starts to move again, jumps out of the train's window and into a Magic four-wheel vehicle driven by Erza. The team then, via vehicle, returns to the train station, causing Natsu to become sick along the way, thereby warranting Lucy to carry him. Despite being denied entry onto the platform, the team enters nonetheless, and are confronted by the members of Eisenwald. Upon hearing Kageyama's voice, Natsu snaps out of his stupor and protects Lucy from one of Kageyama's attacks. Erza then orders him and Gray to go after Erigor, and the two agree to split up to find him. To start, Natsu starts searching for Erigor by breaking down walls, even though the doors happen to be situated right next to him. Kageyama then sneaks up behind Natsu, attacking him. After the two Mages exchange blows, Natsu, proving to be the stronger of the two, quickly overwhelms Kageyama and questions him on the whereabouts of Erigor. Just as Erza arrives to question him on how to dispel the barrier of wind around the station, to everyone's surprise, Kageyama is suddenly stabbed in the back by one of his allies and Natsu, in a rage, attacks the assassin, trying to avenge Kageyama. With the aid of the Celestial Spirit Virgo, Team Natsu was able to travel underneath the wind wall, via tunnel. With the aid of Happy's Max Speed, Natsu quickly begins to chase after Erigor. After Natsu finds Erigor, the two begin their brawl, with Natsu gaining the upper hand, forcing Erigor to use his Storm Mail to cope with the Fire Dragon Slayer's power. With Natsu's flames being put out, Natsu's flame-enhanced punches are reduced to nothing more than regular punches, frustrating him. With this, Natsu's flames burn hotter, courtesy of Natsu's own "Flame of Emotion". Happy, noticing the effects of the super-heated fire on Erigor's Storm Mail, appeals to Natsu's rivalry with Gray. With his flames burning hotter than ever, courtesy to his rage, Natsu defeats Erigor. When the others arrive, Kageyama steals the Lullaby flute and goes to the Guild Masters' meeting. The team quickly follows and are stopped from saving Makarov by the other Guild Masters, while Makarov convinces Kageyama to give up. Since Kageyama refused to play the flute and finish off Makarov, the flute morphs into its true form, which is that of a gigantic Demon. Seeing this, Natsu teams up with Gray and Erza to take it down, which, unfortunately, also results in the destruction of the Guild Masters' meeting house. When they see this, the Guild Masters' turn around to find Fairy Tail running away, save for Natsu, who offers to help the Guild Masters by chasing after his teammates, completely unaware that he is being chased as well.

They started to become close friends, along with Erza Scarlet and Gray Fullbuster. Later on, Natsu, Lucy, Erza, and Gray went on a mission and stopped the dark guild, Eisenwald, from using the powerful Lullaby flute to eliminate all of the guild masters.

In another mission, Natsu and his friends sneaked off to the cursed Galuna Island. The Fairy Tail team eventually stopped Lyon Vastia, from reviving the demon, Deliora. Upon returning from the Galuna Island mission, Natsu finds his guild and friends attacked by another guild. Angered by these attacks, Natsu furiously leads the charge to the perpetrator, who turns out to be Phantom Lord. Natsu gets into a fight with the Iron Dragon Slayer, Gajeel Redfox, but the battle ended abruptly after Fairy Tail's master, Makarov Dreyar, is seemingly defeated by Phantom Lord's master, Jose Porla. When Jose turned his headquarters into a weapon, Natsu and his friends attacked the enemy's headquarters and defeated Phantom Lord's strongest mages, including Gajeel.

After receiving tickets to a resort, Erza and Happy was kidnapped while Natsu and his friends went to a casino. Natsu tracked them down and ended up at the abandoned Tower of Heaven. Natsu saved Happy by defeating Millianna and Wally Buchanan. However, Natsu lost to Fukuro when Natsu became unconscious due to motion sickness. He soon wakes up and heads to the top of the tower where Jellal Fernandez is located. Luckily, Natsu arrived just in time to save Erza from being absorbed into a magical Lacrima. At first, Jellal has the upper hand in the battle, but Natsu defeated him with the power of Dragon Force after consuming some of the magical Lacrima.

During the Harvest Festival, Laxus Dreyar and his bodyguards forced Fairy Tail members to battle each other. When Natsu wanted to leave the guild to enter the fray, he was surprisingly stopped by a magical barrier. After the barrier was released by Levy McGarden, Natsu quickly found Laxus. Natsu and his new ally, Gajeel, worked together and stopped Laxus' terror on Fairy Tail. A few weeks after the Harvest Festival, Natsu and his friends were chosen to represent Fairy Tail for the legal guild alliance to defeat the dark guild, Oración Seis. Much to Natsu's surprise, Oración Seis knew about the alliance and attacked first. Natsu defeats one of the Oración Seis member, Cobra, while the rest of the alliance takes down four other dark mages. When Fairy Tail confronts the master of the Oración Seis, Brain, it is revealed that Brain has another personality called Zero. Zero nearly destroys all of the alliance members, but with the help of Jellal, Natsu enters Dragon Force once again and knocks out Zero.

Awhile later, Natsu reunites with Gildarts Clive, but their reunion ended abruptly after Fairy Tail was absorbed into the parallel world, Edolas. In Edolas, Natsu happily finds out that Lisanna Strauss was still alive and also meets his parallel counterpart, Natsu the Fireball. Once again, Natsu and his friends saved Edolas' kingdom by besting the mad king, Faust, and his knights. In the end, Natsu pretends to be a villain, so Mystogan, who turns out to be the king's son, can become the savior of the kingdom. After the guild has been restored from the Edolas incident, Makarov announced that a S-Class Mage Promotion Trial will be held soon with Natsu as one of the participants. Natsu, with Happy as his partner, completed the first trial, despite losing to Gildarts. The second trial was however, interrupted when Grimoire Heart, invaded Tenrou Island. Natsu defended the island by winning battles against Zancrow and Grimoire Heart's master, Hades, with the help of Laxus' lightning magic. However, just as Fairy Tail begin to recover from the previous battle, Acnologia appears and prepares to annihilate all of the mages. With no other choice, all of the Fairy Tail members join hands in hope of a miracle.

Seven years later, Natsu and the rest of the Fairy Tail members were found when Blue Pegasus and the remaining Fairy Tail mages searched for them. With the assistance of Jellal and Ultear Milkovich's magic, Natsu and his allies became strong enough to enter the Grand Magic Games. In one of the rounds, Natsu came in third-to-last place in a race that requires the participants to be on mobile vehicles, much to Natsu's dismay. In another round, Natsu and Gajeel won their two-on-two battle against Sabertooth's Sting Eucliffe and Rogue Cheney, despite Natsu fighting most of the battle by himself. Because of his victory, Fairy Tail obtained first place for the first time in the tournament.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Natsu was an average height teenager with a muscular build with a spiky salmon pink-colored hair and black eyes. His Fairy Tail guild mark was crimson and located near his right shoulder. It was also known that Natsu had several scars on his neck and abdomen from fights he faced across his life. His regular style consists of a sleeveless dark-colored waistcoat that exposes his bare chest, light-colored knee-length trousers, a black wristband, and black sandals. In addition, he always wore a scale patterned scarf that was given to him by his adoptive father, Igneel. In time, he came to be known by the epithet of Salamander (サラマンダー Saramandā) with his reputation preceding him.

Natsu was shown to be usually very laid-back and carefree person with this especially being the case around his friends.

He also had a strong sense of justice and does whatever was morally good.

Despite his good nature, he could be very oblivious and reckless. He often destroyed properties belonging to others while on missions or gets into fights with other members of Fairy Tail.

Even though Natsu considered Fairy Tail his family, he was always challenging other members, such as Gray Fullbuster and Erza Scarlet into fights because he wants to prove his strength and become the strongest mage in his guild. However, he was actually very loyal and protective of his friends. When Natsu or his friends are faced with danger or disrespect, Natsu can become very angry and prefer to solve his problems with brute force and violence rather than communication.

Nevertheless, Natsu will often show compassion or forgive his enemies, such as when Cobra was betrayed by Brain. Throughout the story, Natsu will also become close allies with former enemies, such as Gajeel Redfox or Jellal Fernandez. Natsu also dislike transportation because he suffers from motion sickness due to having Dragon Slayer magic. He will become sick on every form of transportation, such as a train or a ship. (With the exception Wendy's sickness spell).

Powers and abilities

As a Nihongo Dragon Slayer (ドラゴンスレイヤー Doragon Sureiyā), Natsu was a spellcaster who wielded Fire Dragon Slayer Magic (炎の滅竜魔法 Honō no Metsuryū Mahō). This was a ancient form of lost magic that granted him the physical properties of a dragon. The magic provided him a range of abilities linked to a fire dragon that allowed him to breathe fire, emit flames from any part of his body to attack, become physically immune to fire, and ingest any flame for nourishment. This type of magic was learnt from a fire dragon which in Natsu's case was from his adoptive father Igneel.

When he consumes magical substances that contain a large amount of magical energy, such as Etherion or the Flame of Rebuke, Natsu is able to achieve a more powerful form of Dragon Slayer magic called Nihongo Dragon Force (ドラゴンフォース Doragon Fōsu), which turns his skin around his eyes and on his forearms scaly, and increases both his physical and magical power. Dragon Force is known to be comparable to that of a real Dragon and is often considered to be the strongest state a Dragon Slayer can attain. With Dragon Force, Natsu can temporarily eat other forms of magic and combine that with his own; however, Natsu becomes sick for several days after his transformation wears off. When Natsu absorbed Laxus Dreyar's lightning magic during the battle against Hades, Natsu gained the ability of Mōdo Raienryū. The lightning magic fused with Natsu's flames to create a stronger version of Dragon Slayer magic, so Natsu can temporarily use Fire Dragon Slayer magic enhanced with lightning attributes. This magic is shown to be very powerful and destructive. Similar to Dragon Force, this magic drains all of the user's magic and leaves the user very exhausted.

Among the techniques known to him included:

  • Fire Dragon's Roar (火竜の咆哮 Karyū no Hōkō) :
  • Fire Dragon's Claw (火竜の鉤爪 Karyū no Kagizume) :
  • Fire Dragon's Iron Fist (火竜の鉄拳 Karyū no Tekken) :
  • Fire Dragon's Wing Attack (火竜の翼撃 Karyū no Yokugeki) :

After Igneel's death, he came to absorb the last of the great dragon that was contained within his body. Natsu then spent 10 months of dedicated training in being able to access and wield this power. Though potent magic, it was only for a limited use and could be expended thus causing the last of the great Igneel's power to disappear from the world. Natsu kept the magic contained in his arm through draconian tattoos that appeared on it and served as a physical manifestation of the magic power. According to Natsu, it was the manifestation of Igneel's undying will and once expended its power could never be utilised again.

Similar to other Dragon Slayers, it was noted that he suffered from motion sickness.
