Eugene Vlachos was, during World War II, the latest descendant of the Vlachos family who had owned Navarone for numerous generations. When the Germans and Italians invaded Greece and took over Navarone, Vlachos was displaced and fled the island to take up residence in the Middle East, where he opened a hotel. His faithful servant and friend Louki remained on Navarone as part of the resistance against the Axis occupation. He was visited by Keith Mallory to gain some insight into both the island and the resistance movement there. He tried to dissuade Mallory fro enlisting the assistance of the Greeks on Navarone, for fear of brutal German reprisals.
