History

The F-302 was a type of starship that was created by the Tau'ri of Earth. (SG1: Fallen) They came as a result of humanity's encounter with extraterrestrial life following the discovery of the Stargate. It resulted in an incursion on Earth through the gateway by the Goa'uld lord Apophis. In an attempt to learn of their foe, the Tau'ri travelled to Chulak leading to conflict with the Goa'uld empires warrior caste that were the Jaffa. This in turn saw the engagement against Goa'uld Death Gliders and the advanced technology of their enemy. Since that time, Stargate Command was established with the express purpose of finding allies and discovery technology to protect the Earth against this foe. (SG1: Children of the Gods) The planet later faced threat from Apophis had travelled through conventional means via Ha'tak in an attempt to conquer Earth but was defeated by the efforts of SG-1. (Episode: The Serpent's Lair) Following the battle, Earth came to acquire a pair of Death Gliders alongside other alien technology that was being studied at Area 51 research facility in Nevada, where human scientists and engineers started reverse-engineering the technology. The initial goal was to understand Goa'uld propulsion, weapon systems, and structural design to create Earth's own space-capable fighter. At this stage, the project was merely in its infancy, focused on analysis and experimentation with captured alien craft. (SG1: Touchstone)

The first prototype human-Goa'uld hybrid fighter named the X-301 later came to be unveiled. This craft was essentially two captured Death Gliders integrated with human systems, including a cockpit, life support, and weapons. Colonel Jack O'Neill and Teal'c conducted a test flight, but the mission went disastrously wrong when an undetectable, pre-programmed Apophis anti-theft and recall device activated, overriding human controls and sending the ship hurtling into deep space toward Apophis's original homeworld. The SGC and the Tok'ra worked against the clock to rescue the pair, who were running out of oxygen. This near-fatal incident proved the danger of relying on unmodified Goa'uld technology and emphasized the need for a fully human-designed and built spacecraft. (SG1: Tangent) Research continued in making a human made starfighter leading to the development of the next prototype that was the X-302. This new craft was a ground-up human design, though it kept a similar aesthetic to the Goa'uld gliders and incorporated a naquadria-powered hyperspace window generator, using a volatile material acquired from the planet Kelowna. A prototype of the X-302 was completed just as Anubis initiated a plan to destroy Earth by overloading the SGC Stargate. O'Neill and Major Samantha Carter piloted the X-302, intending to use its experimental hyperdrive to contact the Asgard for help. The naquadria proved too unstable for sustained interstellar travel, causing the first hyperspace attempt to abort, but O'Neill eventually used the short-range hyperspace window capability to transport the Stargate into space, where it exploded safely away from Earth. The X-302's performance in this crisis, despite the hyperdrive issues, demonstrated its combat effectiveness and potential, leading to its mass production as the F-302 fighter-interceptor, the backbone of Earth's first space fleet. (SG1: Redemption)

Overview

In appearance, the F-302 was a human-built, space-capable fighter that blended the aesthetic of a Goa'uld Death Glider with modern Earth aircraft design, notably the faceted, angular look of an F-117 stealth fighter. It had a sleek, grey fuselage and a more robust, less elegant profile compared to the Goa'uld ships it was based on, reflecting its human engineering origins. The craft was distinguished by its unique, angular wing structure that swept back from the main body, terminating in vertical stabilizers that gave it a more conventional aviation look than the alien gliders. It featured a two-seat cockpit with a stepped canopy, allowing both the pilot and co-pilot to have a clear view and be visible on screen simultaneously. The X-302 was equipped with a combination of four engine systems: two air-breathing jet engines for atmospheric flight, two modified aerospike boosters for high altitude, and a single rocket booster integrated into the rear for use in space, a multi-engine design that differed significantly from the single-engine Goa'uld gliders. For its critical mission to save Earth, all non-essential equipment, including its weapons and standard landing gear, had been stripped out, leaving it with a relatively plain, functional appearance that was focused solely on its objective. This utilitarian look, complete with 'explosive bolt' and 'ejection seat' warnings painted on its hull, emphasized its status as an experimental military prototype rather than a sophisticated alien vessel. (SG1: Redemption)

Much like its counterpart the Death Glider, the F-302 was an unshielded, two-seat multi-role craft. As Earth's technology was still less advanced than that of the Goa'uld, the F-302 was slower and less maneuverable than a glider, though it had three different sets of sublight engines. However, one F-302 was still able to evade and defeat several squadrons of gliders. It was also larger than a Glider with some degree of durability as there was an instance of it taking energy cannon hits and still being able to fly and fight. Some development work on the F-302 was shifted to the private sector such as the multi engine control systems, which were designed by Colson Aviation. (SG1: Convenant)

The initial X-302 prototype had possessed a fourth engine and a hyperdrive, which was the smallest of its kind due to its use of naqahdriah instead of the more-stable but less-powerful naqahdah. Unfortunately, the 302's hyperdrive engine currently does not work as intended, due to instability caused by the naqahdriah. The hyperdrive was only capable of short range tactical jumps. (SG1: Fallen) Despite that, production models were known to still be equipped with hyperdrives. Furthermore, its inertial damper was only ninety percent effective when pulling negative G's. (SG1: Fragile Balance) In addition, the F-302's have a magnetic clamping landing gear system which allows them to clamp onto the hulls of ships. (SG1: No Man's Land)

In terms of armaments, the F-302 was originally armed solely with a payload of modified air-to-air missiles. These modified AIM-120 AMRAAMs had a warhead enhanced with naqahdah and a shield modulator, which in theory allowed the missile to bypass shields. (SG1: Ethon)
