Biography

Anubis was a Goa'uld parasite who over a thousand years ago came to amass power to the point that he stood amongst the ruling System Lords of the Milky Way galaxy. At some point, he was noted to had committed unspeakable acts even amongst his own people leading to his banishment from their ranks. (SG1: Last Stand, Part 2)

It was believed that he had discovered old Ancient research on Ascension. Through this knowledge, he began to study the process in order to prepare himself for it where he travelled to Kheb. He was responsible for tricking Oma Desala into helping him achieve Ascension even though this was against the rules by their kind. By the time she realized her mistake, it was too late to undo the process forcing the Others to step in. They placed him back into a state between corporeal and Ascension where they denied him access to the full extent of his powers. However, they allowed him to be free to conduct any action that he would as a Goa'uld. This was seen as a punishment being made against Oma Desala as the Others disproved of her interference in the lower planes. Though denied the power of an Ascended, Anubis was able to access the knowledge of the Ancients which he used to enact his plans. (SG1: Threads) It was note that Anubis had been missing for the last thousand years where it was believed he had been killed. (SG1: Last Stand, Part 2)

Originally a regular member of the System Lords, Anubis was exiled over a millennium ago from the System Lords collective, apparently for "crimes unspeakable, even to the Goa'uld". Yu and the other System Lords of the time sent assassins after him, and assumed him to be dead. [5] However, Anubis used Ancient information on ascension he had discovered earlier to trick Oma Desala into helping him to ascend.

Eventually, Anubis returned in the wake of the destruction of Apophis and Cronus by SG-1, and began to dominate the galaxy using advanced technology, based on the Ancient knowledge gained through his ascension. This technology was superior to that of all the other Goa'uld, giving him an enormous advantage over his peers. He recruited other exiled Goa'uld such as Tanith [6], Osiris, and Zipacna to aid him in conquering the galaxy. [7] Also, he conducted many raids against the other System Lords, without ever revealing his identity to them. [5]

He arrived on the planet Kheb where he attracted the attention of Oma Desala and tricked her into helping him Ascend.

Also, one of the civilizations he destroyed during his rise to power were the Tollan. It originally was Anubis' intention to force the Tollan into attacking the Tau'ri, who were protected by the Asgard through the Protected Planets Treaty, and could therefore not be attacked without igniting a war between the System Lords and the Asgard.

After having developed shields capable of withstanding the Tollan Ion cannons, their only measure of defense, Anubis, through his minion Tanith, forced the Tollan to build phase-shifting warheads, capable of penetrating the SGC's Iris protecting their Stargate. However, when SG-1 discovered what the Tollan were about to do, they were able to convince the Tollan Narim to destroy the already completed weapons. In retribution, Anubis ordered Tanith to destroy the defenseless Tollan. [6]

During a System Lord summit to discuss the possibility of creating a new order, as much of their peers had recently fallen, Anubis sent Osiris as his proxy, hoping to be accepted back into their ranks. [7] In exchange, he proposed to destroy the Tau'ri, something the System Lords could not do without suffering Asgard retribution. Six of the seven System Lords present voted to accept Anubis as a System Lord, the only dissenter being Yu, the only System Lord still alive from the time of Anubis' original banishment. While the summit was taking place, Anubis ordered Zipacna to attack the Tok'ra base on Revanna, causing their near-destruction. [5]

In an attempt to destroy Earth, he sent an asteroid containing explosive naqahdah on a collision course with Earth, hoping that either the impact would destroy the planet, or that if the SGC was successful in destroying the asteroid, the naqahdah inside would create a big enough explosion to take Earth with it. This plan eventually also proved to be unsuccessful, as Samantha Carter discovered the naqahdah and decided to fly the asteroid through Earth via a hyperspace window. (SG1: Fail Safe) Several months later, Anubis, through his minion Osiris, attacked a planet protected by the Protected Planets Treaty. The sole Asgard ship sent, a Beliskner class cruiser commanded by Thor, was no match for Anubis' improved Ha'taks, and was easily destroyed. He subsequently took Thor captive, and probed his mind to learn more about Asgard technology. However, he was eventually rescued by SG-1, and reinforcements of three O'Neill class battleships commanded by Freyr. Outnumbered, Anubis was forced to flee from the battle. (SG1: Revelations) Afterwards, Anubis tried to destroy the Tau'ri several months later by using an Ancient weapon capable of sending immense energy through a Stargate. This energy would build up in Earth's Stargate, until it would overload and explode, wiping out all life on the planet. His plan was foiled when Jack O'Neill sent the gate millions of kilometers from Earth through hyperspace, by attaching it to a prototype F-302. The weapon itself was later destroyed by Rya'c, Teal'c's son. (Redemption, Part 2)

At the summit of the System Lords, Anubis dispatched Osiris as his representative in the petition to re-join their ranks. As a sign of his power, he offered to destroy Earth as a gift to the System Lords. (SG1: Last Stand, Part 2)

Anubis kept Jonas Quinn alive as he believed that he was still useful as his physiology merited further experimentation. (SG1: Homecoming)

He decided to spare Ba'al's life but only so that he would witness the fruits of Anubis's labor when he planned to retake Dakara. Once done, he intended to use the device on the planet and wipe all life across through the modified Stargate network. (SG1: Threads)

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Anubis was a humanoid figure wearing a cowl and a mask that hid his features. (SG1: Revelations) In reality, he was a partially Ascended being and thus made of energy. The black mask he wore was some kind of shield that kept his form intact. (SG1: Full Circle)

Among the Goa'uld, he was noted for being a particularly evil individual who had committed unspeakable crime to the point that they had banished him. (SG1: Last Stand, Part 2) He considered betrayal worse than failure and cowardice. (SG1: Threads)

He found betrayal to be worse than failure or cowardice amongst his subjects. (SG1: Threads)

Ultimately, he had a grand design for the galaxy with this involving destroying all life in it and recreating it according to his liking. (SG1: Threads)

A crafty figure, he came to know the 'in' and 'outs' of the rules that governed the Ascended Beings. This allowed him to operate with impunity and not be punished by the Others as a result. (SG1: Threads)

Through his genetic experiments, he came to breed a son that was a human possessing his DNA with this offspring going by the name of Khalek. (SG1: Prototype)

Powers and abilities

As a Goa'uld, Anubis was originally a member of this parasitic race that took other beings as host bodies for themselves. (Last Stand, Part 2) Their kind possessed a genetic memory which meant any offspring belonging to him possessed his memories. (SG1: Prototype)

Though he was half-Ascended, the Others kept his powers contained to prevent him from conducting actions on a vast cosmic scale. As such, he was allowed to conduct any action that he could have done as a regular ordinary Goa'uld. In this form, it was said that he could not be killed not even by another Ascended Being. (SG1: Threads)

He was noted to had used the Ancient language as part of the code in his vessels. (SG1: Prototype)

It was shown that Anubis had created a hidden laboratory where he conducted experiments in creating genetic hybrids. Among these included humans possessing Goa'uld DNA allowing them to inherit his memories and making them his children. (SG1: Prototype)

At one point, he was noted to had stood amongst the ranks of the System Lords until his banishment. (SG1: Last Stand, Part 2)

As a Goa'uld, he commanded many Jaffa warriors who served him. (SG1: Revelations)

Anubis once used a specially constructed mothership that was far larger than other Goa'uld vessels. It served as his flagships holding a legion of troops and attack craft along with highly advanced offensive as well as defensive systems. (SG1: Full Circle) The ship contained numerous heavy plasma turrets, capable of making this vessel a truly formidable craft even without the central superweapon. Each turret was composed of two large cannons, which fired Staff cannon-like bolts. (SG1: Fallen) A powerful reactor system was housed in the center of the ship and provided power to such systems as standard weapons, shields and hyperdrive. However, using the Eyes of the Goa'uld, the total power of the ship could be increased 10-fold, enabling the use of the superweapon. (SG1: Full Circle) Anubis' mothership boasted a powerful energy-shield capable of protecting the vessel from even the intense bombardment of an entire Goa'uld fleet. Weapons fire that struck the shield resulted in an orange energy field extending across the craft protecting the hull from damage. However, when in the atmosphere of a planet, the shield strength was reduced to only 40% effectiveness. In case of destruction, a disc-shaped escape craft was situated at the crown of the ship allowing its master to leave with the vessel containing hyperspace capabilities. (SG1: Homecoming)
