Fafnir was once
After the two travellers departed, Regin was in favor of hunting them and all Asgardians down, but Hriedmar tried to appease him, before Fafnir was driven by the curse to stab them both, for him to keep the gold for himself. Hriedmar was killed, and Regin buried him, oathing the death of Fafnir and all Asgardians. Fafnir escaped with the gold and hid himself in a cave. Starving, he began to drunk of curse-magic to survive, and eventually transformed into a dragon, his outsides matching with his insides. Meanwhile, Regin crafted a powerful sword, Gram, in his need of vengeance towards his brother and all Asgardians. Eventually, he came across Sigurd, and had him slay his brother in exchange for the sword and the dragon-gold. Fafnir's heart was taken by Sigurd to be eaten, Regin having told him that eating a dragon's heart rendered impervious to death except by magic. The gold was left to be there, as no one would attempt to steal from Sigurd. Fafnir's blood formed a pool that could pass the curse and power of the dragon onto another. (Loki: Agent of Asgard v1 #3)
Later on, the King of Nastrond rose to power in the extradimensional realm on the continent of Asgard. Long ago, it was said that their land was a place where an evil people dwelt whose actions dared defy the Asgardian All-Father Odin himself. Such was his mighty wrath that he came to destroy the entire countryside and insured that nothing could live there anymore. The injured King was liked to die in his ruined kingdom but came to find a radiant pool whose magical properties came to transform him into a being that could survive in the deadly wastelands of Nastrond. (Thor v1 #134) For countless centuries, he waited in this barren land as he waited for the kin of Odin to become his victims. (Thor v1 #135)
When Volstagg's comrades arrived at the scene, Fafnir struck from below in order to claim the life of Thor Odinson leading to a battle with the thunder god. (Thor v1 #135)
Fafnir reappeared when Thor's stepbrother and perennial foe Loki sends the dragon to Earth to kill the Thunder God. Willing to do anything for such opportunities, Fafnir was transported by Loki to an island in the Pacific Ocean, to which Loki lured Thor by causing a tidal wave via the Norn Stones. After Thor dealt with the tidal wave, Loki animated a series of stone statues to attack Thor, then to the cavern where Fafnir awaited. As Loki laughed, Fafnir missed Thor with a fiery flame burst, then stunned him with a slap. As Fafnir cursed Odin's name and curse, Thor recovered and struck Fafnir to the ground with a mighty blow of Mjolnir. When Loki prepared to aid Fafnir, Thor used the Norn Stones he had recovered to focus a lightning bolt that stunned both foes. Odin then appeared, telling Fafnir had he petitioned him for a second chance, he would have obtained it; instead, having chosen the base path of vengeance, he was banished back to the bleak core of Nastrond eternally in his dragon form. (Thor v1 #318)
Somehow trapped beneath Earth, Fafnir grew larger and more powerful over time. During some sort of quake, Fafnir was released from his prison. (Thor v1 #341) Off the coast of Cape Cod, Fafnir suddenly surfaced, destroying The Astraglia tanker and swearing to have vengeance on Odin by slaying Thor. (Thor v1 #340) Advised of Fafnir's location by Loki, Lorelei traveled to a hidden passageway in an abandoned subway station. Confronting Fafnir, Lorelei attempted to use her magical allure to bend his will to hers, but instead, also possessing the power of persuasion, Fafnir enslaved Lorelei instead. Fafnir had Lorelei suspended from the top of a crane in a Manhattan construction site. When Thor saved Lorelei, Fafnir confronted Thor, shattering the building-in-progress on which he stood. Protecting himself and Lorelei with a vortex created by Mjolnir, Thor broke free from the rubble and smashed Fafnir in the chest with Mjolnir. Thor threatened Fafnir to tell how he came there and what he wanted, but Fafnir instead attacked, with fists and fiery blasts. Narrowly dodging the flames and noticing the rubble had been set alight, Thor summoned a powerful storm. Fearing the lightning assault that had defeated him long ago, Fafnir fled, burrowing into the ground to choose another battle site at some future date so that Thor could not trap him beneath the Earth again. Thor prepared to follow, but Fafnir's escape path had broken through into the river, and Thor had to stop to block a flooding of the subways. (Thor v1 #341)
He came to find himself trapped within a nightmare realm created by Hela who had acquired the Twilight Sword and was merging the worlds into her domain. (Avengers Prime v1 #5) Whilst there, he came to be the leader of a band of ogres who brought him a mortal named Tony Stark. At first, Fafnir had no need for the human until he found it that he was a friend of Thor at which point the dragon intended to exact his revenge against the Odinson's friend. Stark managed to escape and was saved by the intervention of Captain America leading to Fafnir's defeat. (Avengers Prime v1 #3) He then returned to see that Thor had come to his allies side and wanted to enact his vengeance against the Asgardian. (Avengers Prime v1 #4) However, he was convinced to lend his aid in stopping the goddess Hela from destroying the realms. (Avengers Prime v1 #5)
