Biography
Failsafe was a robotic construct that was created by Batman and whose origins were traced to an incident where his countermeasure protocols for dealing with the Justice League were stolen by Ra's al Ghul. These plans were used in a plot against his superpowered teammates in the League. Afterwards, Batman created a secondary personality in his mind to protect him from psychological attacks to break him with this resulting in the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh persona. This personality looked to create a countermeasure against Batman in case the hero ever went rogue and killed others with this resulting in the development of the android. The existence of the Failsafe was not known to Batman where the robotic construct was left in a dormant pod within the Batcave. (Batman v3 #127)
For years, Failsafe was dormant until the Penguin faked his death and framed Batman for homicide. The news of Batman now seemingly willing to kill people came to activate Failsafe who immediately started to hunt his creator. Its programming dictated that if Batman killed, the machine would awaken and eliminate him to preserve the symbol and legacy of the Batman. Upon activation, Failsafe immediately identified Bruce Wayne as its target and began its relentless hunt. (Batman v3 #125) He quickly overpowered Batman and forced him to escape just to effortlessly neutralize both Batgirls and Signal when they came to their mentor's rescue. Robin managed to take Batman to the Batmobile but the android managed to catch up with them until Nightwing managed to slow him down and attack him with the rest of the Batman Family, effort that bore no fruits as Failsafe once again defeated all the heroes with no effort. After stealing Signal's mask, he hacked it and retrieved the location of their new Batcave. Once there, he found Doctor Thompkins and forced her to give up Batman's location who had by now switched back to his Zur-En-Arrh personality. (Batman v3 #126)
Failsafe attacked Batman of Zur-En-Arrh and Robin in Wayne Manor but found them prepared for its assault and they managed to hide, Failsafe proceeded to destroy a painting Bruce's parents and threatened to destroy a picture of Alfred which managed to lure out Zur-En-Arrh who attacked his creation in rage. Robin intervened in the battle and was quickly defeated, Zur-En-Arrh kept attacking Failsafe uncaring for Tim's safety which caused Bruce's personality to take back control and tell Robin to get to safety while he activated the cave self-destruct just to find out that Failsafe had already deactivated it. But as the android was ready to finish Batman it was interrupted by Superman, who ordered him to stop. (Batman v3 #127)
Batman continued his desperate struggle, fleeing across Gotham and beyond in an attempt to outmaneuver the machine. Every effort was met with failure, as Failsafe not only predicted his actions but also adjusted dynamically to overcome him. The pursuit drove Batman to his limits, forcing him to confront the very nature of his contingency planning and the consequences of preparing a weapon against himself. In the end, Batman was only able to survive by being removed from Earth entirely, leaving Failsafe behind as a grim monument to his paranoia and foresight. (Batman v3 #130)
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Failsafe was an advanced humanoid robot created as a contingency measure. Its body was tall, metallic, and sleekly armored, with a design built for both intimidation and efficiency. The construct’s frame was primarily silver-gray with black plating, its head narrow and angular with glowing optics that emitted an unfeeling light. Its proportions mirrored a human warrior’s physique but with mechanical precision, giving it the presence of an unstoppable sentinel. Every joint, limb, and surface of its body emphasized lethal utility, lacking ornamentation beyond its armor’s grim silhouette. (Batman v3 #125)
Failsafe possessed no humanity, existing as a cold and calculating intelligence programmed solely to fulfill its directive. It operated without emotion, hesitation, or doubt, carrying out its mission with absolute precision. Unlike typical artificial intelligences that might evolve or question their purpose, Failsafe demonstrated unwavering focus, pursuing its target without pause and adapting tactically to every challenge. Its manner of operation suggested a personality defined entirely by its programming, leaving no room for empathy or compromise. (Batman v3 #125)
Powers and abilities
As an android, Failsafe could directly interface with technology. (Batman v3 #126) He was noted to be made from a variety of robotics which included Amazo tech. (Batman v3 #126) Failsafe was an autonomous robot created as a countermeasure to Batman himself. Its mechanical body granted it immense superhuman strength, speed, and durability, far beyond the limits of organic physiology. Its armored shell was resistant to conventional weaponry, able to endure sustained assaults from both human combatants and metahumans. The construct’s servomotors and reinforced frame gave it combat power capable of matching Superman in direct confrontation. (Batman v3 #127) It was noted that Failsafe was both fast and strong when compared to a human. (Batman v3 #126) He could easily overpower multiple people and toss them around with no effort and his blows deal devastating damage. (Batman v3 #127)
Failsafe possessed advanced tactical intelligence, allowing it to anticipate and counter nearly any strategy. It drew upon the full strategic library of Batman’s mind, further refined by the programming of the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh. This allowed it to predict Bruce Wayne’s tactics and adapt dynamically, countering every move with superior planning. Its adaptive combat protocols extended to metahuman adversaries, equipping it with specialized weaponry and stratagems to neutralize super-powered threats. (Batman v3 #126)
The machine carried integrated weapons systems designed to exploit the weaknesses of its opponents. These included energy weapons, high-output propulsion systems, and non-lethal but incapacitating devices specifically tailored for the Justice League. Its arsenal allowed it to function in any environment, including urban combat zones and space, ensuring it remained an unrelenting pursuer regardless of terrain or opposition. (Batman v3 #127) Failsafe could shoot target-seeking missiles from his body. (Batman v3 #126)
Notes
- Failsafe was created by Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jiménez where he made his first appearance in Batman v3 #125 (September, 2022).
- On Comicbook.com, Zdarsky commented on the character, "When DC approached me to write Batman, I immediately thought about things that could really challenge the character mentally, physically, and in terms of his relationships/ Failsafe is his Doomsday. When I started mapping out the story I got really excited about where it could take the title."
