History

The Fairy Tail guild.

Fairy Tail (Japanese: 妖精の尻尾フェアリーテイル, Hepburn: Fearī Teiru) was the name of a magical guild that existed in the world of Earthland. It was founded by a group of treasurers that had travelled to the town of Magnolia to recover the Tenrou Orb that was in possession of the Blue Skull dark magic guild. With Magnolia freed from the wizards, the team of treasure hunters debated on the future of their group as Vermillion considered returning to her home on Tenrou Island. Whilst having a meal with the grateful town folk, she came to hear their worries about an uncertain future now that Blue Skull were defeated. It was then that Mavis decided that she would form a guild of her own that would be based in the town and supported by its inhabitants. As a result, Mavis Vermilion became the first guild master of the newly created Fairy Tail guild that counted Precht Gaebolg, Warrod Sequen and Yuri Dreyar who were her companions. It was formally established as a guild X686 where its headquarters was in Magnolia whilst Tenrou Island was considered sacred ground. In that year, the guild participated in the First Trade Wars where Mavis displayed exceptional strategic skill in leading the allied forces to victory despite holding only a few soldiers leading to her gaining the epithet of the Fairy Tactician. At the request of Mavis, leadership of the guild fell to Precht Gaebolg who was made the second guild master of Fairy Tail. Vermilion was noted to had died sometime afterwards and upon her death she was buried on her home of Tenrou Island. He led the group until he began to secretly practice dark magic causing him to pass the position of leadership to Makarov Dreyar.

Fairy Tail had existed for at least several decades but has only grown to its current prominence and strength in the last few years. In this growth, it began to rival another large guild, Phantom Lord, and they began to be seen as symbols of the country. Trouble brewed for Fairy Tail when they accepted a Celestial Spirit Mage, young Lucy Heartphilia, who was the heir to the wealthy inheritance from Heartphilia family. Unbeknownst to any members of the Guild, Lucy had actually ran away after mistreatment from her father which forced him to hire Phantom Lord to bring her back. Jose Porla, Master of Phantom, decided to go about this by ordering his strongest Mage, the Iron Dragon Slayer Gajeel Redfox, to destroy Fairy Tail's Guild Hall and attack their members. Gajeel left the Guild in shambles and pinned up Levy McGarden, Jet, and Droy against a tree in the middle of the town with painted tattoos of the Phantom Lord Guild mark on their bodies. Makarov was willing to let the destruction of the Guild Hal go due to the treaty stating no Guilds should fight each other, but seeing his children beaten and displayed like this was the last straw. He organized Fairy Tail's mages and led an attack on Phantom's Guild, however was defeated when Aria of the Elemental 4 used an ability to steal all of Makarov's magical power. With Makarov recuperating and Fairy Tail licking their wounds, they were unexpected when the entire Phantom Lord Guild, now transformed into a spider-like walking mechanism, started it's way across the lake towards their Guild Hall. They prepared their Magical Cannon, Jupiter, to fire at the remains of the Guild Hall to take out the entirety of Fairy Tail in one fell swoop, but were stopped by the efforts of Erza Scarlet. This act saw Erza out for the fight, and with their fighting power now even lower than before with the absence of their other S-class Mages, Jose offered a truce if they only handed over Lucy.

All of her guildmates vehemently denied where they stated that they would never give up one of their own to an enemy. Angered by their refusal, Jose sent in ghouls he manifested to attack the members of the Guild to buy time for Jupiter to recharge. As Fairy Tail members then start fighting against the Shades Jose has just summoned, Natsu, with Happy’s help, readies to enter Phantom Lord’s headquarters and deactivate Jupiter. Lucy, who would like to fight as well, is put to sleep by Mirajane and is entrusted to Reedus, who carries her to the Guild’s secret hideout. Mirajane, though, having taken on Lucy’s appearance, readies to act as a decoy. Meanwhile, as Natsu is unable to destroy Jupiter from the outside, Happy advises him to rather attack from the inside, with the former agreeing to do so, entering the cannon itself. This leads the two of them to the chamber containing a large Lacrima that is likely empowering the weapon. However, as he tries to destroy it, he runs into Totomaru, a member of the Element 4, who displays the ability to control all the fire in the area, even Natsu's. Just as Natsu is then starting to gain the upper hand, Jose decides to use his strongest weapon, turning his guild's building into a gigantic, robotic Mage, the Super Mage Giant Phantom MK II, which gives Natsu motion sickness due to the building starting to move. As Totomaru takes advantage of this and tries to finish Natsu off with his Rainbow Fire, he ends up being frozen in a block of ice by Gray and then thrown up in the sky by Elfman, with two Mages having arrived to help Natsu. However, a bigger threat than the Jupiter cannon draws near as the Super Mage Giant Phantom MK II starts casting the Abyss Break. Thus, the members who infiltrated the robot search around for a way to stop it. Mirajane, still donning Lucy’s appearance, is shocked to hear that Elfman is among them, being worried for him. To end the suffering of her guildmates, she subsequently shows herself to Jose, claiming to be Lucy, willing to surrender and turn herself in. Jose, however, easily sees through her deception and captures her. As Mirajane is caught by the robot’s gigantic hand, Jose claims that he’ll crush her for trying to deceive him. Inside the robot, Elfman and Sol confront each other. While Fairy Tail's members continue to battle, Natsu runs into Element 4's top member, Aria, and the two are ready to fight.

When the core members of Fairy Tail disappeared for 7 years, the guild fell into near bankruptcy and could no longer afford to keep Fairy Tail's first building so it went into foreclosure. After they left it, they moved into a small tavern at the edge of the town and made it their base of operations.

In X791, in an effort to rise among the guilds, the members of Fairy Tail decided to participate in that years Grand Magic Games. To ensure a victory, Grandmaster Makarov Dreyar had two teams dispatched for the games with the first not being aware of the second. Both teams managed to pass through the preliminary rounds allowing them to compete in the games.

Whilst observing, Master Mavis kept an eye on the tactics of the various combatants in the game and made calculations on a strategy to defeat them. She shared her findings with the guild members participating so that they had a plan in place for the final round of the Grand Magic Games. This led to her being responsible for Operation Fairy Star with her calculations proving accurate and securing key victories in the games for the guild.

at the 8-Island Restaurant, Fried, Bickslow and Yajima read the newspaper and learn about the attack on the Magic Council and the arising death toll. As the Fairy Tail Mages work alongside Evergreen, they wonder where Laxus is, having gone out on an errand. Suddenly, a hooded figure appears in the door and, in an instant, destroys the establishment. Fried, Bickslow and Evergreen are all easily knocked aside by the intruder and he attempts to kill Yajima, however Laxus intervenes and takes over the fight. Shedding his disguise, the man reveals himself as Tempester, one of the Nine Demon Gates. However, despite his attempts, Laxus is ultimately able to overpower and defeat him. Forced into a corner, Tempester sacrifices one of his lives and unleashes Magical Barrier Particles, particles which create Magic deficiency, illness and can spread quickly. As Yajima, Evergreen and Bickslow collapse from this powerful poison, Laxus begins inhaling the particles, able to do so due to his Dragon Slayer lungs. Though Fried tells him to stop, Laxus is determined not to let anyone die as he tells Fried to get everyone home. In the guild, the affected Mages are treated by Porlyusica, who reiterates their highly serious condition. Fried tells Makarov that Laxus is responsible for saving the town, but Makarov recalls that the particles still spread and resulted in both a quarantine and over one hundred deaths. Not knowing this, Fried asks if the town is alright, to which Makarov answers in the affirmative, relieving him. As the other Mages in the guild are saddened by these recent events, Natsu is furious and angrily declares that now is the time to go to war.

In the wake of the Tartaros attack, the guild hall remained ruined and Grandmaster Makarov had all knowledge of the Lumen Histoire removed from the minds of the people. Makarov then decided that the end of an era had come and that guild members needed to spread their wings if they wanted to grow as people. Thus, he decided not to re-build the guild hall and instead decided to disband Fairy Tail for reasons he did not declare to the guild members. Instead, he told them to start new lives and forget about Fairy Tail whereupon he disappeared from public life. As a result, the guild members scattered where they attempted to start new lives though many of them came to struggle and miss their former guild. In the year that followed, Lucy Heartfilia began writing for Sorcerer Weekly and also using her time to track her comrades down. She eventually came upon Natsu who declared that he wanted to reform the Fairy Tail guild with the two looking to gather others. Eventually, she sent letters to all the members that she had located and asked them to convene at the guild's former home town of Magnolia in order to rebuild Fairy Tail. To comply with the Magic Council's rules, the guild nominated Erza Scarlet to the position of guild master whereupon Mest informed her Fairy Tail's greatest secret which was the Lumen Histore. He also informed her that Master Makarov had disbanded the guild in an attempt to protect them from the militaristic might of the Alvarez Empire. Makarov had departed to negotiate with the empire on the Western Continent but had been missing for sometime leading to Scarlet and her closest comrades staging a rescue mission. They managed to recover Makarov with the aid of their comrades whereupon Makarov resumed position as the guild master where he revealed that the Black Wizard Zeref was leader of the Alvarez Empire who intended to wage war against Ishgar. Despite this threat, Fairy Tail rallied under their master and prepared to battle the empire.

Overview

As a magical guild, all members of Fairy Tail primarily consisted of individuals skilled in the magic arts. This meant that they had the ability to use magic power and specialised in various magical skills. Similar to other Guilds, Fairy Tail was headed by a Guild Master with this position being passed between member to member. At the request of its founder, the guild's prime attribute was the idea of friendship and that all its members were to treat the other as family who supported one another.

One of the sub-groups within the guild was the Thunder God Tribe that consisted of three members who served Laxus Dreyar.

Wizards that held potential and power went through the S-Class Mage Promotion Trial. It was held every year where the Master selected the most prominent members to participate in the event to promote the wizard to an S-Class Mage.

Every year, the guild conducted the Fantasia parade during the time of the Harvest Festival whereby Fairy Tail wizards displayed their magic in fantastic performances. This was done to the benefit of the whole population in their home town. As a result, both guild members and the civilian population of the town looked forward to the coming of the Fantasia festival.

Serious breaches of the rules of the guild meant expulsion from their ranks.

It maintained a dormitory for its female members with this being known as Fairy Hills. (フェアリー ヒルズ, Fearī Hiruzu)

Outside their guild house, a sacred area of the group was Tenrou Island (天狼島 Tenrō, Jima) that was isolated from the rest of the world. It had the Great Tenrou Tree that bestowed its mystical blessing on all members of the Fairy Tail guild. The island was the resting site of the first master of the guild and it was because of this that the area was used for Fairy Tail's trials to promote its members up their ranks.

The greatest secret of the guild was the Lumen Histoire (光の神話ルーメン・イストワール Rūmen Isutowāru) that was powerful magic that was also known as the Fairy Heart (妖精の心臓フェアリーハート Fearī Hāto). Such was its importance that only guild masters were meant to know of its existence and location.
