The Alvarez Empire are an empire that feature in Fairy Tail.

History

The Alvarez Empire (Japanese: アルバレス帝国, Hepburn: Arubaresu Teikoku) was the name of a large country situated on the Western Continent of Alakitasia in Earthland. Originally, the land was dominated by 730 magic guilds where it was visited by Zeref Dragneel who subjugated them and forged them into the mighty Alvarez Empire. Initially, it was a small nation but began to absorb other countries and guilds into their ranks. Ultimately, the empire was created to achieve its founder's aims that included; slaying the Black Dragon Acnologia, acquire the Fairy Heart and to destroy the continent of Ishgar. As Emperor Spriggan, Zeref established his empire with one of his first followers being August who helped in the formation of their great nation.

In X782, the empire was noted to had measures to attack Ishgar with this being against the wishes of their emperor. However, Emperor Spriggan felt that it was not the time and commanded the invasion be halted with the superweapons of the Magic Council being a contributing factor to calling off the attack. Emperor Spriggan initially did not quell the unsanctioned war but in time halted it himself. By X783, it was known that all diplomatic relations between the empire and the nations of Ishgar had been severed. However, by X793, Hisui in one of her acts as queen of Fiore began to re-establish relations between her kingdom and the Alvarez Empire.

Around this time, Fairy Tail's guildmaster Makarov Dreyar travelled to the Western Continent in the hope of stopping renewed hostilities from the empire. He waited there for sometime to await the return of their emperor but was not aware of Spriggan's true identity. When Emperor Spriggan returned, he revealed that he intended to launch his invasion of Ishgar regardless in order to accomplish his goals. He then attempted to kill Makarov but the old guild master was saved by the Fairy Tail guild who managed to escape from Alakistasia. Afterwards, a gathering of the Spriggan was called to meet before the emperor with 7 of them attending where Zeref commanded his forces to launch an all-out invasion of Magnolia. This was with the purpose of acquiring the Lumen Histore and use its everlasting magic to destroy Aconologia along with all of humanity.

Despite the numbers deployed, the Alvarez Empire's attack was thwarted with Ajeel defeated and Brandish being captured whilst Wall Ehto's mechanical puppet being destroyed. Ehto and his comrades then prepared to strike at the port city of Ishgar before intending to continue their onslaught against Magnolia. Ajeel led the offensive but came to be defeated with various Shields of Spriggan similarly being defeated by Fairy Tail or their allies. Among those captured included Brandish μ who initially looked to get her revenge against Lucy Heartfilia but came to learn that the young Celestial Wizard was not responsible for her mothers death. Thus, she stopped her hostilities against Fairy Tail but reused to ally with them as she was loyal to her nation. However, the captive Brandish μ offered to serve as a negotiator with August in order to end hostilities between the Alvarez Empire and Fairy Tail. Around this time, Acnologia was drawn to Magnolia after sensing the presence of Dragons and looked to eliminate them. This saw him killing God Serena of the Spriggan 12 and his arrival became a threat to Zeref's plans. Wall Eehto was killed by Laxus Dreyar whilst Bloodman was destroyed at the hands of Gajeel Redfox. In time, half the Spriggan 12 were defeated and the threat of Acnologia saw Irene Belserion using her Universe One magic to reshape the land to send the Black Dragon far away whilst placing Emperor Spriggan closer to the Fairy Heart. This saw Mavis Vermillion's capture with Neinhart using his Historia magic to create facsimiles of the slain Shields of Spriggan to restore themselves to maximum strength as they fortified their position to allow for Irene to remove the Fairy Heart from Fairy Tail's founder. Despite her efforts, Mavis managed to flee when Invel was defeated which removed his chains on Vermillion and Fairy Tail renewed their onslaught against their foes. Irene herself ended up killing herself rather than slay her daughter Erza Scarlet thus bringing an end to the Universe One spell and restoring the lands.

As the battle continued, the various members of the Spriggan 12 were either defeated, killed or simply abandoned the fight. This culminated in the death of Emperor Spriggan himself at the hands of his brother Natsu Dragneel. After this, Fairy Tail and the wizards of the world participated in the battle against the Black Dragon Acnologia who was defeated by them. In the aftermath, Ajeel was appointed the new Emperor of the Alvarez Empire with Queen Hisui E Fiōre entering into peaceful negotiations with them.

Overview

The Spriggan 12.

In appearance, the Alvarez Empire was a kingdom that ruled under a monarchy with it being overseen by its founder who held the position of Emperor. Leadership of the Empire was held by the Emperor though it was able to operate even when he was missing for years. It was created from the union of 730 Guilds of the continent who were all merged together into a singular military force.

Amongst the most elite units within the empire were the Spriggan 12 (スプリガン１２ Supurigan Tuerubu) who were powerful magic users that served as the emperor's personal guard. Its members were also referred to as the Shield of Spriggan on account of being the emperors protectors. Due to the vast size of the Alvarez Empire, it was said that it was a rarity for the entirety of the Spriggan 12 to gather at one place. As such, when meetings were called it was only a few of their number that ever attended such sessions. Members of the Sprigga 12 tended to be loyal to the empire and even if they disagreed with the emperor they did not fight against it.

It was said that the empire had never experienced the pain of defeat and thus its warriors failed to understand the hardship of losing to another. Their soldiers were noted to be well trained and disciplined. They were shown to wield magical staffs that were able to fire energy at enemies.

A holiday held in the empire was Respect for the Aged Day (敬老の日 Keirō no Hi) which was held in the month of September where the elderly were honored and revered by the people.

Within the empire, the citizens had their own unique card game called Regenca that involved not letting the player's 'Goddess' fall into enemy hands.

As a massive militaristic empire, they could field huge armies with the largest capable of being around 2,300,000 strong. All soldiers were well trained and had magic power allowng even a small fraction of the total force to be a menace on their own.

Part of their arsenal included an entire fleet of flying ships that they could use to transport their ground troops quickly and to bombard enemy positions from the sky.

The home of the nation was on the Western Continent of Alakitasia with its capitol city being Vistarion (ヴィスタリオン Visutarion).

• Emperor Spriggan : male founder of the Alvarez Empire with this being the name of Zeref Dragneel when in Alakitasia.
• Invel Yura : a blue haired male wearing glasses who was a member of the Spriggan 12 with him having the epithet of The Winter General (冬将軍 Fuyu Shōgun) due to his command of ice magic.
• August : a male member of the Spriggan 12 who had the epithet of the Wizard King (魔導王 Madō Ō) and said to be the groups most dangerous member as he was said to command more magic than Zeref himself. He was regarded as one of the strongest members of the Spriggan 12. Unknown to anyone, he was actually the biological son of Zeref Dragneel and Mavis Vermillion.
• Irene Belserion : a red haired female member of the Spriggan 12 known by the epithet of the Scarlet Despair (緋色の絶望 Hīro no Zetsubō) who wielded a number of spells that included Universe One, Eye Magic and Dragon Slayer Magic. Among the Spriggan 12, she was noted as being as powerful as August and potentially even the strongest member of the Shield of Spriggan. She was actually the founder of Dragon Slayer Magic and the other of Erza Scarlet.
• Larcade Dragneel : a white skinned male who was the third strongest of the Spriggan 12 where he had the power of manipulating a person's senses thus causing them to experience hunger, pleasure or sleep. He claimed he was the son of Zeref though in reality he was an Etherious demon created as one of the Emperor's experiments in perfecting Natsu Dragneel and allowed Larcade to take his last name.
• Ajeel Raml : a male member of the Spriggan 12 who held the epithet of the Desert King (砂漠王 Sabaku Ō) due to his powerful sand magic.
• Bloodman : a male Etherious demon who was a member of the Spriggan 12 with the epithet of the Grim Reaper (死神 Shinigami) where he emitted Bane particles to kill those around him and also wielded the curse magic of Tartaros's leader along with the Demon Gates.
• Brandish μ : a female member of the Spriggan 12 with short green hair who had the epithet of Nation Destroyer (国崩し Kuni Kuzushi) that had the power of control mass.
• Dimaria Yesta : a blonde haired female member of the Spriggan 12 who had the epithet of the Warrior Queen (戦乙女 Ikusa Otome) due to her being a skilled swordswoman though her primary strength lay in her God Soul takeover spell where she often took the form of Chronos the god of time allowing her to stop time.
• God Serena : an orange haired male originally from Ishgar where he was the strongest member of the Ten Wizard Saints before he defected to Alvarez where he was known by the epithet of Eight-Dragon God Serena (八竜のゴッドセレナ Hachiryū no Goddo Serena) due to wielding the 8 different dragon slayer magics.
• Wall Eehto : a black-haired male Machias who was a member of the Spriggan 12 who was known by the epithet of the Judge (審判者 Shinpansha) where he commanded weakness magic allowing him to create machines that were tailor made to battle enemies by targeting their weakness.
• Jacob Lessio : a dark haired male member of the Spriggan 12 who was known by the epithet of the Assassin (暗殺者 Ansatsusha) where he wielded stealth assassination magic.
• Neinhart : a purple haired male member of the Spriggan 12 where he used his Historia of the Dead magic to bring back the dead through memories of the living and use them against his enemies.
• Yajeel : an older male who was the father of Ajeel and held the position of Minister within the empire.
