History
The Ferengi were a humanoid extraterrestrial species native to the world of Ferenginar.
In 2364, aggressive Ferengi marauders stole a T-9 energy converter from a Federation monitoring post. After leading the USS Enterprise-D into the Delphi Ardu system, they found their starship suddenly disabled by a mysterious power-draining field and initially suspected the Humans of being the cause. Acting with desperate hostility, they eventually agreed to a joint away mission to the planet below, though they immediately betrayed the Federation team by ambushing them with energy whips. They displayed a primitive, almost animalistic demeanour, jumping and hissing while expressing vocal disgust at the Federation's 'barbaric' customs such as their habit of allowing females to wear clothing and participate in combat. When they finally encountered Portal 63, the guardian of the ancient Tkon Empire, the Ferengi attempted to manipulate the entity by deceitfully claiming that the Humans were savages who should be destroyed. Ultimately, their duplicity failed when the guardian found their minds 'closed' and deceptive, leading him to release both ships only after Riker demonstrated superior wisdom. Humiliated, they were forced to return the stolen converter, and they received a parting 'gift' of Chinese finger traps that were a toy that had previously baffled the android Data but was sent by Riker. Overview
In appearance, the Ferengi were a diminutive, humanoid species distinguished primarily by their oversized craniums and massive, lobed ears that were extremely sensitive to touch. Their skin possessed a distinct orange-brown hue, and their faces were defined by deep wrinkles, a broad, flaring nose, and sharp, irregular teeth. (TNG: The Last Outpost)
Technologically, the Ferengi were an advanced interstellar civilisation with technology comparable to the Federation. (TNG: The Last Outpost)
