History

Surtur ruled them as their lord and master who resided in the Sea of Flames in Muspell. (Thor v1 #349)

Long ago, a young Odin journeyed through the wastelands where he entered Muspelheim with his brothers. The Sons of Bor went on a period of discovery where they encountered the Fire Demons who brought the three to their master. Surtur greeted the grandsons of Buri and confirmed their words that the fire giant would bring about the end of all existence in the future. Odin had threatened to destroy the Eternal Flame of Destruction that would ignite the demon's blade but Surtur stated that the flames could not be destroyed as their existence was decreed by the fates. This caused conflict with the Asgardians as the Fire Demons attacked but the sons of Bor used their power to freeze the fiery beings. Odin then merged with his brothers Ve and Vili to become a giant being who battled Surtur himself. The intensity of their fight caused Surtur to sink into the Sea of Flames whilst the merged form of the three brothers was broken returning them to normal. They quickly stole the Eternal Flames of Destruction and fled the angry Surtur after his Sword of Doom had been shattered. With the Fire Giant and Fire Demons in pursuit, the sons of Bor made their way to escape the Kingdom of Fire but Ve and Vili remained behind to delay Surtur to allow their brother Odin to escape. This led to their death with the doorway to Muspelheim being destroyed whereupon their lifeforce joined with their brother Odin to become the Odin-Power. (Thor v1 #349)

Many years ago, the Fire Demons were known to had raided other realms in a time when travel between the Nine Realms was common. One such raid was conducted by the demon Skulveig who found a remote Elf village which they burnt to the ground. In this attack, the Fire Demon captured an Elven maiden by the name of Aeltri who he kidnapped and took back to fiery Muspelheim. Once there, he had his way with her and she became pregnant with his child leading to the birth of a half-Elf, half-Fire Demon child she named Hrinmeer. The child was considered hideous by Fire Demon standards and Skulveig had forged a helmet to hide the boy's visage from others. However, in time, he grew disgusted with his offspring and abandoned him where at some point his mother Aeltri had died. Hrinmeer came to survive and grew to be a mighty warrior where he slew his father whereupon he escaped his fiery homeland. Afterwards, he journeyed across the Nine Realms where he burnt homes down and slayed all who opposed him as he became known as the Flame. Such was his rampage that his activities drew the attention of Odin who dispatched his favoured son Thor to deal with this warrior. (Thor Annual v1 #18)

A demon-horde of the Sons of Muspell came to Midgard where they invaded New York City leading to a confrontation with the Avengers. (Avengers v1 #249)

When Asgardia resided on Earth, the inhabitants of Muspelheim sent a representative of their realm to sit on the Congress of Worlds that was assembled by the All-Mother. (Mighty Thor v1 #10)

During the war of the realms, the Sons of Muspell attacked the Dwarven home of Nidavellir where they nearly overwhelmed the native defenders only to be destroyed at the hands of the War Thor. After defeating them, he journeyed to Muspelheim in order to confront the Queen of Cinders herself. (Mighty Thor v2 #21)

The Sons of Muspell later invaded the realm of Hel itself at the direction of the Queen of Cinders who sought to unite the various chieftains under her rule thus gaining command of the Great Army of Hel. (Thor v5 #2)

During the height of the War of the Realms, the Dark Council took their conflict to Midgard where the Fire Demons joined their allies invading Earth. (War of the Realms v1 #1) This saw them claim the lands of Asia as their territory with it being rechristened as New Muspelheim. (War of the Realms v1 #3) Their attack saw them fighting numerous teams of Asian superheroes who had gathered under the banner of the Agents of Atlas. (War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas v1 #1)

After the defeat of Malekith, the Fire Goblins were rounded up and sent back to their realm of Muspelheim. (War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas v1 #4)
