Biography
Francis Fanny was a male human who came to be an enforcer for Doctor Emrys Killebrew's laboratory known as the Workshop that was part of the Hospice for failed supersoldiers at the Weapon X Project. Francis acted as the strongarm for Killebrew, reining in the project's 'washouts' that were fodder for Killebrew's sadistic experiments whenever they stepped out of line. Francis himself had been modified by Killebrew - his nerves had been removed for better pain management, he had enhanced strength and intuitive capability, as well as having received subcutaneous implants for super-speed and agility, making Francis a fearsome opponent. (Deadpool and Death Annual #1998)
After endless taunting from Wilson, Francis was given permission by Killebrew to kill him when he manipulated events to have Wilson mercy kill one of the other inmates, which was against the rules as devised by Killebrew. After removing his heart Wilson's healing factor first manifested itself, regenerating the mercenary a new heart but also costing him his sanity in the process. Taking the codename Deadpool, Wilson hunted Francis down and seemingly killed him. (Deadpool v4 #2)
Ajax resurfaced years after his apparent death, now fully healed and augmented—returning as a relentless hunter of Deadpool and survivors of Weapon X. He methodically tracked down former patients from the Workshop and delivered brutal vengeance to each that Wade had once cared for. During his assault on a remote Canadian facility, he eliminated several guards and escaped mutants with surgical precision, using enhanced strength and speed to crush bone and shatter metal with a casual flick. When Deadpool finally confronted him, Ajax displayed cold, remorseless violence—punching Wade into submission before delivering a high-impact blow that launched him over a cliff. He then mercilessly severed ties with his past, referring to Deadpool by his birth name only to taunt him. (Deadpool v4 #14) Ajax ambushed Wade at a secluded alpine chalet, where Deadpool had sought shelter. He infiltrated the compound with lethal efficiency, disabling communications and isolating his target. In their confrontation, Ajax demonstrated superhuman speed by delivering a devastating sonic snap from his fingers that shattered nearby windows and knocked Deadpool off balance. He taunted the mercenary about playing hero, then lifted him bodily and hurled him through reinforced windows into the snowy abyss. Ajax retreated only after ensuring Wade’s apparent death—his departure as methodical as the assault itself. (Deadpool v4 #15)
Continuing his purge of Weapon X survivors, Ajax ruthlessly interrogated Dr. Killebrew in his mountain retreat, demanding the teleport frequency that would lead to Deadpool. He tortured the scientist with brutal precision, then detonated the facility when information was withheld. Ajax reprogrammed the facility’s teleport system using stolen data, ripping a hole to Deadpool’s location and forcing Wade into a trap. He then ambushed him with overwhelming physical dominance, allowing no room for negotiation. Though Wade attempted to fight back, Ajax’s agility and aim proved superior—and he left behind the remains of the Workshop’s survivors as a grim testament to his determination. (Deadpool v4 #16) In the climax of their feud, Ajax forced Deadpool onto a lakeside cliff, taunting him by virtually dragging Wade through his emotional scars. Demonstrating raw power, Ajax hurled Deadpool toward the water to short-circuit Wade’s protective armor. When Deadpool regained consciousness, a brutal showdown ensued: Ajax used his cybernetic enhancements to deliver rapid-fire blows and incinerating friction burns. During the melee, Ajax's armor malfunctioned, exposing key circuitry. Utilizing Deadpool’s trademark trickery, Wade enticed Ajax into falling into the lake. Ajax submerged, his armor overloaded and exposed, enabling Deadpool to seize him and snap his neck. With that strike, Ajax's campaign finally ended where his body crumpled, and his vendetta concluded. (Deadpool v4 #17)
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Francis was a tall, imposing man with a muscular build, enhanced through cybernetic augmentation. His features were often described as severe and emotionless, reflecting both his psychological conditioning and the removal of his ability to feel pain. When operating as Ajax, he wore advanced battle armor composed of reinforced metal plating and a full-face helmet, concealing his humanity and emphasizing his transformation into a weapon of vengeance. His mechanical enhancements were visible through exposed circuitry along his arms and spine, serving as a reminder of the dehumanization that defined his existence. (Deadpool v3 #14) In the field, he operated under the code name of Ajax. (Deadpool v3 #15)
Francis’s personality was defined by arrogance, cruelty, and an almost pathological need for control. The removal of his pain receptors made him numb not only physically but emotionally, leaving him detached and sadistic. He viewed others, particularly mutants and experimental subjects, as tools or obstacles rather than people. His obsession with Deadpool stemmed as much from ego as hatred—he could not tolerate the idea that a 'failed experiment' had defied him. Even as Ajax, with near-limitless power and advanced weaponry, he remained driven by insecurity and vengeance, unable to find satisfaction outside of domination and destruction. (Deadpool: The Circle Chase v1 #2)
Ajax was said to be an abomination of a man and that he was a being of pure rancor. Over time, he came to be primarily driven by a need for revenge where he enjoyed every second of it. (Deadpool v3 #18)
He claimed that he hated filth and as a 'cleaner' he went to purify the world. (Deadpool v3 #16) According to himself, he could not sit still for long when performing his duty which was 'cleaning'. Originally, he used to perform this desire when working for the Department but afterwards he did it to sate his own whims and desires. (Deadpool v3 #17)
To those he had captured, he was noted to torture to get what he wanted from them. This was to the point that he intended for them to betray their own grandmothers in order to stop the pain inflicted on them. He never tortured a person to kill them as he preferred for them to rest afterwards so that he could continue his torture of them all over again. (Deadpool v3 #17)
Ajax was acquainted with Dr. Killebrew with the two having worked together in the Weapon X program. In fact, he had stated that the doctor was responsible for 'building' him into his current form. (Deadpool v3 #17)
He noted that he never thought of what he would do after killing Deadpool. (Deadpool v3 #18)
Powers and abilities
Francis had enhanced strength and intuitive capacity, as a result of genetic modifications by Killebrew. After receiving implants, he gained superhuman speed and agility. His nerves were also removed to increase his tolerance for pain. (Deadpool and Death Annual #1998) As such, Ajax was an enhanced human, not a mutant or metahuman, and thus possessed no natural superpowers. His abilities derived entirely from the Weapon X program’s experimental augmentations, which granted him superhuman strength, speed, agility, and reflexes beyond those of a normal human being. His pain receptors were surgically removed, rendering him impervious to physical suffering and fatigue, though at the cost of emotional depth and empathy. His cybernetic implants enhanced his endurance and allowed him to interface directly with his armor and weapons systems. In combat, Ajax combined hand-to-hand fighting proficiency with tactical precision, relying on brute force and his immunity to pain to overwhelm opponents. However, his reliance on mechanical enhancements also made him vulnerable to damage to his systems, a weakness that Deadpool ultimately exploited in their final battle. (Deadpool v3 #17)
Dr. Killebrew once inserted a spinal tap into Ajax that could be activated with the trigger. (Deadpool v3 #18)
In the field, he was noted to had once worn a titanium-laced body armour to protect him. Part of the equipment included advanced optical sensors which could detect traps. (Deadpool v3 #19)
