History
Wildstorm
The Gen-Factor was developed as part of a long going program known as Project Genesis. Whilst International Operations (I.O.) was running, they deployed Team 7 that consisted of highly skilled operatives with the goal of safeguarding American interests. The Director at the time decided that he needed a group of super-powered agents and exposed the team to the Gen-Factor thus creating Gen 12. This had mixed results as those exposed developed powers but some died on the first day whilst others went mad as a result who ended up killing themselves whilst the remaining survived. In the aftermath, some of the Gen 12 decided to quit their life on Team 7 in order to become civilians. Scientists at I.O. at this point discovered that the Gen-Factor had been passed onto the children of the various Gen 12 members. Thus, I.O. became determined to gather the children leading to the Gen 12 members going underground which saw Black Razor teams being deployed to either persuade the Team 7 soldiers to return or kill them. Regardless, the children were taken back to I.O. where they were brainwashed to serve as operatives for Project Genesis. (Gen 13 v1 #4)
After the Gen-Factor was successfully integrated into Human test subjects. Miles Craven contacted Kaizen Gamorra and had him create a synthesized version of the Gen-Factor. He assigned Ivana Baiul one of his I.O. scientists to create an activator and booster drugs that would activate and enhance the powers of those who had the Gen-Factor, turning them Gen-Active. After the success of Team 7, other experiments were conducted. The successful Team 7 and the other successful experiments were all labelled as Gen 12. Due to his greed Kaizen also started selling his synthesized Gen-Factor to the highest bidders, resulting in Gen-Active humans worldwide. Unfortunately many of them were highly unstable and none were as powerful as the original Team 7.
Ivana Baiul, an I.O.-operative and scientist was charged with the creation of activator and booster drugs that would activate and enhance the powers of people who had the Gen-factor, turning them Gen-Active. After Team 7, other experiments were done on humans of their generation; Team 7 and the other successful experiments were all labelled as Gen 12. Kaizen also started selling his synthesized Gen-factor to everyone who could afford it. This lead to Gen-active humans worldwide, but many of them were highly unstable and none were as powerful as Team 7.
Project: Genesis restarted 15–20 years later and the subjects this time were the children of Gen 12. Craven hoped that the younger subjects were easier to control and that being born with the Gen-factor made their powers more stable. Apart from children of Gen 12, other children exposed to the Gen-factor in various ways were recruited as well. This time the subjects were labelled as Gen¹³, though this name was taken by a small group of Gen¹³ Gen-Actives. Another group took the name DV8 (also known as the Deviants). Many other Gen-Active teenagers have been seen over the years, mostly the result of various I.O.-experiments; like Nate, Tommy, Sadie (Voodoo Doll) and Leslie (Trauma Queen), four Gen-Actives that befriended Gen¹³ and jokingly called themselves "The Mongolian Barbecue Avengers".
Other Gen-Active teenagers that received their powers either by their birth parents or due to I.O. experiments.
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.
It was used by Lynch on Team 7. Because Slade underwent the chemical experiment, his Gen-Factor was passed down genetically to his children.
The existence of Gen-Actives was unknown though Caitlin Fairchild told Superboy that she along with thirteen others like her were immune to his tactile telekinesis. (Superboy v6 #4)
Overview
The powers that each Gen-Active receives, seems to be random. After exposure to the Gen Factor most of the Team 7 began to display strong telepathic and telekinetic powers as well as some healing factor. Their children however have displayed very different and unique abilities.
The telepathic link to each other is usually very weak, even unnoticeable to most. The link however is stronger between relatives and can sometimes feel when they are in extreme pain. The link also allows sensitive Gen-Actives to notice the presence of other Gen-Actives. The link is also seen making the sum of their powers greater when they are near each other.
