Biography
Ging Freecss (Japanese: ジン゠フリークス, Hepburn: Jin Furīkusu) was a male human who came to be the only grandson of his grandmother. Whilst growing up on Whale Island (くじら島とう, Kujira-tō), he came to spend much of his time with his cousin Mito Freecss (ミト゠フリークス, Mito Furīkusu). This was until he decided to take part in the 267th Hunter Exam not long after turning 12 years old leading to him leaving his hometown. After his departure, it was noted that Mito's parents died in an accident whilst on vacation and Ging's own father was lost at sea. It was said that he was the only participant to had passed the 267th Hunter Exam. Ten years later, he returned to Whale Island alongside his 2 year old son named Gon Freecs where he intended to leave the child in the care of his grandmother with him stating that he and the boy's mother were separated. However, he came to lose custody over Gon to his cousin Mito in court leading to her raising his son. Later on, Ging became a licensed member of the Hunter Association where he specialised in the excavation and preservation of archaeological ruins. He would use his own fortune to accomplish the perfect preservation and restoration of ruins so that everyone could see them. His achievements in the field of archaeology were exemplary and became a model for others working on ruins throughout the world.
In 1987, he and 10 of his friends were responsible for creating Greed Island (グリードアイランド, Gurīdo Airando) that was a video game intended for use by Hunters. They each became Game Masters whilst the game was produced and sold by Marilyn Inc. During this time, he came to apprehend a criminal named Razor who had been sentenced to death but took mercy on his quarry. Instead, he enlisted Razor's help in creating the game an hired the man who he brought to Greed Island where he became a Game Master. Initially, Greed Island sold very well but eventually fell into obscurity where it disappeared from the market leading to urban legends surrounding it.
At some point, he was in a city where he witnessed the young Kite with his compatriot of animals able to steal food for themselves. Freecss discovered their lair and made forged a friendship with the animals by the time Kite had arrived. He determined that the boy could become a good Hunter though did not desire to train the boy though he was persistent eventually leading to Ging teaching Kite. This eventually culminated in a final trial whereby he disappeared and challenged Kite to find him in the world. At one point, Kite went to Whale Island and encountered Ging who revealed that he had a son and that the boy was the one Kite had saved earlier from a Foxbear. He asked Kite that when the time came that he was to help in the training of the boy. At some point, Ging created a tape that he left for his son in case Gon wanted to be a hunter and meet him.
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Ging Freecss was a short male human who was only a bit taller than his son where the two shared hazel eyes. He was noted having untrimmed facial hair and black spiky hair. He was a former member of the Zodiac Twelve (十じゅう二に支しん, Jūnishin) where he had the code name of the Boar (亥い, I).
Despite his incredible power and massive reputation, he was actually a shy man who was concerned about his appearance and reputation. In fact, his reluctance in meeting his son had less to do with him worried about Gon hating him and more to do with him worried at what his son thought of him. Ging also showed somewhat of a stubborn personality to the point that he only wants Gon to meet him alone and claimed that it would be cowardly of Gon to bring a friend to meet him.
Due to his carefree and eccentric nature, most people often consider Ging to be a bad father to Gon. This might be due to his apparent lack of care when Gon was dying and never visiting him in the hospital. His indifference to his son's state caused the Hunters during the election to insult and chastise him. Despite all this, Ging cares greatly for Gon in his own way; he sent Gon through onerous tasks to strengthen himself rather than using parental guidance. However, at the same time, it is also implied that Ging cannot handle the responsibility as a hands-on father to his son.
His friends had noted that he showed a childlike enthusiasm when he created the Greed Island video game.
Ging had said that he enjoyed the journey and side trips along the way where he said that one could find something more important by the side of the road.
He had a cousin named Mito Freecss (ミト゠フリークス, Mito Furīkusu) who was a red haired woman of a similar age as himself. Ging came to leave his son in her care and Mito became an adoptive mother to her nephew.
Powers and abilities
Chairman Netero once told Biscuit that Ging was one of the five best Nen users in the world.
Aside from being famous for his power, Ging was known for the number of difficult missions he has completed for the Hunter Association as well as for his ability to disappear without leaving a trace, to the point that not even the Zodiacs can find him. He also seems to know how to use the mysterious runes that are affected by Nen, leaving Gon a box that could be opened only with his aura.
Ging possesses an extensive knowledge in various fields of academic studies, the most prominent one being archaeology. However, he claims that he simply studies what he likes without even receiving a formal education in them.
Before he could even react, Ging lifted up and faked a punch at Usamen, who was approaching him with hostile intentions. The speed of his movement and the power behind it were such that Usamen actually believed, for a moment, that he had been struck several times. A few days earlier, when Gon climbed up the World Tree, Ging commented on how long it took Gon to reach the top of the tree past the point of 500 meters, saying that he got tired of waiting for him. Although this shows that Ging is on a completely different level of speed, it should be noted that this was Gon's first attempt at climbing the World Tree and Ging told him it was not bad for his first time. Furthermore, he avoided a spray of gunfire at close range by three Nen users while casually conversing with Pariston.
Ging's standing within the Hunter Association and Netero's praise speak for his mastery over Nen. The first example of this is given when he is seen playing Pip-Play, a game in which a person moves around their aura to do tricks; a self-proclaimed master of Pip-Play was left flabbergasted by Ging's capability, as he created multiple bubbles of aura, altering their shapes, sizes, direction, and individual speed. As Ging himself admitted, however, this game has nothing to do with one's actual abilities, being no different than spinning a pen on one's finger. Since creating shapes with one's aura is considered a Transmutation ability, Ging might be very skilled in this field. Although it is still unknown into which Nen category he falls, he showed extreme prowess in Emission and Manipulation when he put his aura in a tape with the order that it self-deletes after playing. The command activated perfectly ten years later, and the aura was strong enough to block Killua's punch.
As a Hunter (ハンター, Hantā), he came to be a member of the Hunter Association (ハンター協きょう会かい[1] or Hハンター協きょう会かい,[2] Hantā Kyōkai) where he came to operate as a Double-Star Hunter (二ツ星ダブルハンター, Daburu Hantā) with him specialising as a Ruins Hunter (遺い跡せきハンター, Iseki Hantā). It was said that he was capable of qualifying for a Triple-Star License but had not done so. Such was his skill that he came to be a member of the Zodiac Twelve (十じゅう二に支しん, Jūnishin). Even after quitting the group, he retained all access to the benefits granted by his status as a Hunter. Over the course of his life, Ging had developed a fortune making him very rich with him being said to be as powerful as a president of a country.
