Biography

Wearing his battle armor in U.S. Avengers v1 #3.

The Golden Skull was a male human native to a reality designated as Earth-15061 in the Multiverse. His origins were largely unknown with many speculations on his identity.

Some believed him to be the son of an environmental activist who snapped and became a super-criminal with the son rebelling against his delinquent father by becoming everything he hated. Others claimed though that he was the nephew of the notorious Parnival Plunder and inherited his uncle's obsessions with material wealth as well as piracy. Another theory claimed that he was a descendant of Sir William Taurey, the traitor killed by Colonel Steven Rogers in the Revolutionary War. (U.S.Avengers v1 #2) On this world, a tumultuous event occurred known as Zero Day where the Mad Titan Thanos came to Earth and half the world's superheroes. Ultimately, he was defeated but the devastation caused left the planet suffering through multiple disastrous events such as the Euro-Crash and the Climate Wars. This left the planet in a state of recovery with not much left to loot. It was in this time that the Golden Skull came to emerge where he became among the world's most dangerous people. Promising riches to his minions, he gathered his Jolly Jacks where they came to destroy anything to soothe the Golden Skull's ego and sell the spoils for fortune. (U.S.Avengers v1 #2) After New York flooded, the Golden Skull led his pirate crew on a small craft to steal a cache of helium. It was then that this world's Captain America Danielle Cage attacked, shaking off gunfire and grabbing Golden Skull, but she suddenly vanished in a mysterious flash, disappearing into the timestream. (Avengers: Ultron Forever v1 #1) A joyful Golden Skull was singing as he drove his ship away, but Captain America returned, defeating him and tying up him and his crew. (Uncanny Avengers: Ultron Forever 1 #1)

The Golden Skull decided to travel to the relative past of Earth-616's modern era with his crew. (U.S.Avengers v1 #1) The Golden Skull would later set his sights on a particularly profitable target, an alternate timeline set in the past, where the catastrophic event that left his world in a state of ruin never happened. Together with his minions, the Golden Skull broke into the ruins of the Latverian Embassy, and got his hands on one of the world's last working time machines. Captain America tried to stop him, but failed to capture the villain. (U.S.Avengers v1 #2) Golden Skull led his team in committing several robberies, including stealing technology and gold and raiding garbage disposal companies, having realized that Arcade used these companies to house his robotics and his kidnapping victims. The Golden Skull and his team took over one of Arcade's Murderworld bases in a half-finished casino. Knowing that Captain America was after him with her new allies, the U.S.Avengers, Golden Skull decided to lay a trap for them. Golden Skull hosted an event at the Wyne International Hotel, inviting some of the world's billionaires to attend, but then he put the billionaires in stasis and replaced them with robot duplicates. Golden Skull designed pirate robots to follow him, making them listen to his speeches, then designed a special suit of armor for himself out of solid gold. He developed a trigger in his suit that, if pressed, would kill all the billionaires. (U.S.Avengers v1 #3)

The Golden Skull had the duplicate robots attack the U.S.Avengers, but they failed to take down their target as the heroes had come prepared. When Iron Patriot analysed one of the robots and determined its origin as a creation of Arcade, Roberto had Captain America sweep the area for a potential location that could have served as one of Arcade's base, and the All-In Casino caught her attention, with further investigation confirming its origin as a front company for Arcade's operations. When Captain America broke into the All-In Casino, the Golden Skull re-calibrated Arcade's robot fabricators to maximum power, countering the hero with an army of robot pirates. Once the U.S.Avengers arrived to provide assistance, having finished dealing with the robot duplicates at the gala, Iron Patriot located the Golden Skull's control room and confronted him. In addition to having outfitted himself in a solid gold battle-suit, the villain threatened to use a trigger in his hand to boil alive the millionaires he had abducted, who were placed in stasis tubes in the room. After Enigma shot a laser that cut off the armor's hand that was holding the trigger, the Golden Skull attempted to confront the heroes directly. However, his splendor proved to be his fatal flaw. Iron Patriot effortlessly tore apart the Golden Skull's armor, due to gold being a soft metal and denting easily. After being secured, the Golden Skull was teleported back to his time with Captain America. (U.S.Avengers v1 #3)

Overview

Personality and attributes

No one was said to know his true name but in his future reality would know the cold merciless mask of the Golden Skull. (U.S.Avengers v1 #2)

The Golden Skull's 'grift' was that his entire focus was on money. His goals were always the same which was to wreck everything he could to soothe his warped ego and then to sell the rubble for anything he could get from them. Ultimately, he desired a perfect world that was his own to rule as he felt he deserved it. (U.S.Avengers v1 #2)

He was noted for being one of the most dangerous people on his world. (U.S.Avengers v1 #2)

It was shown that he was not above betraying his own minions and killing them. He was also noted to never pay his minions anything. (U.S.Avengers v1 #2)

There were various accounts on his parentage and ancestry with the truth being a mystery. Some claimed he was the son of the environmental villain Green Skull, having rebelled against his father by becoming everything he hated. Others sustained that the Golden Skull was the nephew of the Plunderer, and inherited his uncle's obsession for material wealth and pirates. A theory even suggests the Golden Skull was a descendant of Revolutionary War fighter William Taurey. (U.S.Avengers v1 #1)

The Golden Skull had a range of operatives that were named his Jolly Jack. These servants were promised riches though in reality they were never paid and the Skull was known to kill them. (U.S.Avengers v1 #2)

Notes

  • The Golden Skull was created by Al Ewing and Alan Davis where he made his first appearance in Avengers: Ultron Forever v1 #1 (April, 2015).
  • The character was based on the Red Skull created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby.
  • In an interview on Marvel.com, Ewing commented on the character, "In motivation…not that much. The Golden Skull’s aim is to create ruin and make money from the rubble, and the more people he can cheat, lie to, and steal from along the way, the better. It makes him feel clever. I suppose The Red Skull might actually at least pretend to himself that he believes in something—as evil and monstrous as that something may be—but I’m not sure the same is true for The Golden Skull. He believes only in himself. If the Red Skull’s soul is a bleak, shriveled lump of bile and ash, the Golden Skull’s soul is a howling void surrounded by golden mirrors that reflect it back, and there is nothing else in him. In M.O.—I don’t think The Golden Skull uses any methods The Red Skull wouldn’t. Although I don’t think The Red Skull likes pirates as much."
