Biography

Origin

Capturing Scott Free in Mister Miracle v2 #18.

Granny Goodness was one of the race of deities known as the New Gods and an inhabitant of the planet Apokolips. She was originally called Goodness by her parents and from a young age was enrolled in the military of her world. During this time, she underwent training and demonstrated skill in her fighting ability along with her loyalty to the ideals of Darkseid. Around this time, she was assigned her own war hound that she named Mercy with her forging a close relationship with the beast with them working well together as a pair in the following months. This was until the day of her final exam where she was ordered by her examiner to kill the hound. However, Goodness refused and instead killed the examiner leading to her arrest where she went a public trial facing execution. Darkseid himself questioned Goodness on why he killed one of his examiners with her replying that she had done it in loyalty to the dark master of Apokolips. She demonstrated this by showing that her war hound would obey him first and her second. Darkseid then commanded Mercy to turn against Goodness who was prepared with an energy gauntlet where she killed her once faithful hound. The New God Darkseid was impressed at her foresight and willingness to kill her loved hound leading to him deciding to promote her into his inner circle leading to her eventual rise to be a close advisor to the master of Apokolips. (Secret Origins of Super-Villains 80-Page Giant v1 #1) At some unknown point, he was known to had gifted her Overlord who became precious to Granny. (Mister Miracle v1 #2)

Later on, a New God named Iluthin came to be a student at Granny Goodness’ Orphanage, where lowly Apokoliptians were transformed into soldiers of Darkseid. Iluthin had a rough training, and turned to thievery, stealing from his fellow students, the Apokoliptian armory, and finally from Darkseid’s head assassin Kanto 13. He was caught by Sergeant Skragg, and brought before Granny, and even though she promoted treachery, she was ashamed that he’d allowed himself to get caught in the act. She reminded him that only the strong survived on Apokolips, and had him run a gauntlet of his fellow students as punishment. He made it to the end with his extraordinary agility and fighting prowess, injuring his classmates along the way, but Kanto 13 was at the end, and started beating him to a pulp. Darkseid, impressed with Iluthin’s potential, interrupted. He used his omega-beams on him for a total wipe-out, and told him that if he survived his destiny would be altered. Kanto guessed the boy survived, teleported instead of disintegrated, and vowed to track him down. (Jack Kirby’s Fourth World v1 #9)

Darkseid made a pact of peace with New Genesis that required him to send his son Orion to be raised on New Genesis. In return, Highfather sent his own son to Apokolips, and Darkseid handed him over to Granny Goodness to raise in her orphanage. Darkseid told her to train him as a warrior, and to break his spirit. He hoped the boy would eventually try to escape Apokolips, nullifying the pact. In honor of this plan, Granny came to name the boy Scott Free. (New Gods v1 #7) Granny had her troops administer regular beatings to Scott Free for minor infractions in hopes of breaking his spirit, but Scott stayed strong through the help of his secret allies Metron and Himon. (New Gods v3 #9) Later on, the Green Martian Ma’Alefa’Ak opened communication with Apokolips and Darkseid became interested in the Life Equations of Ma’Alefa’Ak’s father M’Yrinn. Granny and other New Gods were sent to Mars to lull the Martians into a false sense of security. Glorious Godfrey explored the idea of an Anti-Life Equation with M’Yrinn and soon after Parademons raided Mars and kidnapped M’Yrinn and a number of Martian children. Granny brought the children to her orphanage to train, but J’Onn J’Onzz came to Apokolips and freed them. (Martian Manhunter v2 #34)

Fourth World

When Scott Free escaped to Earth, Granny Goodness was furious and sought his death. Thus, she enacted plans in capturing him with her first using Overlord who failed in his mission. As a result, her soldier boys were dispatched but they ended up capturing a follower dummy and Oberon instead leading to Goodness being angered at her recruits. However, Mister Miracle arrived to save his friend but both him and Oberon were sent into the X-Pit by Overlord. Whilst looking for a means of escape, Mister Miracle came to realise that the threat lay with Overlord and directed Mother Box into sending a burst of energy to attack him leading to his death. This led to Granny mourning the death of Overlord and she vowed revenge against Mister Miracle who fled with Oberon. (Mister Miracle v1 #2)

Darkseid made Apokolips universally automated, run by machines that protected Apokolips and kept the populace in line, but his elite troops craved the old days of war and glory. In frustration the Female Furies took pot shots at Darkseid’s Mekkanoids while Orion invaded the planet. Granny scolded them, but they ran her off. Supervisors were ready to execute the Furies for their traitorous behavior, but in deference to their former accomplishments as warriors they were only tortured with energy bursts. Granny, too, was punished for being unable to contain her troops. (New Gods v2 #6)

Roaring with laughter, Darkseid came to see the sun rise on Apokolips for the first time after Highfather had fused Apokolips and New Genesis into one world. He confided in Kanto and Granny Goodness that he always had a good sense of humor about the cosmos, and was honored that Highfather was going through such effort to distract him, but that he would not be foiled. He assembled an armada of spaceships from all the worlds and pantheons of gods he’d conquered, and aimed them at Earth. (Jack Kirby’s Fourth World v1 #3)

With Apokolips and New Genesis separated, and with Darkseid lost to the Promethean Galaxy, the Elite gathered to discuss business. Granny was raging about the fate of Apokolips, and Virman produced field reports that said the firepits overflowed, leaving most of the planet uninhabitable. In addition he noted the massive loss of civilian lives and surface structure damage. Desaad was not impressed, noting that, as always Virman focused on the details and failed to appreciate the big picture. Desaad feared that without Darkseid all of Apokolips would plunge into civil war. Kanto warned him that previous experience showed the folly of tring to take Darkseid’s mantle when he was gone, and insinuated that he could assassinate Desaad. For once Desaad showed backbone, warning Kanton that the Parademons were loyal to him in Darkseid’s absence. Granny broke them up, and told them to focus on their master Darkseid, and finding a way to free him from the Source Wall. (Jack Kirby’s Fourth World v1 #9)

Final Crisis

Darkseid came to be responsible for capturing the Greek pantheon. It was then that Granny Goodness began to take the form of Artemis. In this form, she masqueraded as the goddess where she offered to turn mortals into Amazons. However, in reality, she was using them and putting them through training so that only the worthy among them would become new Female Furies. (Countdown v1 #21) The actual gods of Olympus remained trapped within a device located on Apokolips thus preventing them from aiding their mortal worshippers. (Countdown v1 #10)

Trapped on Apokolips, Harley Quinn, Holly Robinson and Mary Bromfield went on the run where they encountered the machine that trapped the gods of Olympus. Calling upon their magic, Bromfield was transformed back into her Mary Marvel form whereupon the gods empowered the Harley and Holly to fight against the Apokoliptian forces. Leaving her forces to fight the mortals, Granny attempted to flee but she was confronted by the God Killer who murdered her and departed the scene leaving her corpse behind. (Countdown v1 #10)

During the Final Crisis her essence possessed Alpha Lantern Kraken, granting her the powers of the Green Lantern ring and the authority as the Corps's 'internal affairs' officer. As such, Granny successfully arranged for Hal Jordan to be framed for the murder of the New God Orion. However, Granny's scheme was briefly exposed when Kraken regained control over her body long enough to plead for help from Batman, who was promptly overpowered by Granny and taken away for imprisonment inside of Darkseid's compound in Bludhaven where he is sealed inside a torture device. (Final Crisis v1 #) Granny then later poised to conquer Oa from within while she accused Hal Jordan of being corrupted by the souls of Apokolips, citing that his history with the Parallax entity made him an ideal and vulnerable target. Ultimately though, Granny's schemes duplicitous scheme was exposed by Honor Lanterns Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner. In a last ditch effort to fulfill her mission objectives, Granny attempted to siphon the green energy reservoir from the Central Power Battery but was stopped by Jordan and apprehended to be inspected. (Final Crisis v1 #5)
