History

The Grid was a digital frontier created as part of the Tron system and was programmed by Kevin Flynn. It was based on his earlier experiences after being digitised that saw him being sent into ENCOM's game grid by the Master Control Program. During this time, he came to help liberate all the programs from the tyranny of the MCP with the help of Tron. Afterwards, he came to make a new digital frontier populated by the programs from the ENCOM server with this world being called the Grid. To help manage this world, he had the Programs Tron and CLU 2 with him to assist him in overseeing the development of the Grid.

From the Sea of Simulation, a new form of life emerged with the ISOs that were a unique directive-free program that came to settle in the Grid. They began to mingle with the User-written programs but in time began to form colonies of their own.

Clu brought four of his Black Guard to ambush Tron and Flynn as the latter sought to leave the Grid. As Tron fought his guards, Clu dealt with Flynn, claiming that the user was 'corrupted'. His attempt to kill Kevin failed, however, when Tron attacked him. By the time Clu had defeated Tron, Kevin had already fled the scene. With Flynn nowhere to be found, Clu focused his efforts on destroying the ISOs, an act of genocide that came to be known as the Purge. By 2010, Clu had taken complete control of the Grid, fashioning the digital frontier into his own interpretation of perfection. However, he felt trapped inside the electronic reality, and desired to break out into the physical world so he could perfect it as well. For that, he needed to acquire Flynn's identity disc, and have someone open the portal from the outside.

Overview

In appearance, the Grid was a digital frontier that was represented by clusters of information within a computer system. Its creator had built it to be a digital utopia filled with infinite possibilities.

Perceived time in the Grid was measured in cycles and ran at a pace far greater than time perceived in the real world.

Locations in the Grid include:

  • Tron City :
  • Argon City :
  • End of Line Club :

A region outside the Grid was the Outlands that was a vast wasteland that was large unpopulated. A large digital ocean existed within the system with this bordering certain cities in the Grid with this body of water being called the Sea of Simulation.

The Grid was populated by user-written Programs that were referred to as Basics. The Grid's original population consisted of programs written or installed by Kevin Flynn. Despite their programming, programs were autonomous to a large extent, living daily lives similar to that of a User in the outside world, clubbing, socialising, resting, playing games, and maintaining hobbies outside the primary directives that dictated their day jobs. However, a unique directive-free form of Program emerged from the Sea of Simulation with these being called the ISOs.

A key element within every Program was their Identity Disc where their entire programming was imprinted on it.

Disc Wars came to be one of many gladiatorial events played out in the Game Arena, where programs are placed into separate compartments and forced to fight using their Identity Discs for the amusement of a vast, cheering crowd. A program struck by an opponent's disc or cast from the ring via a broken floor-plate immediately derezzes, losing the game. Gravity on the arena platforms can be reversed by small spherical devices which maintain normal gravity when moved one way and reverse it when moved the other. A change in gravity is signaled by a dial on the side of the ring.

Television

  • In Tron: Uprising, the new Grid featured as the setting in the animated television series. A program named Beck operated as the main character who met the injured Tron and assumed his identity where he waged a war against CLU2's reign.

Video games

  • In TRON: Evolution, the new Grid appeared in the setting of the 2010 video game prequel tie-in to the live-action film. During 1989, Clu corrupted an ISO named Jalen by turning him into a virus where he came to be known as Abraxas. This virus infected many Basic and ISOs on the Grid, and once it was discovered Abraxas was an ISO then other programs started to turn against the ISOs. Meanwhile, Kevin Flynn created a program called Anon to protect the system and keep it from harm or corruption.
