History

At some point, the practice of placing Harnesses were used by the aliens with the act being doen on the Skitter race. (Episode: What Hides Beneath) This saw the implantation of Harnesses onto the young human hosts to make them docile. (Episode: Young Bloods)

Around seven months after the arrival of the Volm, the city of Charleston was provided alien medical technology that allowed for the removal of the Espheni Harnesses. The device was used to remove the implants from captured children at an alien slave mining post. (Episode: On Thin Ice)

When Maggie was paralyzed, Dr. Glass decided to enlist Cochise help in a procedure in healing her where he suggested perhaps extracting the serum from the Harnessed child Denny and inject it within Maggie. However, one the dangers in this possible raid healing treatment was that it could induce anaphylactic shock in the subject and also harmed the donor as if too much of the bioplasma fluid was removed. The treatment failed with Ben Mason volunteering to transplant his spikes to Maggie with Cochise providing Volm equipment for the task. (Episode: A Thing with Feathers)

Overview

These implants were described as being parasites that were attached to host bodies. (Episode: Collateral Damage) A Harness was typically shown to fuse with the spine of a host. (Episode: What Hides Beneath) The spikes that resided imparted several abilities that included enhanced strength such as being able to lift cars and better agility such as being able to jump from a rooftop without injury. These include curing any disabilities or illnesses such as bad eyesight. (Episode: At All Cost) The spikes created from the Harness released a form of engineered bio-plasma that healed the injuries of the host. (Episode: Respite) Furthermore, they increased the senses of the host such as allowing them to detect higher frequency noises that manifested as a buzzing sound in the head and also gave them Skitter-vision. These traits allowed them to actually engage in communication with Skitters who were not able to speak human languages. However, the long-term side effects of their use was not known as it was believed there were dangers of the device if it were not completely removed. It was believed that the spikes stopped stem cell production in the human body and potentially shortened a lifespan. (Episode: At All Cost) Harnessed hosts were able to experience the pain from the alien they were connected to at the time. (Episode: Mind Wars)

Long term presence of a Harness on a host distorted their physiology to the point that they did not resemble their original species. They also imparted greater than human capabilities and more alien traits until the host was fatally wounded whereupon the harness allowed the original personality to briefly manifest before death. (Episode: Collateral Damage) Even when removed, a lingering trace of the Harness allowed for the aliens such as Skitters to awaken the former host and influence them. (Episode: Prisoner of War) The spikes were filled with an engineered bioplasma with this serum being the means for the quick regeneration in the host. Each individual spike was a living organism that had tendrils stretched into a host. (Episode: A Thing with Feathers) It took training and concentration to adjust to the enhanced strength as well as hearing provided by the spikes. Spikes were ultimately alien lifeforms with their own feelings and desires as they fused with the hosts DNA in order to take control of them. (Episode: Till Death Do Us Part)

Harnessed hosts were able to introduce a toxic bacteria through a bite onto an organic being which slowly destroyed the victims body as it spread into various organs leading to eventual death. (Episode: Collateral Damage) A Harness itself was able to inject a pathogen through a bite onto a victim which moved through the victim's capillaries near the skin and resulted in a lowering of the body temperature. (Episode: Homecoming)

Those implants removed through external procedures did not kill the implant but left the internal nucleus intact. This left fibers present within the host body which slowly began to regenerate within the body. (Episode: At All Cost) Volm technology was able to remove a Harness with the procedure being performed quicker the shorter time the subject had been implanted by the alien device. It operated by targeting and killed the implant itself whereupon it was easily removed from the host body. (On Thin Ice) This operated by extracting the fibers of the Harness without affecting the spinal cord or nervous system of the host body. (Episode: At All Cost)

These organisms were also referred to as Chemlocks by the Skitters. (Episode: Love and Other Acts of Courage)
