Biography

Origin

Heero Yuy (Japanese: ヒイロ・ユイ, Hepburn: Hiiro Yui)

Little is known about the early life of the young man who would become a Gundam pilot. His first documented appearance is at age seven, where he was the ward of his mentor Odin, a former member of the Alliance's secret weapons society Organization of the Zodiac (OZ) and then the professional hitman who killed the original Heero Yuy. In addition to protecting the boy (and giving himself an alibi), Lowe taught the child how to survive on his own and how to handle a gun. In AC 188, the pair went to colony L3-X18999 on a mission to assassinate the Alliance's General Septum. While Lowe handled the assassination, the child was sent to aid the colonial rebels who had clashed with the Specials. Taking an RPG, the boy attempted to destroy the communications tower (operated by a then twelve year-old Lucrezia Noin), but Instructor Treize Khushrenada moved his Leo in the way, protecting Noin, but badly injuring himself. Escaping, the boy found Lowe fatally wounded. As he died, he told the boy to live by his emotions, reminding him that it only takes one foolish person to change the world. Left alone, the boy began wandering the colonies until he was discovered by Doctor J. Admiring the child's bearing, J offered him the chance to pilot a Gundam and free the colonies. His mentor's words ringing in his ears, the boy accepted.

Operation Meteor

As Wing Gundam entered the Earth's atmosphere, Heero finds a civilian shuttle in his path containing Vice Foreign Minister Darlian and his foster daughter Relena. Contemplating the destruction of the shuttle, he is interrupted by an Alliance patrol squadron, led by OZ's ace pilot, Zechs Merquise. Even with Wing Gundam's incredible capabilities, Zechs manages to get close enough to grapple the Gundam with his Leo freefalling towards the Pacific Ocean below and then escape, sending the two machines to the bottom of the ocean. Washing up on the beach, Heero's unconscious body is found by Relena and he attempts to kill himself with a suicide bomb built into his flight suit. The saltwater having damaged the explosive, only the detonator fires and knocks him over, providing a sufficient distraction for Heero to escape both Relena and the medics she called. This could also have been his attempt to erase the data of the Gundam built into his suit's computers. He enrolls in the Saint Gabriel Academy as a cover for his activities. Coincidentally, Relena also attends the same school and when she attempts to invite Heero to her birthday party, he tears the invitation in half and threatens to kill her.

Heero tries to destroy the sunken Wing Gundam in order to prevent OZ from getting their hands on it. He breaks into an Alliance naval base and prepares several torpedoes to destroy the Gundam. However, he is interrupted first by Relena, who decided to look for him instead of attending her own party, and another Gundam pilot, Duo Maxwell, who had found the Wing Gundam and intended to keep it for spare parts. An altercation between the three ensues, where Heero is shot and ends up damaging both the Wing Gundam and the Gundam Deathscythe in his attempt to destroy the Wing Gundam. Heero is taken to an Alliance hospital by Relena and placed under guard while Relena is interrogated by Major Sally Po. Duo breaks him out, but during their escape, Heero does not open his parachute as they jump out the building. Though fully intending to die, Relena calls out to him and he opens the chute. He and Duo recover their damaged Gundams, though Heero secretly steals parts from Duo's Gundam Deathscythe and uses the repaired suit for a mission to destroy an enemy carrier transporting Gundanium alloy.

When Vice Foreign Minister Darlian is assassinated by OZ for supporting colonial independence, Relena, as the only witness, is labelled a potential risk and marked for death as well. She is rescued by Doctor J, who tells her about Heero and his mission. Returning to Earth in time for a party at the school, Relena confronts Heero, revealing that she met Doctor J and now knows everything about Heero and that he had no reason to consider her an enemy. Unfortunately, OZ sends a mobile suit team to attack the school with the intent of killing Relena. Heero drives them off with Wing Gundam before running away as well, still stunned by the fact that he not only couldn't bring himself to kill Relena, but that he actually saved her from certain death.

When Heero is informed of an OZ meeting at the New Edwards Base in California, he and Duo attack the base and encouter two more Gundams and their pilots, Trowa Barton and Quatre Raberba Winner. During the fight, a shuttle bearing OZ markings attempts to flee. Heero destroys the shuttle, unaware that he has killed Alliance representatives aiming for better relations with the colonies and not OZ officials as believed. In reaction, Alliance General Septum declares war on the colonies. The final Gundam pilot, Chang Wufei, reveals the truth and Heero is consumed with feelings of guilt, unable to fight back against the OZ soldiers coming to destroy the base. He finds his resolve again former Alliance Major Sally Po informs them that OZ is planning to detonate all the missiles at the New Edwards Base to all and destroy everything in one stroke and manages to prevent the base's destruction.

Some time later, Doctor J informs Heero that OZ is transporting its new Taurus model to its base in Siberia. During this attack, Heero encounters Zechs Merquise, who intends to test his Tallgeese unit against Wing Gundam. The duel is interrupted when Lady Une threatens to use the Alliance's satellite missiles to attack the colonies unless the Gundams surrender. Doctor J transmits an offered personal surrender, though not the surrender of the Gundams. Heero realizes the meaning of Doctor J's words and detonates the Wing Gundam and nearly killing himself. Trowa recovers Heero's body and nurses him back to health. After recovering, Heero sets off to seek penance for killing the Alliance's pacifists by tracking down their families and offering to let them kill him as payback.

During the course of their journey, Heero and Trowa meet by Lucrezia Noin, who presents an offer from Zechs to finish his and Heero's duel in Antarctica, where Zechs has been rebuilding Wing Gundam in secret. Heero agrees, but chooses to fight Zechs with Trowa's Gundam Heavyarms instead, feeling that using the rebuilt Wing Gundam would make him feel indebted to Zechs during the fight. Their battle is once again interrupted, this time by Relena, who has arrived with a message from Field Marshall Noventa's widow urging Heero not to be so careless with his life. With OZ's pursuit team on its way to apprehend the Gundams, Trowa arrives in the Wing Gundam and he and Heero escape while Zechs covers everyone's escape, shouldering the blame.

Overview

Personality and attributes

The nameless boy who is given the codename Heero Yuy is of Japanese descent. Heero is a complex character, initially appearing as a fifteen-year-old boy with a cold stoic demeanour more fitting for a battle hardened veteran.

When Relena Darlian meets Doctor J, the engineer comments that Heero is actually a very kind-hearted young man who keeps his emotions reined in while fighting. On many occasions, Heero espouses the philosophy that being emotional on the battlefield will only result in heartbreak, so soldiers need to be able to fight without caring about their opponents. However, he believes that there's nothing wrong with showing emotion in normal situations. The most important philosophy to Heero's life, however, is the one his mentor Odin Lowe espouses: That the best way to live life is by one's emotions.

Powers and abilities

Heero is the most skilled and focused in combat out of the five pilots, both in mobile suits and out, which makes him a great asset and a deadly force to be reckoned with.
