Post-Crisis

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

A noted assassin, he offered his services to others that could afford him. On Thanksgiving Day, he was contacted by Lexcorp board director George Markham who faced removal from his position by Lex Luthor, Jr. who was seemingly the son of Lex Luthor. Looking to maintain his power, Markham came to make contact with the Hellgrammite in Gotham where he asked the superpowered mercenary to kill Luthor Jr. (Action Comics v1 #673) He came to observe his target but would note the opposition he would receive in the form of Superman. The Hellgrammite then looked to find a means of dealing with the hero and went towards planning the careful assassination of Luthor the Second. (Action Comics v1 #674) An opportunity later presented itself when Luthor the Second was hosting a party on-board his massive yacht the Sea Queen that would be coming into the Metropolis harbour. He managed to swim across the water and board the ship without incident where he went to attack his target. However, he came to be surprised to find Superman at the scene leading to a battle between the two. This resulted in Hellgrammite deciding to escape in order to find another opportunity to kill his quarry. In an attempt to capture the villain, Superman took their fight underwater thinking this would lead to Hellgrammite's defeat. The assassin though showed himself to be more adept underwater and managed to escape from the Man of Steel. (Action Comics v1 #676)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

Overview

Personality and attributes

He was considered to be the most dangerous criminal alive. The Hellgrammite was considered to be pure evil. (Brave and the Bold v1 #80)

As a mercenary, he offered his services to prospective clients where he was willing to kill select targets in exchange for payments. He expected prompt payment into his Swiss bank account and warned those that did not pay him would receive a visit from the Hellgrammite who would take his revenge on them. (Action Comics v1 #673)

Powers and abilities

Originally, he was noted for being an entomologist and a scholar on insects. (Brave and the Bold v1 #80)

It was shown that he was quite adept in the water and able to operate in aquatic environments without any issue. In fact, he was noted to be even more slippery in such environments making it difficult to grab onto him. (Action Comics v1 #676)

His skin consisted of a carapace with the outer covering being a thousand times than the insect that was his namesake. Similarly, his fists inherited the same steel hardiness as that of a hellgrammite. The insect power was said to be similar to how an ant could carry 50 times its own weight or how a locust could leap 30 times their own length. (Brave and the Bold v1 #80) It also protected him from small arms fire with bullets incapable of hurting him. (Action Comics v1 #676)

From his tail, he could discharge this web-like sticky substance that set faster than epoxy and held even tighter. The tail was organically a part of him though he could detach it from his body which he could do so in order to escape a foe who had grabbed onto it. (Action Comics v1 #676)

He deposited cocoons containing chemicals that helped renew himself every 24 hours. These were constructed of a steel-like fibre that was impervious to harm with even dynamite capable of breaching it. (Brave and the Bold v1 #80)
