Golden Age

Lex Luthor

At some point, he came to operate from a city suspended high in the stratosphere by dirigibles. With his scientific machinations, he plunged the two small European countries of Galonia and Toran in a state of war. his saw him sabotaging a peace conference looking to end the war but his plot was ultimately foiled by Superman. (Action Comics v1 #23)

Following his recent defeat, Luthor swore to get even with the Man of Steel. To that end, he began experiments in electricity that gave him super-strength. However, he sought to even greater power to match Superman leading to Lthor taking numerous rich businessmen hostage. This allowed him to force Superman to acquire the Powerstone from the Lost Mountain of Krowak in Skull Valley. The Man of Steel succeeded in the task but by the time he returned to Luthor the powers that empowered him had faded. This allowed Superman to capture the criminal which led to the freeing of the hostages and the villains arrest. (Action Comics v1 #47)

Later in his career, Alexei became more uncompromising, sadistic, and bloodthirsty, attempting a missile strike on the Daily Star for the sole purpose of murdering all of Superman's friends and loved ones, whom he was aware happened to be employed there. After Superman thwarted that evil scheme and put Luthor behind bars, Alexei was drawn by his Earth-One counterpart into a bait-and-switch scheme, wherein each Luthor would be transported to the other Luthor's native reality in order to try his hand at fighting the alternate Superman. Alexei's scheme to defeat the Earth-One Superman was to set off a series of explosions in a congested Metropolis street, in order to get Superman's attention, and then to send Superman hurtling into outer space with an anti-gravity binding-trap. Upon encountering the Earth-One version of Lois Lane, Luthor prepared to kill her. Fortunately, Superman returned in the nick of time and stopped him. The Luthors then rendezvoused on Earth-Three, where they extended their alliance to Ultraman. Alexei then took de facto control over the alliance and directed Ultraman to complete an ion-cannon for the purpose of destroying both Earth-One and Earth-Two. His intent was challenged by the Earth-One Luthor, who while occasionally homicidal still had reservations about destruction of such magnitude, and he was ultimately defeated by the Supermen of both worlds, as well as by the heroic Earth-Three Luthor. (DC Comics Presents Annual v1 #1)

Silver Age

During his childhood, he used to live in Smallville where was enrolled at school there. In that time, he was close friends with Clark Kent where the two were at the top of their class. One day, Luthor was involved in an experiment to make an antidote for Kryptonite at his home where as part of the process he crafted a living protoplasm being. However, a fire erupted and he was trapped when Superboy arrived to put out the flames but this caused the creature to be killed and chemicals to fall on Lex. This caused his hair to fall off leaving him bald and the destruction of his experiment caused him to swear revenge against Superboy. Initially, it was thought that once he calmed down that he would forget the incident but over the next few months Luthor was involved in a number of attacks against the Boy of Steel. The resultant shame he brought to the family caused him to be disowned by them where he continued his vendetta and became a super-criminal. (Superman v1 #292) His family in the meantime had moved to another city where they changed their surname to 'Thorul' to distance themselves from Lex. Luthor's parents told his baby sister Lena Luthor that Lex died in a mountain climbing accident. Later on, his parents died in an auto accident leaving everything to Lena. (Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane v1 #23)

Initially, Luthor sought to outdo Superboy as Smallville's hero through philanthropic acts making use of his scientific expertise. However, every endeavor by Luthor to improve the town's prosperity ended in calamity, and it was none other than Superboy whom the townspeople relied on to restore peace and order. Luthor inadvertently not only helped Superboy's already excellent reputation with the people of Smallville but also made himself the most reviled man in town, denounced as a good-for-nothing crackpot at best and a public menace at worse. (Superman v1 #292)

Whilst in Smallville, the young Lex Luthor encountered an alien being who he studied when his kid sister arrived in the laboratory. She accidentally was exposed to the psychic powers of the being that imparted E.S.P. abilities to Lena Luthor. (Adventure Comics v1 #387)

Lex Luthor was given permission to build a prison radio station to broadcast music to Smallville, and on a day pass he visited Pa Kent’s general store for some radio parts. He assured Pa he had no hard feelings even though Pa was on the board that turned down his parole. An oil field was built outside Smallville, and when the oil driller hit a gusher it kicked a boulder into the air. Superboy smashed the boulder, preventing it from hitting a plane flying overhead. The rock turned out to be red kryptonite, and Lana Lang and Pete Ross collected the fragments and handed them over to Chief Parker so the kryptonite could not harm Superboy. The Kents listened to Lex’s first broadcast on WPEN, and he dedicated a song to Chief Parker, who Lex said was a big man. Chief Parker grew to an enormous size, bursting through his police car. He soon shrank back to normal size, and asked Superboy if the red-k affected him, which puzzled Superboy, since red-k usually only affected Kryptonians. Luthor dedicated “Smoke Gets in Your eyes” to Pete Ross who started breathing fire in chemistry class, and “Reaching for the Moon” to Lana Lang who gained temporary super-stretching powers. Clark told the Kents he suspected Lex of being behind the red kryptonite virus spreading through town, but they thought he was jumping to conclusions. Luthor dedicated “It’s a Small World” to the Kents, who shrunk down to the size of dolls for a time, and “There’ll be some Changes Made” to Clark who showed up to school to find a Bizarro Clark Kent had taken his place in class. Superboy visited Lex who said he had nothing to do with the virus, his songs just predicted the red-k’s effects and said the song he picked for Superboy “Yoiu Leave Me Breathless” predicted that red-k radiation from Superboy’s body would destroy all of Earth’s oxygen. Lex said his one hope was to find a rare undersea plant that would eliminate the red-k virus, and gave Superboy undersea coordinated. Lex was actually working with the renegade Atlantean Kronn, who’d given Lex a mass hallucination transmitter that he used in WPEN’s broadcasts to simulate the red-k plague, even the red-k kicked up from the oil rig was an illusion. Superboy suspected the truth since a Bizarro Kent had turned up at his school instead of him being transformed into a Bizarro. He used his x-ray vision on Lex’s headset and discovered the transmitter. Superboy copied the transmitter, creating an illusion of Superboy discovering the undersea plant, ands Kronn sprung his trap, having placed clamshells filled with green kryptonite around the plant. Kronn saw the illusory Superboy die and sent a telepathic message to Lex, telling him he was safe to break out of prison. Superboy turned Kronn over to the Atlantean police, and returned to Smallville. Superboy and Chief Parker caught Lex escaping prison, and sent him right back to his cell. (Adventure Comics v1 #308)

He once orchestrated a plot to free the Phantom Zone criminals by masquerading as one of them named Dak-El in order to trick Superboy into opening up the extradimensional prison. (Superboy v1 #115)

Superboy created new tamper-proof Superboy robots in his arctic Cave of Silence. While he was hard at work, Lex Luthor, disguised as Prof. Ruthol, unleashed his own imitation Superboy robots on the world, and ordered them to cause catastrophes worldwide. The world s nations turned against Superboy, and the U.S. formed the Anti-Superboy Defense Council on the orders of the President. Superboy was alarmed that he d been declared an outlaw and Ruthol d been given funds to create kryptonite warheads. He had his Clark Kent robot pose as Voltran, an inter-galactic peacekeeper, who offered the Anti-Superboy Defense Council his aid. Ruthol, who suspected Voltran was Superboy, didn't want to be showed up, and lured him into a battle against his Superboy robots in a mine. Voltran defeated them, but one of the robots was loaded with kryptonite. Ruthol, thinking he'd defeated Superboy, revealed himself as Luthor and gloated. The real Superboy revealed himself, apprehended Luthor, and told him he'd make him tell the world the truth, that Superboy was still on the straight and narrow. (Superboy v1 #159)

From a distance, he came to watch over his sister who came to marry and had a son named Val Colby. During his observation, he came to discover that his nephew Val had inherited psycho-kinetic powers from his mother. (Adventure Comics v1 #387)

After he was arrested, he was sent to prison where he hatched a new plot at revenge against Superman. He used a device to transport himself to Earth-2 where his counterpart Alexei Luthor was similarly in prison. Lex had hatched a plot to swap places with his counterpart where each would target their won respective Superman. On Earth-2, the authorities released him as he did not resemble the Luthor of their planet. Despite his efforts, he was defeated by the Earth-2 Superman who banished him into a limbo dimension with Alexei similarly following him after his defeat. However, their defeat was factored into by Lex who then teleported himself and Alexei to another world that was Earth-3 where he had set a base of operations for their operations. The two then forged an alliance with the planet's Ultraman to eliminate Earth-1 and Earth-2's Superman. (DC Comics Presents Annual v1 #1)

After years of research Lex used his super atom-smasher to create a synthetic kryptonite isotope. He loaded up a rifle with synthetic-K bullets, and stalked Superman, who was at an exhibit showcasing the Petrified Spaceman, an ancient alien visitor that was in torpor. Lex's shot missed, but struck the Spaceman, returning him to life. Superman brought Lex straight to jail, but then had to contend with the rampaging alien. (Action Comics v1 #226) Lex used a tank armed with a sonic ray to rob a bank vault, and Superman was powerless to stop him because the tank had kryptonite inside. He took a steel sign and polished it into a parabolic reflector to turn the tank's sonic ray against itself. (Action Comics v1 #228)

Lex Luthor visited Smallville and came across an old newspaper story about Professor Dalton, who used a duplicator ray to create the Bizarro Superboy. Luthor stole Dalton’s plans for the duplicator ray to build his own, and showed off the ray to his lab assistant Vekko, bragging that he’d use it to destroy superman. Luthor posed as “Professor Clyde” and phoned up Perry White, telling him he’d come up with an antidote for kryptonite. Superman visited his lab, and “Clyde” had him stand in front of the duplicator way under the pretense of making him immune to kryptonite. The duplicator ray created Bizarro, an imperfect duplicate of superman with stony skin and a backwards mind. Luthor took off his disguise and ordered Bizarro to destroy Superman, but Bizarro realized he was a monstrosity, and was furious at Luthor for creating him. He grabbed Luthor and Vekko to take them to jail, and admitted to Superman that he didn’t know the difference between right and wrong and didn't belong in the world. Superman decided he’d have to be destroyed, reasoning that it was morally correct because Bizarro was lifeless matter in human form, but first had to deal with a massive tidal wave causing havoc at sea. Bizarro turned over Luther and Vekko to the police, who were horrified by Bizarro. He tried to prove he was a hero by saving a plane from crashing, but the passengers ran away form him in fear when they were on the ground, and the distraught Bizarro decided to leave Metropolis. (Action Comics v1 #254)

The alien Xviar planned to charge up Superman's powers until he became a superbomb and destroyed Earth. Toward this purpose he teleported several of Superman's deadliest foes, including Luthor, into the apartment of Clark Kent, Superman's civilian identity. Superman responded, and Xviar teleported the villains across the globe, making Superman chase them. Superman faced Mxyztplk, Luthor, and Parasite in the Rocky Mountains, and defeated them by turning the villains against each other. Parasite got greedy absorbing Superman's energy, and the hero easily turned him against his compatriots, defeating the villains. As Superman approached critical mass he figured out Xviar's scheme, and foiled him by defeating his final adversary, Kryptonite Man, in his non-powered civilian identity. (Superman v1 #299)

Lex went to a movie theatre showing news clips of villains, including his recent escape from prison in a rocket. Joker was also featured in the clips, and was in the audience. Lex and Joker had lunch, and when the police arrived to take them into custody they escaped using Luthor s forcefield device and a rocketpack. As part of Operation Mindbreak Lex was using a beam to target Green Lantern to steal his fearlessness and willpower. Joker wanted in on this, and interfered with the process, as a result he gained Lex s genius and Lex gained Joker s insanity. Luthor went on a mad and pointless crime spree, stealing from banks and giving away the money, and shattering the priceless Gargantua Diamond. Joker enjoyed his sanity but deduced that their swapped mindstates would lead to death from exhaustion in under a day. He constructed a device to undo the swap, and had to fight the insane Lex tooth and nail before the process was reversed. The villains were out cold, and easily apprehended by rookie officer Joe Malone. In jail Lex struggled to remember his glimmer of an idea he had while insane for the Ultimate Theory that would explain the universe. (Joker v1 #7)

In Luthor's next scheme against Superman, the criminal mastermind's goal was to entrap Superman in his own battlesuit, which he modified to possess limited artificial intelligence and new hologram-projection features. After encasing the Man of Steel, Luthor's semi-autonomous battlesuit proceeded to negate any of Superman's attempts to escape or damage it, simultaneously projecting a hologram of Lex around Superman within and modifying Superman's voice to sound like Lex's. Everyone, including Superman's pal Jimmy Olsen, was deceived into thinking that Superman was Lex Luthor for a day, to the Man of Steel's chagrin. Only a ruse perpetrated by Superman with the collusion of Supergirl tricked Luthor into releasing Superman. In spite of his failure to contain and humiliate Superman, Luthor nonetheless obtained the vital information about Superman's physiology that he hoped to acquire, which he went on to use in his next plot to defeat the hero. (Superman v1 #401)

Luthor used a ray capable of altering Superman's perceptions and memories to trick Superman into "relaying" a hallucinatory adventure in which he saved a NASA satellite to his "friend," Clark Kent. When this story was published in the Daily Planet, NASA issued a statement denying the veracity of the story, prompting Morgan Edge to question Superman about whether he gave Clark the bogus story or not. Forced to save the reputation of one of his alter egos and forsake the respectability of the other, Superman told Edge that he relayed no story to Clark Kent, causing Clark to be fired from WGBS and the Daily Planet. Furthermore, although Lex remained unaware that Superman and Clark Kent were really the same person, his plan worked perfectly from his own perspective: To Luthor, Superman fraudulently blamed Clark Kent with making up the satellite story in order to spare his own reputation with the public, and his intent was to wrack Superman's conscience with guilt for condemning his "friend" Clark. (Superman v1 #410)

Fortunately for Clark, he found employment at a sporting goods store owned and run by former WGBS sportscaster Steve Lombard, yet as Superman, he still remained a victim of the condemnation of Lana Lang, who refused to believe Clark was dishonest, and of Lex Luthor's mind-games, among them a hallucination that he killed Luthor and accidentally triggered a bomb that destroyed the Earth. Luthor's final attempt to drive Superman insane focused on using his ray to make Superman perceive that the entire world was vanishing around him, leaving him locked within a blank limbo of his own perception, where only Lex Luthor's mocking jeers existed. Superman managed to break through the illusion by focusing on the super-hearing-detectable sounds of his Daily Planet comrades, who were gathered at a celebration held in Clark Kent's honor many miles away. Before Superman and Luthor could get to trading blows, Luthor was teleported away by Brainiac to help plan a course of action for the impending Crisis. (Superman v1 #413)

Modern Age

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

When he was 13 years old, the death of his parents led to a large insurance payment to him that made him rich. (Lex Luthor: The Unauthorized Biography v1 #1)

Many years ago, a young Lex Luthor had only just come to Metropolis to make his wealth when he got work as an advisor to Bruno Mannheim at his club. Through a door there, he found himself on Apokolips and encountered the New Gods ruled by Darkseid. The lord of Apokolips was intrigued at this human and drafted him to serve as his new scientwister. Over the course of weeks, he was instructed in the ways of Apokolips in order to develop new weapons for his 'master'. Though in reality, Luthor was producing a weapon to kill Darkseid so he could take over the planet. However, his plan failed though Lex was able to escape and returned to Earth by stealing a Father Box. (Action Comics Annual v1 #13)

He would fake his death in a plane crash in the Andes and secretly had his brain transferred into a cloned body. This form was that of a younger and taller person with full hair who was more physically fit. With aid from trusted assistants, the now physically 21-year-old Luthor presented himself to the world as his own hitherto unknown, illegitimate son and heir from Australia named Lex Luthor II. He claimed that he only wished to do good and could not be judged by the actions of his father. (Action Comics v1 #670)

Luthor's clone body eventually begins to deteriorate, causing him to lose his hair and age at an accelerated rate, a side-effect of a disease affecting all clones. Lois Lane discovers proof of Luthor's clone harvesting and false identity and exposes him with help from Superman. (Superman v2 #77)

The demon lord Neron would approach Luthor and offer him full health as well as vitality in exchange for services and his soul. Not believing in the existence of souls, Lex agreed and was restored where he regaied the physical fitness of his Lex II body but lacking head or facial hair whilst physically being approximately in his true age. (Superman: The Man of Tomorrow v1 #3)

Lex Luthor formed an alliance with the Q-Society. He set up their hero Aztek with a new apartment, a safe identity, and unknown to him, hired Dial "V" for Villains to orchestrate a hostage situation at Vanity Wax Nuseum so he could have a high-profile victory. Afterwards Lex told an assistant to hire Hitman to deal with Dial "V," seeing them as a loose end. (Aztek: The Ultimate Man v1 #8) Parasite came to be captured by LexCorp, and asked to work for Lex. Rudy smelled a setup, but Torval was convinced someone finally recognized his combination of power and intellect. He was sent to Metropolis to go on a murderous rampage, ostensibly to draw out Superman. In reality Superman was busy stopping natural disasters caused by the Q Society, and Lex wanted Aztek, who was in the dark about being manipulated, to battle Parasite. Lex wanted Aztek to become tighter with the superhero community, and was leading him by the nose. (Aztek: The Ultimate Man v1 #9)

A lightning strike destroyed a LexCorp storage facility, and Lex was interested to learn that it contained a wrecked container relating to the Bizarro Project. Dr. Sydney Happerson was refining the Bizarro process, but was odds with Luthor before his death, and kept his projects secret. Lex demanded to know exactly what the container once held. His assistant Eliska found the files, the specimen was a clone of LexCorp employee Albert Beezer, and Happerson intended to dissect it, but he got extremely busy when Lex's cancer worsened, so he put the subject in cryogenic storage. Beezer resigned from LexCorp, but Lex decided the Bizarro might seek him out. Beezer did meet his duplicate A. Bizarro, but told him to leave town so Lex couldn't get his hands on him. (A. Bizarro v1 #1) LexCorp's lab found that Al Bizarro's cells, some of which were left behind in his containment unit, could be cultivated, and did not suffer from the same cellular degradation Teng's Bizarro. Lex sent his lackey Tiffany to give Beezer a visit, and after a beating he revealed that Al had contacted him. A Lexcorp copter snagged Al in a net and flew him back to Lex. (A. Bizarro v1 #2) LexCorp scientists kept A. docile in a tank of super-oxygenated liquid, and confirmed that unlike Teng's Bizarro he was not undergoing cellular degradation, and was a viable lifeform. Lex considered making a Bizarro race, and considered his assistants Eliska and Tiffany for the position of mate, but they were horrified at the idea. So was A., who was upset enough to break out of his confinement. Tiffany chased him, and peeved that he rejected her because she was pretty she shot at him. A. found a Mother Box in LexCorp labs, and it created a boom tube that transported him to Apokolips. Lex was furious that the mother box he got from Intergang refused to come to life for his scientists, but a Bizarro got it humming. (A. Bizarro v1 #3) Al became the rock star Al Pokolips, and Lex wanted him and his property seized as being owned by LexCorp. Law enforcement and LexCorp's attorneys agreed with Lex's stance, but Al's new friend, New God Seera, freed him, and they took a boom tube to Central America. They wound up in San Latte, where Lex operated the Lexigente coffee company. Lex had Presidente Kurosawa in his pocket, and reduced the populace to slavery. Clark Kent was also in San Latte, and when Bizarro and a band of guerilla's ousted Lexigente he helped. Lexigente was actually a front for LexCorp to build military armament to be sold to other Central American countries, but Lex had to cut his losses. (A. Bizarro v1 #4)

He later assembled a new incarnation of the Injustice Gang where he formed an alliance with Queen Bee, met with Prometheus and recruited the General. (JLA v1 #36) Together, the team commenced a surprise attack on the Justice League Watchtower in order to catch the heroes unaware. (JLA v1 #37) Unknown to Luthor, he had fallen under the control of the Mageddon with an aspect of it taking him as a host body and using him to weaken Earth for its impending destruction. Luthor was powerless as he became encased in a giant eye and rooted to his seat when the Justice League encountered him. The heroes managed to goad Lex into being angry at the thought of being under the control of someone else allowing him to free himself from this shard of the weapon of the Old Gods. (JLA v1 #38)

U.S. President Luthor in Superman: Lex 2000 v1 #1.

Deciding to turn to politics, Luthor becomes President of the United States, winning the election on a platform of promoting technological progress. His first action as president is to take a proposed moratorium on fossil-based fuels to the U.S. Congress. On the night of the election, Batman threatens that Luthor can keep the kryptonite ring or the White House but not both. Later on, Superman, Batman and Lois Lane seemingly try to steal the ring only to be thwarted. In actuality, they manipulated Luthor into retrieving a fake while Batman keeps the actual ring. Superman, upon learning that Lex Luthor was about to be elected President, flew off in a fit of rage and split one of Saturn's small moons in half with one fly through. (Superman: Lex 2000 v1 #1) With him being President, Luthor sought someone to manage his company as he assumed the position of leader of the country. To achieve that end, he decided to choose Talia al Ghul for the position who during this time had been hiding from her father under the alias of Talia Head in Hong Kong. President Luthor approached her with the offer and that he would give her protection from Ra's al Ghul but Talia refused as she stated he wanted to be left alone. At night, assassins came upon her seemingly from her father with Talia managing to escape with the aid of Luthor's bodyguards who took her to meet with Lex in Metropolis where she ultimately accepted the position of CEO of LexCorp. (President Luthor Secret Files and Origins v1 #1) During his first presidential press conference, President Luthor announced his candidates for his administration that included General Frank Rock as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Amanda Waller as Secretary of Meta-Human Affairs, Major Sam Lane as Secretary of Defense, Jefferson Pierce as Secretary of Education and Catherine Grant as White Press Secretary. (Superman v2 #166)

Chemo, Shrapnel and Plasmus were released from Stryker's Island to be drafted into President Luthor's Suicide Squad, with Manchester Black leading the team, and they required a field test against a powerful superhuman. Black suggested Superman, and Luthor supported the choice. The Squad lured superman to Area 8, an abandoned military compound, and engaged him in combat. They were defeated by Superman, with Chemo being hurled into Earth's orbit. Luthor agreed with Black that they needed to recruit Mongul and free Doomsday to complete the Squad. Superman confronted Lex in one of his bunkers and Lex told him extreme measures were necessary during the Imperiex War. (Adventures of Superman v1 #593) Brainiac sent Lena Luthor to President Luthor and told him his role in the Imperiex War could make history remember him as on of America's greatest leaders, although many would die. (Superman v2 #171) Luthor later met with Darkseid, who arrived in Metropolis to fight against Imperiex. Superman and the JLA were present because they distrusted Darkseid, but Luthor assured them Darkseid was an ally. Luthor told the JLA they'd be instrumental in the battle against Darkseid, and sent Superman to Berlin, which was being invaded by General Zod. (Action Comics v1 #780) Luthor's cabinet informed the President that several Imperiex Probes landed on Earth to hollow out the planet. Luthor organized a number of superheroes, including the Titans and Outsiders, to combat the Probes. (JLA: Our Worlds at War v1 #1) President Luthor ordered Superman to go to the JLA Watchtower because the Suicide Squad had freed Doomsday, but Luthor had lost all contact with the team. On the Watchtower Superman found a decimated Suicide Squad and teamed with Doomsday, whose mind had been manipulated by Manchester Black, to destroy a number of Imperiex probes in space. Imperiex Prime disintegrated Doomsday and hit Superman with an energy blast. (Adventures of Superman v1 #594) Afterwards, he gave the JSA a mission to disrupt Imperiex s link to his ship s power supply, hopefully turning the tide of the Imperiex War. Luthor was astonished when the JSA not only cut off Imperiex from his power, but they managed to blow up his ship as well. (JSA: Our Worlds at War v1 #1)

Luthor declared a state of emergency after several disasters around the world. He demanded that his staff find the JLA, who had been missing for a month, not aware that they were trapped in Atlantis in the year 1,000 B.C. (JLA v1 #69) Atlantean sorceress Gamemnae was siphoning Earth's water to Atlantis, causing a worldwide drought. The JLA confronted her, but she defeated them. President Luthor authorized several muon bombs to be dropped on Atlantis, assuming the JLA could escape in the 10 seconds he gave as a warning. They did avoid the bombs, but Gamemnae was also unaffected. (JLA v1 #73) President Luthor attended the JLA s press conference announcing their new members, and he accused them of choosing minorities to fill a quota. (JLA v1 #80) The Burning, who needed chaos and fear to reproduce, assaulted President Luthor with a wave of guilt, leaving him catatonic. Pete Ross and Amanda Waller contacted the JLA, and Martian Manhunter was able to repair Luthor s mind. (JLA v1 #84)

It was discovered that a massive mass of Kryptonite was heading towards Earth which was designated as Asteroid X. The asteroid was believed to had been attracted by the presence of Superman with it being on a collision course for Earth. This led to President Luthor placing a bounty for the capture of Superman and also dispatched Captain Atom heading a task force of Metahumans with the goal of apprehending the Man of Steel. (Superman/Batman v1 #4) The White House was later infiltrated by Superman and Batman's respective allies with Luthor managing to defeat them but he was overwhelmed by the Man of Steel himself. As a result, an angry Luthor injected Kryptonite into his body and put on his power-suit as he sought to kill Superman personally. (Superman/Batman v1 #5) He then confronted and battled the Man of Steel through the use of his warsuit where he was defeated. By this point, his former ally Talia Head who served as C.E.O. of LexCorps began to drain all the company's resources and sell its assets leaving Luthor with nothing. It was revealed that the Kryptonite meteor was deliberately being allowed to hit Earth by Luthor but it was stopped by Superman and Batman. This chain of events led to the end of the Luthor Presidency but Lex managed to survive where he promised a reckoning and a coming crisis. (Superman/Batman v1 #6) In hiding, he hired the Calculator under the guise of Mr. X where he tasked him with keeping an eye on the newly arrived Supergirl and monitoring her actions on Earth. (Supergirl v5 #0)

Despite the criminal charges made against him, he was acquitted by the courts allowing for his release where he stated that he wanted to regain his company. However, his ruined reputation led to the LexCorp board of directors seeking to buy him out with Luthor looking at a means of bettering his public image. (Superman v1 #650) He operated in the shadows to gather large stashes of Kryptonite with the assistance of other supervillains whilst making use of the Sunstone for his plans. This led to him calling upon the favour owed to him by the Flea Circus to free the Kryptonite Man from Stryker's Island prison. (Action Comics v1 #651) With the power of the Kryptonite, he awakened a Kryptonian battleship called the Doomsday that had been constructed from Sunstone. Luthor attempted to use its power to devastate Metropolis in retribution for it having casted him out with Superman destroying the Kryptonian technology Lex was using to empower himself. (Superman v1 #653)

The sealed chamber came to be broken into by the Black Lanterns with Luthor preparing to make his final stand as he readied his armours weapon systems. At that moment, an orange Power Ring arrived that inducted him into the Orange Lantern Corps. (Blackest Night v1 #6)

From that encounter, he learnt that the orange Power Ring had shown him his greatest desire which was to be a superhero greater than Superman. Thus, he felt a deep sense of loss without the Power Ring and started a quest to find them in the world along with a search for the black Power Rings. He believed that finding them and reverse engineering the devices for himself could lead to his path to become a god with him dedicating LexCorp's efforts to finding any traces of the ring. To keep himself focused, he constructed a sophisticated robot in the guise of Lois Lane that was made from Brainiac and Kryptonian technology to assist him. During this time, he was captured by a group of kidnappers that were under the control of Mister Mind who sought to use Luthor for his own goals. (Action Comics v1 #890) He was kept within a dream-like state whilst Mind probed his mind though Luthor managed to get control of the fantasy reality and battled the worm. Mind had invested his entirety into the mental battle whilst Lex managed to use some limited control over his motor reflexes to kick his foes physical body on the rooftop thus defeating him. (Action Comics v1 #891) He later journeyed to the Ross Ice Shelf in the Antarctica to follow the energy signature of black ring energy with him hiring Deathstroke as his bodyguard. The anomaly affected the consciousness of those around it making them violent turning Deathstroke along with the mercenary crew unstable whereupon they attacked one another until a scan of the ring energy caused it to alter itself into a more harmless form. (Action Comics v1 #892) Luthor later discovered that another source of black ring energy was located in Uganda at a secret base operated by Gorilla Grodd. Through a carefully orchestrated plan, he was able to trick Grodd with an android copy allowing himself to sneak into the base and get the scan of the anomaly. During his attempted escape, he was shot by Grodd causing Luthor to fall off the helicopter and suffer a fatal fall leading to an encounter with Death. (Action Comics v1 #893) During this moment, he spoke to Death believing he was consigned to an afterlife but was told that this was simply a preliminary check before he woke injured in a helicopter after being recovered by his men. (Action Comics v1 #894) He later determined that the secret of the black ring energy was to change all the ten spheres that had appeared on Earth with this bringing him into conflict with Vandal Savage. (Action Comics v1 #895) Luthor had later involved Scandal Savage and the Secret Six in an effort at stopping her father. (Action Comics v1 #896) Afterwards, he went to Gotham City to meet the captive Joker who had within his possession one of the black spheres that he was hiding that could fit in his hands that Luthor managed to alter. (Action Comics v1 #897) He later on discovered the presence of another black sphere that had fallen in possession of Larfleeze with the Orange Lantern demanding Luthor unleash its power for him. Lex managed to trick Agent Orange into one of his white spheres thus defeating him and gaining possession of the black sphere that was in Larfleeze's possession. (Action Comics v1 #898) During his quest, he was confronted by Brainiac who had revealed that he had taken control of his Lois Lane robot though Luthor in turn revealed that he had become aware of the infiltration and arranged for countermeasures to defeat the Coluan who was forced to retreat. It was then that the black spheres were activated leading to them to open a doorway into the Phantom Zone from which an entity emerged that sought to end all negative emotions in the universe as these hurt it. Lex destroyed the Lois Lane robot to use the Kryptonian technology in her to manipulate the Phantom Zone energy and use it to merge with the entity to attain god-like power. (Action Comics v1 #899) With the power of the Zone Child, he confronted Superman with the intention of destroying Superman but was unable to use its abilities to harm him. Due to his hatred for Superman, he was forced to abandon the powers where he lost any of the knowledge he gained during this time. (Action Comics v1 #900)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

The New 52

When he was young, he was out playing with his dog when he fell into a well and hurt his leg where he managed to call to his father. However, his father was only disappointed in Lex and told him to carry himself out of the well as only the strong prospered. (Justice League: The Darkseid War: Lex Luthor v1 #1)

Deciding to take his genius to Metropolis, Luthor arrived at the City of Tomorrow where he said he was full of hope, heart and plans. His faith his humanity was on the edge but he remained an idealist. Upon arriving, he felt the need to prove something and wanted to help the world. During this time, he came to notice a pattern of criminal behaviour with the police not being able to solve it. Deciding to investigate it himself, he through scientific surveillance learnt that a criminal duo were responsible for the abduction of hundreds of people from the streets. Infiltrating one such abduction, he confronted the criminals who were Dr. Pharm and his brother Graft that were demented scientists experimenting on people. Luthor came to shut down their operations but they managed to escape where they remained enemies of Lex who operated from the shadows in Metropolis. The incident convinced Lex that what Metropolis needed was a hero and thought that he would be such a figure. (Superman v6 #4)

Unknown to the U.S. military, Lex Luthor has been in contact with the Collector of Worlds and makes a deal with the alien, who wishes to collect specimens from Earth for his collection of inhabitants and artifacts from different planets. Luthor intends to increases his power in Metropolis and to aid this he also supplies social justice blogger and journalist Clark Kent with information regarding the corrupt activities of powerful media mogul Glen Glennmorgan of Galaxy Inc. Clark is unaware his informant is Luthor, knowing him only as 'Icarus'. (Action Comics v2 #8)

Superman, Batman, Martian Manhunter and Wonder Woman would later fight against a team-up of Lex Luthor and Metallo. Diana defeated Metallo, unbeknownst to Lex, allowing Martian Manhunter to assume his shape. Superman then pretended to be affected by 'Metallo's' Kryptonite. Seeing victory ahead, Lex took a moment to gloat; unbeknownst to him, Manhunter's faux-Kryptonite was a recording device, and his admission of attempted murder was enough evidence to send him to prison. (Superman: Son of Kal-El 2021 Annual v1 #1)

While in prison, Lex was visited by Pandora, a mysterious woman who believed he could open her box with the darkness of his heart, but a group of heroes led by Wonder Woman broke into his cell in an attempt to seize the box. (Justice League of America v3 #7) Soon after, Luthor was released from prison and returned to his position as the CEO of LexCorp, just in time to witness the Crime Syndicate arrive and announce that criminals were free to walk the Earth. (Action Comics v2 #23.3)

When finally preparing to fight the Syndicate, a new enemy - Mazahs, Lex's Earth 3 analogue - attacked Luthor and his allies. However, Mazahs' power was no match for Lex's superior intellect, and Lex defeated and killed his counterpart in battle. In the aftermath, after the Crime Syndicate had been dethroned and the Justice League had been restored from the Firestorm Matrix where they had been trapped, Luthor and the rest of the Injustice League were regarded as heroes and celebrated for their courageous efforts. (Forever Evil v1 #7)

In the aftermath, Lex came to reason that a greater danger was coming to Earth that was posed by the threat that destroyed Earth-3. Thus, he reasoned that there needed to be a response towards that danger and he decided that it could be best achieved by him operating on the Justice League. As such, he re-built the Watchtower in orbit and made overtures to get him installed as one of the newest members of the Justice League. (Justice League v2 #30)

After opening up LexCorp for an open house on his company, Luthor was attacked by an assassin named Neutron. Though Luthor and the Justice League repelled Neutron, the assassin accidentally released LexCorp's secret project - the Amazo Virus - that turned all of Metropolis into a quarantine zone. (Justice League v2 #35) Luthor and the League worked together to contain the virus and heal all the infected. (Justice League v2 #39)

With an army of Parademons, he arrived on Earth to confront the Anti-Monitor Mobius. (Justice League v2 #48) As such, he worked with the heroes of the planet in combating the cosmic being. (Justice League v2 #49) However, Superwoman's child was born who was the son of Alexander Luthor of Earth-3 and inherited his power to take the abilities of others. Thus, with the child, she was able to depower Lex Luthor whose status as god of Apokolips was taken and the Omega Effect was absorbed by the baby. The Justice League managed to unite then to stop the threat posed by Grail who had used the Anti-Life Equation to control her father Darkseid for use against the heroes. In the aftermath, Luthor returned to Apokolips were he was cheered by the Forgotten as their saviour and provided a suit of armor along with a Mother Box to help guide them to their new future. (Justice League v2 #50)

Rebirth

In time, Luthor came to grow bored with his rule of Apokolips. He later decided to return Earth after learning of the recent death of Superman. This combined with recent events inspired him to become a hero for Metropolis in the hope that his sister Lena would be proud of him when she awoke from her coma. In that time, he visited the Daily Planet where Perry White had been given custody of Superman's cape with him hanging it there in memory of the fallen Man of Steel. Lex came to buy the Daily Planet and forced Perry to hand over the cape which he incorporated into his own costume. (Justice League v2 #52)

Luthor was among the various individuals brought together by Brainiac to combat the threat of the Omega Titans after the tear was made in the Source Wall following the Dark Multiverse crisis. He was assigned to one of the teams designed to stop one of the cosmic beings from consuming the planet Colu. Despite their efforts, they failed and the planet was destroyed with the Coluans forced to evacuate their world. The Omega Titans were ultimately tricked into consuming one of their own leading to them returning to their eon long slumber but this marked the rise of new threats for the universe. As a result, Luthor departed and decided that the Justice League was incapable of combating these dangers and that he would seek his own way in protecting the Earth. (Justice League: No Justice v1 #3) Afterwards, he sought answers and came to determine that his efforts at being a hero were for nought and that he should not deny his true nature. This led to him breaking apart the Mother Box in his possession to acquire its power source as fuel for a time machine to go into the distant future where he saw that the universe had attained perfection a million years from now where everyone attained powers and had conquered the universe. These denizens claimed that Luthor had been responsible for finding the secret and they named their home Lexor City in his honor but did not tell him the clue except stating that it involved the symbol of doom. This led to Lex returning to his time to uncover the secret where he gathered like-minded allies where he offered them ultimate power to bring the paradise of the future to the modern age. (Justice League v4 #5) He later arrived on the Moon to seemingly murder Vandal Savage and claim his knowledge about the upcoming energy that escaped from the Source Wall. (Justice League v4 #1) As part of his plan, he began to assemble the Legion of Doom where he promised each of its members their hearts desire if they worked alongside him. (Justice League v4 #2)

His forces overwhelmed the heroes and he managed to easily defeat the Justice League members one-on-one with his powers. However, the Trinity managed to work together in striking him at a moment when he was distracted. Sensing Luthor's defeat, Perpetua arrived at the scene and looked to undo the heroes efforts at forming a justice symbol to save the world. During this time, Shayne who was the son of the Martian Manhunter and Hawkgirl from a reality created by the World Forger used his powers to delve into Lex's mind. Once inside, he reconnected with his father and switched places with him thus allowing the Martian Manhunter to be reborn with him no longer trapped within Luthor's body. (Justice League v4 #38)

He went to Perpetua's side as she dispatched him to recruit the Crime Syndicate of Earth-3. Afterwards, Luthor was sent to deal with the threat of the Batman Who Laughs. Lex was surprised to find that his foe had infected six superheroes to be his servants who were sent against Luthor. (Justice League: Hell Arisen v1 #1) Despite their numbers, he managed to use his new abilities and his intelligence to defeat them where he took blood samples from them before fleeing. He then looked to undo the infection but required blood samples of the heroes before they were transformed. Thus, he infiltrated the Hall of Justice in order to gather the samples but came to learnt that all the heroes there had been infected by the Batman Who Laughs. (Justice League: Hell Arisen v1 #2) Luthor gathered allies in order to fight the Batman Who Laughs where he used a serum that stripped the infection from those affected by him. With the Batman Who Laughs as his prisoner, he was transported back to Perpetua where he showed his captive to her. The Batman Who Laughs, however, convinced the cosmic being that he was a better partner than Luthor and revealed that the vision of a perfect future ruled by him was a fiction planted in his mind by Perpetua. Lex then defied Perpetua and attempted to kill his prisoner but was stripped of his powers by the cosmic being who turned him back to his human state. She then banished him back to Earth with Lex believing that they were all doomed now. (Justice League: Hell Arisen v1 #4)

After the creation of Batman Incorporated, Luthor looked to replicate the actions of Bruce Wayne. This saw him instituting a hidden program designed to train his own vigilantes that would be placed in a city to fight crime in the most violent places on the planet. Among these initiatives took place in Badhnisia that resulted in the creation of a vigilante named Abyss. When Bruce Wayne lost his fortune, Lex made efforts in trying to take over Batman Inc. but his plan failed leading to the exposure of his hidden vigilante program. (Batman v3 #121) The exposure of the experiment led to Luthor scuttling it but many of the products of the program remained out in the world. (Batman 2022 Annual v3 #1)

The incident with Perpetua led to Luthor concluding that the world needed Superman. However, Lex believed that Earth needed its protector to be above them and that the publics knowledge of Superman's secret identity needed to be rectified. Luthor first enlisted the aid of Manchester Black to serve as a spy on Superman's newly formed team known as the Authority who went to liberate Warworld from the tyrant Mongul. Black though came to believe in Superman's cause and looked to turn his back on Luthor. In response, Lex had Manchester Black captured with scientists making the psychic the core component of Project: Blackout. This looked to psychically remove Superman's secret identity from everyone around the world except for a few select people with the process being said to had killed Manchester Black. In addition, anyone trying to restore the lost memory would die from the psychic barrier placed on their minds. Superman came to confront Luthor who wanted the Man of Steel to join him as LexCorp's corporate supported superhero but Kal-El refused and battled Lex for the death of Manchester Black. (Action Comics v1 #1050)

It served as a meeting place within his mind from where he could consult with others and download or upload data to and from his brain. Notes

  • Lex Luthor was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster where he made his first appearance in Action Comics v1 #23 (April, 1940).
  • In Superman v1 #13 (1941), he took an identity called the Light where he was a masked robed figure that could generate a hypnosis beam where he began to brainwash people and attempted to have Superman destroy military material as well as detonate a bomb until he was unmasked and caught by the Man of Steel.
  • In Action Comics v1 #42 (1941), he masked his identity under the guise of Zytal where he claimed to be an interplanetary voyager from another universe who stated that thousands of years ago he had accumulated all the knowledge of his old world. This identity claimed that he departed his homeworld on a flying city known as the Empire City of the Sky in order to set out to explore the universes and sought out a planet's most superior minds to join him in this exploration of infinity. He brought the city to Earth near Metropolis where he abducted numerous key figures in the city asking them to join him but this was an elaborate plan for Luthor to gain their private business secrets to enrich himself with Superman uncovering the elaborate plot.
  • In Superman v1 #168 (1964), in an attempt to return to Earth from Lexor he accidently crashed in 1906 where he took the identity of Cyrus Groat who had come to America to find a new job and in this guise he became an editor to the Daily Planet as he was trapped in this era.
  • In Superboy v1 #115 (1964), Luthor pretended to be a Kryptonian criminal named Dak-El who claimed to had conducted forbidden experiments that imprisoned people in a sort of 'stone zone' where they became trapped in blocks of stone but he was unable to free them afterwards. This led to his banishment to the Phantom Zone where he claimed that he broke free after a volcano eruption on Earth.
  • In Superman v1 #168 (1964), Luthor came upon another world inhabited by a people had lost their ancient knowledge with Lex uncovering its ancient secrets thus revitalising it. The inhabitants renamed their world as Lexor in his honour and when Superman came upon the planet Luthor used the advanced science to give himself super-powers with him adopting a masked superhero identity known as the Defender.
  • In Superman v1 #170 (1964), he travelled through time to a point before Krypton's destruction where he portrayed himself to the Kryptonians as a hero called Luthor the Noble.
  • In Superboy v1 #166 (1970), he operated as the Kryptonite Conqueror where he led the Kryptonite Gang that wore Kryptonite suits in a plot to eliminate Superboy.
  • In Superboy v1 #177 (1971), he masqueraded as Cerebron who was a bald long eared telepath that targeted Superboy.
  • In DC Special Series v1 #26 (1981), he masqueraded as a red-armored being named Dominus who constructed an elaborate trap to eliminate Superman. The name was later used in the creation of a new character in the Post-Crisis continuity.
  • In Superman Family v1 #182 (1977), whilst in prison, Luthor maintained his network of spies with his agents reporting back to him and he had the code name of Command L.
  • In Adventure Comics v1 #355 (1967), a future descendant of Lex Luthor was shown to reside in the 30th century where he attempted to do good by operating as a hero who could adopt the powers of two other super-heroes. Alongside Mr. Mxyzptlk’s brother, they aided the future adult versions of the Legion of Super-Heroes against their foes the Legion of Super-Villains after they were briefly defeated by their enemies. This led to Luthor and Mxyzptlk being admitted as members of the Legion of Super-Heroes.
  • As noted noted on the Daily Beast, John Byrne based the Post-Crisis version of Lex Luthor on Donald Trump.
  • Marv Wolfman in an interview noted on the Post-Crisis version of the character, "I never believed the original Luthor. Every story would begin with him breaking out of prison, finding some giant robot in an old lab he hid somewhere, and then he'd be defeated. My view was if he could afford all those labs and giant robots he wouldn't need to rob banks. I also thought later that Luthor should not have super powers. Every other villain had super powers. Luthor's power was his mind. He needed to be smarter than Superman. Superman's powers had to be useless against him because they couldn't physically fight each other and Superman was simply not as smart as Luthor."
  • In Hero Illustrated v1 #18 (1994), Neil Gaiman noted in an interview that, "It's a pity Lex Luthor has become a multinationalist; I liked him better as a bald scientist. He was in prison, but they couldn't put his mind in prison. Now he's just a skinny Kingpin."
  • Writer Mark Waid in the trade back of Superman: Birthright wrote, "Despite my own personal prejudices, I say we leave Lex the criminal businessman he's been for the past 17 years. The Lois & Clark producers liked it, the WB cartoon guys liked it ... so clearly, it works on some level. My concern is that, at least in my eyes, the fact that Luthor's allowed to operate uncontested for years makes Superman look ineffectual."
  • On IGN, the character was ranked 4th on the list of the Top 100 Comic Book Villains of All Time.
