Biography

Origin

Henry Allen

He had been the local doctor of Fallville for the last thirty years. Dr. Allen and his wife had known that their son Barry used to sleep walk as a child. They were also there to witness him having a girlfriend when he was a child with this being Daphne Dean. (The Flash v1 #126)

He later visited his son at Utopia Towers where Barry Allen came to reveal that he was the superhero called the Flash. (The Flash v1 #302)

The motorist Jack Morgan was able to revive him but unknown to anyone Henry Allen's astral form came to leave his physical body. Whilst leaving his body, his form came to be possessed by astral essence of the Top. In this guise, Allen came to pose as the doctor for several weeks with the ultimate goal of switching bodies with his son who was secretly the Flash. Barry Allen came to fake his death causing the Top to leave his body but with no new host body present it meant that Henry Allen's own astral essence could return to his own form. Post-Crisis

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different version of events. Around 17 years ago, his pregnant wife was ready to give birth where they met with Dr. Gilmore. He came to deliver twins though one was believed to had been born stillborn leaving the Allen's with only a single child who they came to name Barry Allen. (The Flash v2 #144)

When Barry was young, his mother was murdered with Henry arrested as it was believed he was responsible for his wife's death despite his protests of innocence. This led to his son Barry seeking to find a way of finding his mothers killer and he eventually became a forensic scientist. However, he was unable to find the culprit with his father eventually dying in prison. Despite his death, Barry sought clues for the murder in order to finally vindicate his deceased father and prove his innocence. (The Flash: Rebirth v1 #2)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new timeline was created that led to a different version of events and history.

After a secret visit from Professor Zoom at Iron Heights, Henry Allen conspired with a number of in-mates to escape the prison and managed to do so leading to him becoming a fugitive on the run. (Flash v4 #41)

He later made brunch on the weekend for his son, Iris West and Wally West II. During that time, he told his son that he should reveal his secret of being the Flash to Iris and Wally. (The Flash v5 #18)

As a blood specialist, he had to study medicine to get his degree and was knowledgeable on biology. (The Flash v5 #18)

  • Henry Allen was created by John Broome and Carmine Infantino where he made his first appearance in Flash v1 #126 (February, 1962).

In other media

Television

  • In The Flash series, the character appeared in the setting of the 1990 live-action television series in the pilot episode where he was portrayed by actor M. Emmet Walsh. He was shown as being the husband of Nora Allen and father of two sons named Jay Allen and Barry Allen.
  • In The Flash series, the character appeared in the setting of the 2014 live-action television series set in the Arrowverse where he was portrayed by actor John Wesley Shipp. He was a doctor married to Nora Allen with the pair having a son named Barry Allen. When Barry was a boy, a mysterious flash of lightning surrounded Henry's wife and killed Nora Allen. In the aftermath, it was believed by the police that Henry Allen had killed Nora and he was sent to prison despite his pleas of innocence. In season 2, it was shown that Eobard Thawne in his guise as Harrison Wells left a confession video that stated that he had killed Nora Allen with Henry Allen being innocent. As a result, Henry Allen was released from prison but he wanted some time away in order to make sense of his life. In an effort to get Barry to embrace his inner darkness, Zoom killed Henry Allen in front of his son. In the season 2 finale, it was revealed that on Earth-3 that there was a counterpart of Henry Allen named Jay Garrick who became a superhero speedster on his world. Jay Garrick was captured by Zoom of Earth-2 and kept in an iron mask that dampened his powers until he was freed by the Flash Barry Allen.
