History

The Heroes for Hire was a business that was founded by Luke Cage and Danny Rand. The two then came to form Heroes for Hire, Inc., founded by attorney Jeryn Hogarth and staffed by administrative wunderkind Jennie Royce. The organization known as Heroes for Hire operated as a commercial enterprise that provided specialized security and investigative services for a fee. During their initial engagement, the group was contracted to protect a research scientist and his invention from a criminal extortion plot. Luke Cage and Iron Fist utilized their combined physical skills to intercept a group of armed mercenaries who had infiltrated a high-rise building to steal technological blueprints. Luke Cage used his superhuman strength and impenetrable skin to act as a physical vanguard, drawing enemy fire and dismantling structural obstacles with his bare hands. Simultaneously, Iron Fist employed advanced martial arts and the ability to channel his spiritual energy into a glowing fist, delivering concussive strikes that shattered reinforced steel and neutralized armored opponents. The duo coordinated their movements to clear the facility of hostiles, eventually cornering the lead operative and reclaiming the stolen data. After ensuring the safety of the client and the containment of the threats, the group submitted an invoice for their services, formalizing the transaction as a business-based intervention. The operation concluded with the successful preservation of the asset and the establishment of a professional precedent for their future contractual work. (Power Man and Iron Fist v1 #54)

The pair first met at a party held by Jeryn celebrating Luke Cage's exoneration of all charges they were attacked by Stiletto and Discus teaming up to take them down. (Power Man and Iron Fist v1 #50)

Cleared of criminal charges, they briefly worked for Misty Knight's detective agency Nightwing Restorations but soon elected to become a two-man team named the 'Heroes for Hire'. Although the streetwise Cage and the unworldly Iron Fist seemed to have little in common, they soon became the best of friends. (Power Man and Iron Fist v1 #53)

Danny visited Joy Meachum and relinquished control of his share of Rand-Meachum Inc. to her until such a time that he believed he's earned the wealth from the company. Their first official mission as a team was against the Incinerator who tried to rob Manhattan National Bank. They took him down easily using the sprinkler system, then Cage just knocked him out. (Power Man and Iron Fist v1 #54) They next attended a local car show to advertise the business, which Cage found boring until it was attacked by the Bull and his thugs. Their mission was to steal the Fantasti-Car which was on display at the show. The duo took out the thugs with little effort. (Power Man and Iron Fist v1 #55)

Luke and Danny came to re-form the Heroes for Hire when Daredevil had become the leader of the Hand and taken over Hell's Kitchen by establishing Shadowland. (Shadowland: Power Man v1 #2)

When it was inactive, Deadpool looked to appropriate the name for the use in his own team after being inspired when Solo masqueraded as him. This angered Luke Cage into getting the name back, thanks to a cease and desist letter proclaiming rights usage. (Deadpool v6 #1)

Overview

In appearance, the Heroes for Hire were a small, partnership-based commercial agency that functioned as a professional for-hire security and investigation firm. The group operated with a pragmatic and business-like formality, maintaining a storefront office in New York City where they accepted clients and negotiated legal contracts for their services. Their primary goals and objectives were centered on providing protection, retrieving stolen property, and resolving criminal threats in exchange for monetary compensation, effectively bridging the gap between private investigation and superheroics. They acted as a service-oriented duo, dedicated to fulfilling the specific terms of their employment while ensuring the safety of their paying customers and the integrity of the law. Regarding their clothing and costumes, the members wore distinct, individualized attire that combined street-level practicality with recognizable superhero motifs. Luke Cage wore a functional ensemble consisting of a yellow, open-collared shirt made of durable fabric, dark trousers, and a metal chain link belt, often supplemented by silver wrist bands and a headband. Iron Fist wore a traditional, form-fitting green martial arts uniform with a high collar and a large black dragon emblem emblazoned on the chest, paired with a yellow mask that covered his eyes and a matching sash. Their clothing was designed to facilitate high-impact physical combat and mobility, reflecting their status as elite combatants operating within a civilian and urban environment. Initially, Heroes for Hire, Inc. was a small business licensed by the state of New York that offered a full line of professional investigation and protection services

The personnel of the Heroes for Hire demonstrated a combination of extreme physical durability, superhuman strength, and mastery of esoteric martial arts during their initial contractual engagement. One member possessed a physiological condition that rendered his skin as hard as titanium and his muscle tissue significantly denser than that of a normal human, allowing him to withstand high-caliber gunfire, explosions, and bladed weapons without sustaining injury. This individual utilized his physical power to lift heavy machinery and exert enough force to break through reinforced concrete and steel barriers. Another operative displayed peak human athleticism and precision, utilizing his spiritual energy, or chi, to augment his physical capabilities. By focusing this energy into his hand, he could manifest a glowing fist with the density and striking power of solid iron, enabling him to shatter indestructible materials and incapacitate superhumanly durable opponents. This member also exhibited advanced proficiency in various forms of hand-to-hand combat, including grappling, pressure point strikes, and acrobatic evasion. Together, these skills allowed the group to operate as a comprehensive tactical unit capable of neutralizing armed paramilitary squads and bypassing sophisticated mechanical security systems through a blend of raw physical power and disciplined technical combat.
