Hickory

Hickory was one of the rabbits living in the Warren of the Shining Wire. After Hazel, Fiver, Bigwig and Holly paid the warren a visit and left with Strawberry, Hickory began to consider leaving as well, disliking Cowslip's Chieftainship. He conspired with his mate, Marigold, to escape and seek help from Hazel. Hazel was happy to oblige, and had Hawkbit and Dandelion teach Hickory and Marigold to survive on their own in the wilderness (as they had spent their entire lives in the Warren of the Shining Wire). Initially the training did not go very well, and Hickory's attempt to show his courage by playing chicken with a speeding truck almost got him killed.

Eventually though, he and Marigold were able to return to Cowslip's warren and recruit a number of their friends, including Hickory's best friend Flax, much to Cowslip's disapproval. They all moved into the abandoned Redstone, and for a time they were quite content, Hickory being the Chief of the warren. All that changed when two strange rabbits named Weedstalk and Chafe arrived, saving Redstone by killing a marauding weasel. Weedstalk quickly began to worm his way into Hickory's favor, convincing Hickory that he was too nice to be the Chief Rabbit and even turning him against Marigold. Ultimately, Hickory appointed Weedstalk the new Chief, which caused Marigold to run away and seemingly get run down by a car.

Even as Hickory and Flax discussed getting rid of Weedstalk and Chafe, Weedstalk (actually Woundwort) had heard about Cowslip's mystic, Silverweed, and traded the lives of the Redstone rabbits for him, by not telling them that a human construction crew planned to bulldoze the warren. Thankfully, Marigold had survived and returned with Hazel and his friends, who were able to get Hickory, Flax, and the rest of the Redstone rabbits out safely, and they all moved to Watership Down permenantly.
