Honeythorn Gump
Honeythorn Gump, also known as simply "The Gump," was the self-appointed elven protector of the world's last two unicorns. When the goblin minions of the Lord of Darkness slew the stallion, Gump and his band, which consisted of Screwball, Brown Tom and Oona, took it upon themselves to guard the mare with their lives. Gump recruited Jack into service, because Jack was (as far as Gump knew) the only mortal to survive the sudden onset of winter brought on by the stallion's slaying.
First Gump made Jack pass a test to prove his worthiness, in which he made the young mortal answer a riddle: "What is a bell that does not ring, yet its knell makes the angels sing?" Although initially furious when Jack got the correct answer, bluebells, Gump afterward warmed to Jack. Leaving Brown Tom to protect the mare, he, Screwball and Oona took Jack to a hidden treasure cave where Jack was provided with a suit of armor and weapons, and shown how to use them.
When the goblins Blix and Pox overpowered Brown Tom and captured the mare in the meantime, Gump and the others accompanied Jack on his quest to the Great Tree to rescue the unicorn and defeat the Lord of Darkness. After Darkness' defeat at Jack's hands, Gump took the severed horn of the stallion and reattached it to the corpse, bringing the dead unicorn back to life and restoring nature's balance.
