History

The origins of the Infinites are not known except they entered into the Milky Way galaxy during the Avengers storyline where they began a process of altering panets where they created a ring the size of a planetary orbit and clamped the very star in orbit of the planet. Their goal was simple, to create an enery web that would instantly connect all the stars in the Milky Way. After which, the Infinite would move the entire structure to a new location that would be a billion light years away which would result in the death of all life forms of the galaxy.

After an encounter in the Dimension of Manifestations, a realm where cosmic beings interacted, the Infintes appeared before Eternity as shadowy giants and claimed to be greater than any single reality and confronted Eternity where they demanded an account for his defiance. Eternity claimed that they were playing with the substance of his realm but the Infinites claimed that they sought to improve the flow of the galaxies energies by rearranging them. Seven heroes from the galaxy were given the chance by Eternity to petition why this should not be done at which point it was discovered that the Infinites were not manevolent but rather ignorant of life on planets which they saw as pinpricks. Once they discovered this shocking truth, the Infinites abandoned their plan and one of their kind sacrificed their life to restore the destroyed worlds.

Servitors were dispatched to a Rigellian colony where they exterminated the population to create more of their number. The world's distress signal was received by various heroes of Earth that belonged to the Avengers who responded to the message. This led to their first encounter with the creations of the Infinites with their attempts at defeating the Servitors failing as they simply created more of their number. Ultimately, the world was destroyed by the Servitors with the surviving Avengers learning of the true nature of the threat they faced which was when one of the titanic Infinites manifested before their vessel (Avengers: Infinity v1 #2)

Overview

Chief among their creations were artificial beings known as the Servitors that were humanoid automatons that could interact with people on the lower planes. These machines were mindless drones that swarmed worlds and broke down everything they encountered leading to them creating more of their kind in the process. This could see them burrowing deep into planets right through the bedrock until they released the fiery primal core causing the world to explode. Thus, the Servitors were destroyed in the process but achieved their programming allowing for the Infinites to reshape a world according to their designs. (Avengers: Infinity v1 #2)

Notes

  • The Infinites were created by Roger Stern, Kurt Busiek, Sean Chen, and Carlos Pacheco where they made their first appearance in Avengers: Infinity v1 #4 (December, 2000).
