History

The Inheritors

Originally, their patriarch Solus developed a hunger for the life force of totems which he passed onto deliberately to his offspring that he regularly abused until they became like him. (Spider-Geddon v1 #5)

Centuries ago, they managed to come to universe 000 in order to claim the Master Weaver who resided at the heart of the Web of Life and Destiny. At the time, their mother wanted her favoured son Karn to take the kill but he hesitated which led to their matriarch's death. Shortly afterwards, their patriarch arrived who managed to subdue the Master Weaver but upon seeing the power he wielded he decided to spare the creature's life in order to use it to serve the Inheritors. Thus, Jennix designed shackles that allowed them to control the Master Weaver and use it to help in their hunt for Spider-Totems across the Multiverse. Meanwhile, the family sat in judgement over Karn who was forced to wear a helmet as a mark of shame and sent to endlessly wander across dimensions to hunt spiders until he earned a place back at his family's side. (Superior Spider-Man v1 #33)

Breaking free from the energy field, he once again attacked his foes where his strength allowed him to fight them despite being outnumbered. It was then that the Spider-Totems were attacked themselves by Karn's siblings Brix and Bora who had come to claim the spiders for themselves. They managed to kill several of their spider prey but one of their targets sent Brix's own throwing knives back at her brothers. This caused an argument to erupt between them as Karn hated his quarry being taken by the two twins who saw their brother as a shameful outcast. This infighting allowed their prey to escape thus thwarting their attempts to feast on these totems. (Superior Spider-Man v1 #33)

Daemos arrives in Eastern Europe to target Kaine Parker, and Old Man Spider-Man, Spider-Man of Earth-70105, and Spider-Woman of Earth-65 appear. He breaks the spine of Spider-Man of Earth-70105, and the others escape through a portal. Verna takes her Hounds Sable, Fireheart, and Kravinoff, Puma, and Kraven the Hunter out to hunt, and Morlun is furious that Daemos was hunting on Earth-616. Solus reminds them that he knows where the Bride, the Other, and the Scion are, and about a prophecy which will doom the Inheritors. Morlun says that he wants to be his father's chosen heir; the Great Web is his legacy and obligation. Solus says that the Web is all things and everywhere, and their kingdom makes them inheritors of all creation. (Amazing Spider-Man v3 #9) Spider-Man arrives on Earth-928 and finds Superior Spider-Man in charge. Old Man Spider-Man tells him about the prophecy targeting the Bride, the Other, and the Scion. When Daemos arrives and kills Spider-Cyborg, Superior Spider-Man kills Daemos but he regenerates. As the Spider-Men escape to Earth-13, Spider-Man is told by the dying Old Man Spider-Man to protect the totems. (Amazing Spider-Man v3 #10)

On Earth-13989, Karn killed a werewolf version of Spider-Man. Afterwards, Solus had the Master Weaver send him to a more challenging world. When Morlun and Jennix arrive on Earth-13, they killed Spider-Monkey and a variation of Captain Spider. As Solus killed the Cosmic Spider-Man, Morlun made off with Benjy Parker. (Amazing Spider-Man v3 #11) Ben Reilly of Earth-94, Kaine, and Black Widow of Earth-1610 then ran into that world's version of Tony Stark and overpowered him. (Scarlet Spiders v1 #1) Jennix came to regenerate on Earth-802 and refused to return to battle, leading to Black Widow of Earth-1610, Ben Reilly of Earth-94, and Kaine moving on his headquarters in the Baxter Building. Solus killed Arachnosaurus and Prince of Arachne whereupon he destroyed Takuya Yamashiro's Leopardon. On Earth-3145, Silk arrived as Brix and Bora cannot enter this world. As the Spider-Army moves across dimensions, Jennix monitors them. On Earth-001, Morlun gives Benjy to Brix and Bora. (Amazing Spider-Man v3 #12)

After Black Widow of Earth-1610 and Kaine destroyed the cloning facility on Earth-802, the Inheritors attacked leading to Kaine arriving on Earth-001 and transforming into a spider that impaled Solus. (Amazing Spider-Man v3 #13) In the end, the Spider-Army managed to overpower the Inheritors and stop the ritual which would've ended them all. The Inheritors were left in Earth-3145, a universe with a radioactive Earth, where they would die due to them being extremely vulnerable to radiation, and could not escape, because the Master Weaver they had enslaved and used to travel across the Multiverse had been killed. However, Spider-Man gave them the knowledge of a shelter in Sims Tower, where they could survive, but not pose a threat anymore. (Amazing Spider-Man v3 #14)

Spider-Geddon

In the aftermath, the Spider-Men and Master Weaver have been watching Earth-3145. Although the Inheritors are undernourished from a lack of spiders, they are collecting the heads of the Spider-Bots. (Spider-Geddon v1 #0) With the Spider-Bot robots, they managed to hack into an inter-dimensional signal that they intended to use to activate a cloning bank through which they could transmit their consciousnesses into new clone bodies elsewhere as a means of escaping their prison. (Superior Octopus v1 #1) Such cloning technology was present in the secret laboratory of Doctor Octopus who had reverse engineered it for his own use to create cloned bodies for himself to escape death. The Web Warriors came to learn of this danger and broke into the lab in an effort to destroy the cloning bank but were opposed by Doctor Octopus who did not believe their warnings and was angry at the intrusion. He claimed that his technology could not be co-opted but he was proven wrong as all the readouts were hacked allowing the Inheritors to be reborn on Earth-616 where they intended to consume more totems to restore themselves to their true strength. (Spider-Geddon v1 #1) Despite the resistance from the Spider-Totems, they were unable to stop the two Inheritors who managed to escape whereupon Jennix established a base at a former New U facility in order to make use of the Jackal's technology to clone the rest of their family. Thus, the Inheritors had escaped their imprisonment and sought to resurrect their father Solus. (Spider-Geddon v1 #2)

Solus' body is restored as Daemos, Brix, Bora, and Jennix await for Verna's return with the crystal. Spider-Ham reports back to the group. They are attacked by Brix, Bora, and Daemos. During the retreat, Superior Spider-Man learns that Jennix is having trouble with New U Technologies' cloning technology. (Spider-Geddon v1 #3)

The actions of Verna sent Jessica Drew to the rest of the Inheritors alongside the crystal containing the mind of their father Solus. With it, they transferred Solus's mind into a new clone body where he intended to turn Earth-616 into their new homeworld. (Spider-Geddon v1 #4)

In the battle, the Spider-Army was assisted by the Enigma Force that empowered Miles Morales as Captain Universe who battled Solus. Octavius then hatched a plot to defeat the Inheritors with the rest of the Spider-Army following him. This led to Miles killing Solus and the defeat of the Inheritors who were killed but had their minds placed within infant clones of themselves thus leading to their defeat except for Morlun who remained within the custody of the NYPD. (Spider-Geddon v1 #5)

End of the Spider-Verse

After the totemic wasp-goddess Shathra had been freed once more, she eventually corrupted Spider-Ma'am and killed all baby Inheritors, leaving Morlun the only Inheritor alive. (Spider-Man v4 #2) Forced to work alongside the remaining Spider-Totems to stop Shathra, Morlun uses, in the heat of a battle, the Totem Dagger against Shatra, which can sever someone from the Great Web. The problem is that the blade only works on Spider-Totems, meaning it has no effect on her. As Shatra proceeds to beat Morlun into the ground, she reveals to Morlun's shame, the true origins of the Inheritors, stating that they are far from the all-powerful hunters they want everybody to believe. Actually they are Totems themselves, imbued with the power to drain the life force of others, the psychic vampires are simply the Totems of the Leech, the lowest of them all, who saw an opportunity to target the Spider-Totems to steal their power and their connection to the Web of Life. (Spider-Man v4 #6)

Overview

They were known as the Aristokratia who were Inheritors of everything in existence. (Spider-Force v1 #2) They appeared to be unique in Multiverse, as they had no variants. (Superior Spider-Man v1 #33)

Their kind were said to hunt the Spider-Totems with this being their way. This was deemed a requirement of their family and a necessity for their survival. (Superior Spider-Man v1 #33)

Notes

  • The Inheritors were created by Jim Butcher, Christos Gage, and M.A. Sepulveda where they made their first appearance in Superior Spider-Man v1 #33 (November 2014).
  • Though they made their first appearance as part of Spider-Verse, Morlun himself was created by J. Michael Straczynski and John Romita Jr. who first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man v2 #30 (June 2001).
  • On CBR, writer Christos Gage wrote in an interview, "They’re terrific villains – they literally eat spider-people! They’re like vampires who feed on their life forces. And now that they're back, they have a score to settle. They’re trying to recapture their former power and glory, and God help anyone who gets in the way."

Novels

  • In Spider-Man: The Darkest Hours, Morluns race were referred to as the Ancients who made an appearance in the novel written by Jim Butcher that published by Simon & Schuster. Their role was described as being the natural order of things. After his death, it was shown that there were three fellow Ancients that included Mortia, Thanis and Malos who sought to get revenge on Spider-Man. Restricted to just this one Earth, they are defeated by Spider-Man with additional aid from Black Cat and the Rhino, culminating in Mary Jane Watson driving her car into the last Ancient standing, the wall-crawler realising that all of their kind are vulnerable when feeding as their attention is focused elsewhere. Once all three have been rendered unconscious, the Ancients are banished to another dimension by Spider-Man using three mystical objects discreetly given to him earlier by Doctor Strange.
