History

The Insectons were a humanoid race of insects that were native to the galaxy and had evolved on strange lines. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #2)

Despite attempts to do so, it was not easy to confine this insectoid species to their domain in the galaxy as they sought to expand their swarm. A group within their cosmic swarm was noted to always break quarantine whereupon they seized worlds in other systems. One world that fell to the Insectons was Tallant IV where they swiftly took over it and turned the once lush planet into a barren hive. The Galactic Rangers on-board the Tiger led by Captain Victory laid siege to the hive planet where they destroyed it with a world-killer but not before the Lightning Lady and her Regent escaped on their ship where the sought a new world to re-establish their hive. They sought a new world at the galaxy's edge that was uncharted and unknown to the Rangers in order to escape their notice. The pair of Insecton leaders managed to discover the location of an isolated world known as Earth where they desired to rebuild their forces as the planet was far from upholders of galactic law. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #1) They set about constructing their hive near Spartanville when a number of their soldiers were killed by Rangers from the Tiger that had arrived on Earth to combat the Insecton menace. After making peaceful contact with the natives, Captain Victory discovered that the Insecton Regent had been killed by the local police with his body being examined by a human coroner. To aid in building the hive, the Insectons deployed their absorber to control the minds of the native humans and have them operate as a labour force. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #2) This brought them into conflict with the Ranger force and the human inhabitants who attempted to lay siege to the hive. Though trapped, the Insecton workers continued their efforts at extending their hive with their tunnels reaching all the way to Philadelphia. All containment efforts failed leading to Captain Victory deploying the newly created Drainer that absorbed all forms of energy nearby including life thus destroying the hive. The Insectons attempted to flee on their ship but it was attacked by the giant humanoid Drainer that sought their life energy and latched itself on the vessel as it went into space whereupon it exploded killing them both. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #6)

Overview

In appearance, the Insectons were humanoid insect-based life forms encased in a living armoured carapace that came in a variety of sizes and forms with them being referred to as Homo Insectus. These creatures could store burning acid in their bodies which they could eject to kill prey whilst their claws could maul enemies leaving deep wounds. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #6) New members of their kind were birthed in life-cells that were fed with potent energy. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #2) From there, new Regents to develop into maturity to replace old slain ones. Similarly, a new Lightning Lady could be born within the hive and she was able to replace a missing queen. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #4) They were noted for being cannibals who filled living organisms with fluid before storing them as food. This left the prey as bloated sacs of fluid as their skins were inflated to grotesque proportions. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #3) Insectons were noted to disintegrate completely when they die as if their cells acted to prevent any attempt at betrayal of the hive. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #2)

Insectons were an aggressive insect society that were highly evolved and intelligent. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #3) Their race was divided into a caste type of hierarchy with soldiers, workers and drones with new types of Insectons being grown to suit different tasks or needs. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #2) Some Insectons were known to possess wings and were deployed as an air force for their race. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #4) A queen led the hive with these being known as the Lightning Lady who was accompanied by a Regent that guided their society. Queens were noted to hold sensory powers allowing them to strike remotely against their enemies. Their own living energy could also propel their vessels at light-speed. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #1) Queens served as strategic command for the Insectons and was the source of their power with them able to probe the thoughts of their kind to keep up to speed on developments affecting their hive. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #4) This was due to their super-sensitives faculties allowing them to probe and analyse events. Lightning Queens could manifest their power as lightning-bolts that she could emit from the hive to strike at her targets from a great distance after sensing the presence of enemies. If the Regent was killed, then the hive fell under the Lightning Queen who served as the mind of the hive with the rest obeying her as if they were a single body. To increase their hive, they used their technology to force the native race into the mental control of the hive-mind leading to them turning the sentient species of the host world into drones. These served both as a labour force and also as hostages to prevent their enemies from actively destroying them as they would seek to avoid killing innocents. Possessed sentient beings were sent into danger where they experienced no fear or hesitation with them being sacrificed by the hive in battle. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #2) Within their hives, they wasted nothing whether it was living or dead with everything be used for a purpose. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #3)

They were born for conquest and had a lust for subjugating other species. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #6) They did not flinch in the face of death as they were beings of unchanging wrath and power. Nothing was sacred to them with both life and death being equally scorned by their kind. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #4) Insecton warriors set about in the defence of their hives. They saw life as being one of battle and that death was their destiny with their pattern never changing as they fought to the death. When their hives were attacked, the Insectons engaged in a mass assault as they entered into a killing frenzy where nothing survived as they followed their mad instincts. In their conflict, they made use of terror in ways that were not seen among other species as they sought to ensure that their way of life prevailed. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #2) Insectons reacted with terrible force when there was close inspection or even the slightest intrusion into their hives. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #3) In battle, they sought to win conflicts through sheer numbers that were sent against their enemies. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #1) Typically, Insecton captives were said to be beyond rescue and better off dead. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #3) The Insecton way meant that they did not use weapons that destroyed their targets as they preferred live foes that they could use first before eating them. During attacks, they swarmed and grabbed onto an prey that they dragged back into their lairs. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #4)

After landing on a world, they sent about in the construction of a hive with them believing that no force in the cosmos stopping this process. Insecton expansion on a planet was capable of dooming a native species. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #2) Upon taking over a world, they subverted the native population as they transformed it into a planetary hive. This saw once lush green planets being turned barren with massive pits on the surface leading to a network of cave cities that fed on the world's innards. These travel-pits served as entry points deeper into the planet and to the hive network. Infested worlds were then turned into cold empty shells that orbited their sun. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #1) Insecton hives were an ever growing maze of monstrous tunnels with the centre containing the royal chamber where the new leaders of the Insectons matured from chambers filled with life fluid. The created fresh food channels that consisted of organic vents filled with emptying liquid and was used to send dead prey that floated in these areas as they were redirected in the vast hive. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #4)

Their computers contained analysers that recorded all possible information. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #1) Another device they had created was the absorber that generated pulsating waves of electronic energy that cast the mind of the hive over a set area around it. Non-Insecton life was affected as they fell under the mind of the hive and sought to accomplish its goals. Such a system was used to recruit labour from a planet's native population in the construction of the hive as these sapient life forms fell under the commands of the Insectons as they were under their mental control. This control was not absolute as some were resisters that could reject the mind-wave and their individuality could return at which point the Insectons subjected the person with another blast to return them to the hive-mind. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #2)

The Insectons were advanced enough to create interstellar capable spacecraft that included assault ships to attack their enemies. (Captain Victory and the Galactic Rangers v1 #1) Among their vessels included tribal transport class ships that were armed with 40 guns and could be submerged underwater.
