In Greek myth, Io was one of the many women that Zeus had an affair with. Io was the daughter of the river god Inachus, and a priestess of Hera. Zeus lured her out of Hera's service, and changed her into a cow so that he could have his way with her away from Hera's knowledge. However, the goddess ruined this attempt, and later Zeus and Io made love on a cloud over Egypt. She had children from this encounter.

Io is believed to be connected to the Egyptian goddess Hathor.
