Biography

Iron Maiden Jeanne.

Iron Maiden Jeanne (Japanese: アイアン・メイデン・ジャンヌ, Hepburn: Aian Meiden Jannu) was a female human born on March 2, 1990 in Lorraine, France. Growing up as an orphan at Mont-Saint-Michel, she developed a strong will and great shamanic power allowing her to manipulate Furyoku. Upon discovering her, Luchist and Marco Lasso decided to raise her to believe she was a holy person who was destined to destroy Hao Asakura. She received the god of justice Shamash as her Guardian Ghost and vowed to become the Iron Maiden, taking on the world's sins and pain in exchange for the power to save the world

She arrived where she was encased within a massive, spiked iron maiden that hovered above the Shaman Fight arena. During her first five chapters of appearance, she remained largely shrouded in mystery and physical restraint, symbolizing her role as a holy martyr who endured constant agony to purge the world of evil. She initially presided over the brutal confrontation between the X-II team and Team Niles, where she watched as her subordinates executed their opponents with cold precision. When she finally emerged from her iron sarcophagus, she revealed herself as a young girl clad in a dress of thorns, projecting an aura of overwhelming mana that terrified onlookers. She did not just observe; she actively directed her spirit, Shamash, to deliver divine judgment upon those she deemed beyond redemption. Her presence shifted the entire atmosphere of the tournament, as she coldly justified the slaughter of her enemies as a necessary sacrifice for a world of peace. Throughout these introductory moments, she maintained a serene yet terrifying composure, speaking of love and justice while her divine class spirit crushed the opposition, establishing her as one of the most powerful and uncompromising contenders for the title of Shaman King. Iron Maiden Jeanne continued to assert her terrifying authority as she moved further into the Shaman Fight, focusing her efforts on the elimination of those she branded as incorrigible villains. During this period, she remained centered on her mission to support the X-LAWS and their quest to destroy Hao, maintaining a state of perpetual suffering within her iron maiden to bolster her spiritual power. She oversaw the continued tactical movements of her followers, radiating a divine calm even as the tournament's violence escalated around her. When confronted with the moral complexities of the Shaman Fight, she doubled down on her black-and-white view of justice, refusing to show mercy to anyone who stood in the way of her holy war. She utilized her massive mana reserves to manifest Shamash on a scale that dwarfed typical spirits, using the deity to enforce her will and intimidate rival teams. Her actions were defined by a chilling combination of childlike innocence and fanatical resolve, as she believed every drop of blood spilled under her command served a higher, redemptive purpose.

Following the execution of the Nile team, Jeanne returned to her iron maiden to endure constant physical penance, maintaining her role as the symbolic heart of the X-Laws. She remained largely secluded within her torture device to accumulate the mana necessary for her holy war, while her subordinates, Lyserg and Marco, handled the logistical fallout of their brutal victory. When Yoh Asakura later confronted the X-Laws to demand they stop their lethal methods, Jeanne briefly emerged to assert her unyielding brand of justice, viewing Yoh's compassion as a dangerous form of weakness that allowed evil to thrive. She sanctioned the group’s next tactical moves, which involved tracking the movements of Hao’s followers and preparing for the next round of the tournament. Throughout this period, she acted as a judge from behind the curtains of her chamber, issuing orders that prioritized the total eradication of 'sinners' above any personal safety or moral nuance. Her presence acted as a divine anchor for her followers, reinforcing their fanatical devotion even as the psychological toll of her 'absolute justice' began to strain the team's dynamics. Jeanne reappeared as the X-Laws intensified their surveillance of Hao’s movements, maintaining her state of constant prayer and physical suffering within the iron maiden to bolster her spiritual strength. When the threat of Hao’s followers became more immediate, she authorized Marco and the other members to engage in preemptive strikes, viewing these skirmishes as necessary purges before the final judgment. She oversaw the tactical deployment of her squad with a cold, detached grace, remaining convinced that her role was to bear the sins of the world through her own agony while directing her 'angels' to eliminate any obstacles. During this period, she exerted her immense mana to keep her followers' spirits tethered to their physical forms, acting as a living battery for the group’s combat capabilities. Her influence was felt in every decision the X-Laws made, as she continued to preach a gospel of absolute righteousness that left no room for compromise or retreat. Even when faced with the growing realization of Hao's overwhelming power, she remained steadfast in her divine mission, preparing herself for the eventual moment she would have to step onto the battlefield once more to enforce the will of Shamash.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Iron Maiden Jeanne was a young female human who possessed a solemn and haunting presence that defied her youth. Cloaked in mystique and sanctity, she was most often seen within her iron maiden—a medieval torture device that doubled as both her throne and sanctum. This towering, dark metal capsule bore a gothic design, covered in iron spikes and religious symbols, evoking both martyrdom and divinity. When sealed within, only the faint glow of spirit energy and whispers of her voice betrayed her presence, enhancing her ethereal image as the leader of the X-Laws. Upon emerging, Jeanne revealed her true form: a petite young girl with pale, almost porcelain-like skin and long, silver-blonde hair tied in soft braids or left cascading in angelic waves. Her eyes were serene, yet distant—colored a pale lilac or blue depending on interpretation, always reflecting unwavering conviction. She dressed in white ceremonial robes trimmed with gold and crimson, resembling a mix of ecclesiastical garb and knightly vestments, complete with a halo-like adornment or headpiece that reinforced her saintly image. The contrast between her divine vesture and the gruesome artifact she resided in created a compelling paradox—innocence framed by sacrifice and death. When in her armored oversoul form, Jeanne wore a purplish metallic leotard with four metallic protrusions on her midsection area, an iron belt with a key lock in the center, a purplish cap with the Iron Maiden hat on the back of the headgear, wears sandals with spikes going into her feet, giant lock on her abdominal region like a chastity belt and has what appear to be large thumbscrews on her hands. After the Shaman Fight, she marries Tao Ren and takes his surname, being now referred to as Tao Jeanne, the Iron Maiden (道アイアン・メイデン・ジャンヌ Dao Aian Meiden Jannu).

Iron Maiden Jeanne’s personality was a blend of divine compassion and terrifying fanaticism. She was unwavering in her belief that her actions—however violent—were for the salvation of humanity. As leader of the X-Laws, she bore the crushing burden of moral purity, demanding absolute obedience and the destruction of evil as defined by her own strict dogma. Jeanne's world was binary: justice or corruption, light or darkness. This conviction gave her immense resolve but also blinded her to the nuances of individual lives and the consequences of extremism. She viewed suffering as sanctifying, subjecting herself to horrific pain within the iron maiden as penance and spiritual reinforcement. This self-imposed torment was both a testament to her belief and a psychological scar left by a life of coercion and expectation. Jeanne rarely showed emotion beyond beatific calm; her serene voice and stoic posture were masks crafted to project divinity rather than vulnerability. She inspired absolute loyalty from her followers, but also instilled fear—her purity demanded sacrifice, and her love came at the cost of complete submission.

Yet beneath her stoicism and doctrine was a fragile soul shaped by manipulation and isolation. Raised and revered as a messianic figure by the X-Laws, Jeanne had been stripped of personal freedom, molded into a living symbol rather than a girl. Her belief in justice became a coping mechanism—a lens through which she could find purpose amidst the horror of war and the burdens of leadership. Encounters with Yoh Asakura and his allies forced her to confront the limitations of her worldview. Their empathy, defiance of binaries, and resistance to absolute judgment gradually began to crack her sanctified shell. Jeanne was not unfeeling—she had simply forgotten how to exist as a person rather than a prophet. Over time, she demonstrated the capacity for compassion beyond duty, and choices guided by love rather than law. Her journey from icon to individual was not one of rejection, but of awakening—realizing that to save the world, one must first understand its pain rather than punish it.

She was extremely charismatic and Tamamura Tamao calls her a 'princess' after hearing her speak for the first time.

Powers and abilities

She spends nearly all her time inside the iron maiden keeping her in a near-death state, as she goes through constant periods of getting hurt and then healing, in order to slowly increase her strength by causing her Furyoku to gradually rise. It contains numerous sharp iron spikes and nails that pierce the flesh, causing great pain. There are so many spikes inside that even someone as slender as Jeanne still gets hurt.

Her iron maiden is made of solid iron and is quite heavy, however, it was easily crushed by one of the Patch Officiants, Magna. It was later repaired and kept in a shed in Funbari Onsen until it was stolen by Team YVS.

Television

  • In Shaman King, Iron Maiden Jeanne appeared in the 2001 anime television series adaptation where she was voiced by Japanese actress Yui Horie and by English voice actress Veronica Taylor. Iron Maiden Jeanne was introduced as the leader of the X-Laws, a militant faction of shamans devoted to eradicating evil through divine justice. She was portrayed as a young girl confined within an iron maiden as a form of self-imposed penance, believing that her suffering would bring her closer to purity and allow her to act as a vessel for divine will. As leader, she maintained a calm, unwavering demeanor and issued orders through her subordinate, Marco, while remaining enclosed in her iron maiden for most of the series. She possessed a spirit ally named Shamash, which she summoned with overwhelming divine fury, often obliterating her enemies with massive destructive power. During the events of the Shaman Fight, she led the X-Laws in multiple confrontations against Hao and his followers, declaring their absolute intent to destroy the Great Spirit’s future vessel. Her ideology emphasized judgment over forgiveness, with little tolerance for those who sympathized with Hao or refused to support the X-Laws' crusade. Their plan was to use an ability of Shamash known as the Gate of Babylon that would open a portal to another dimension where they intended to imprison Hao Asakura. When Jeanne finally gathered enough Furyoku to open the gate, everyone present, including the X-Laws, Yoh's friends and Hao's followers were pulled into the gate. However, Hao breaks out of the powerful prison, as the Spirit of Fire grabs Shamash in with them and devoured Shamash, gaining his powers. The prison then proceeded to crumble, releasing all of its occupants and rendering her powerless. As the conflict with Hao escalated, the X-Laws suffered mounting casualties including the deaths of key members such as Marco and Luchist. Jeanne's role diminished and her crusade culminated in failure, as the X-Laws were unable to stop Hao’s ascension.
