History

Jaegers were large mecha that were created by humanity following the invasion of the planet by Kaiju. Following an attack on San Francisco, numerous such assaults occurred globally leading to untold amounts of damage and loss of life. In response, the nations of the world decided to put aside their rivalries and looked to find a means of combating this threat. A number of solutions were attempted before mankind decided that the only way to match these titanic monsters was to create a monster of their own. Thus, the Jaeger Program was created with the task of creating gigantic mecha in order to use technology to match the gargantuan monsters. Dr. Lars Gottlieb was a noted scientist that was responsible for developing the gigantic mecha. Upon deployment, the Jaegers proved to be a success and they managed to score kills against the Kaiju. In time, the pilots came to be regarded as celebrities for their efforts in defending humanity and were used as part of propaganda pieces.

By 2019, the Jaeger Program was noted to had been operating as its height with 30 active units. However, increased losses began to be sustained with more powerful Kaiju beginning to emerge with these being Category 4 creatures. It was believed that the monsters were adapting and evolving in the face of the human response. Thus, support for the Jaegers began to diminish with resources instead being diverted towards building Anti-Kaiju Walls. Despite the destruction of the Sydney Wall within hours of an attack, the U.N. reused to support the construction of further Jaegers. However, they did allow Marshal Stacker Pentecost 8 months of funding and support for continued operations out of Hong Kong along with use of four recently decommissioned Jaeger units.

Shao Industries later began work on its Drone Program that sought to use automation to allow for Drone Jaeger to be operated remotely by a single pilot. The project was being showcased to the United Nations which threatened to shutdown the Pan Pacific Defense Corps as a result if successful. Newton Geiszler had joined the company where he served as lead scientist in the project. Unknown to anyone, Geiszler's prior drifting with the Kaiju brain had affected his mind causing the Precursors to take control of his brain. Thus, they influenced his actions in bringing about their return so that they could conquer Earth and had him use the Drone Jaeger Program as a means of accomplishing this goal. As such, he began to use cloned Kaiju brain-matter that was installed within the Jaeger Drones being produced by Shao Industries. He then had a rogue Drone Jaeger named Obsidian Fury attack the U.N. conference in Sydney so that it could kill Mako Mori who had a deciding vote for the deployment of the Drone Program. Afterwards, the project was given the go-ahead for mass deployment which was when Geiszler activated his hidden programming causing the cloned brains to mutate the Drone Jaegers leading to run amok. Groups of them were being used to create new Breaches to allow the Kaiju to invade the planet again but this was stopped by a feedback loop made by Shao Industries CEO Liwen Shao thus destroying the drones but not before three new Kaiju had arrived on Earth.

Overview

In appearance, the Jaegers were mecha that came in a variety of forms but were largely humanoid in form. They were designed to generate as much kinetic energy as tactical ordnance in a fight against a Kaiju. Weaponry could range from GD6 Chain Swords, I-19 Plasmacasters, the improved IB22 Plasmacasters, and the WMB2x90 Anti-Kaiju Missile Launchers.

A unique neural interface was used to help pilots in the operation of the gigantic machines. However, the load on the interface was too much for a single pilot to operate. Thus, a two-pilot system was implemented whereby one controlled the left hemisphere and the other pilot controlled the right hemisphere. When the pilots were within the Jaeger, a pilot-to-pilot connect was established through a 'neural handshake' that was initiated where the pair were placed within a shared mindspace known as The Drift. This Jaeger technology was based on the neural systems developed for DARPA jet fighters. Once initiated, the two pilots mind-melded through memories as they merged with the body of the giant machine. The deeper the bond between the pilots then the better they fought as their synchronisation allowed them to operate the Jaeger more efficiently. Some rare few Jaegers were known to operate a three pilot system.

Ultimately, a Jaeger was only ever as good as their pilots. Thus, those that were successful came to be famous celebrities among humanity. As part of the PPDC, pilots were referred to by the rank of Ranger. They were typically equipped with a Drivesuit that was a type of body armor used to interface with the Jaeger and protect the body of the pilot who resided in the Jaeger's Conn-Pod. Some Jaegers were known to be equipped with an artificial intelligence where they assisted the pilots during the Jaeger's operations.

To assist in training, Trainer Jaegers were created to help pilots learn to operate the giant machines. As part of their operations, these machines were noted equipped with weaponry but enacted simulations to help in the training of the pilot. Another variant of these mecha were the Drone Jaeger that all shared a similar appearance and were mass produced. These Jaegers were designed to be remotely controlled with multiple able to be operated by a single pilot. Smaller versions of Jaegers could be created who due to their size did not require two pilots and could operate with a single controller.

The Pan Pacific Defense Corps created Shatterdomes as facilities designed to build and maintain Jaegers. Groups of Jaegers were stationed there where they came to be part of a Strike Group.

Within the field, it was known that Jaegers could be deployed to fight Kaiju by using squadrons of V-50 Jumphawks.
