Biography

Jason Macendale, Jr.

Hobgoblin
The elder Fisk was unimpressed with Macendale and his threat against him. Kingpin told him he was a pathetic little man who after being defeated by a superior foe simply beat helpless underlings with Fisk being unimpressed. The Hobgoblin threatened to kill him, until he saw the fifty guns pointed at him causing the villain to flee the scene. He found Spider-Man with the file of Leeds identity and a fight broke out. Spidey was injured and on the ground, when Flash Thompson saved him from a pumpkin bomb, throwing it back at Hobgoblin. Macendale fled once more after thinking that the explosion must have cracked some ribs. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #289)
Macendale again attacked the Kingpin, demanding to know why he had been blacklisted for any hit jobs in New York. The Arranger told him that Fisk still was not impressed by this new Hobgoblin and could only change his mind if he proved himself. Arranger suggested that Hobgoblin kill Spider-Man, an idea that Macendale enjoyed. Hobgoblin was then unceremoniously toss out the skyscraper window by Arranger's bodyguard, Tombstone. Later, Hobgoblin tried to flush Spider-Man out by causing mayhem with traffic. Harry Osborn called Peter to tell him that he and Liz Osborn will be late for a party due to the Hobgoblin. Spider-Man, a little tipsy from spiked punch at the party, went after the Hobgoblin. Even thought he was off balance and slurring his words, Spider-Man managed to defeat Hobgoblin. At a later date, the Hobgoblin began stalking Harry and the Osborns. He eventually attacked Liz and Normie Osborn, demanding to know where "it" was. Spider-Man arrives but Hobgoblin only leaves after Harry told him that the Green Goblin formula was at Oscorp in Manhattan. Spider-Man followed Hobby into the city and so did Harry...as the Green Goblin. (Web of Spider-Man v1 #47)
Demogoblin
After a humiliating defeat at the hands of Spider-Man and the Green Goblin, the Hobgoblin Macendale sought greater power to destroy all his enemies At this time, the city was being attacked by Demons due to the events of the Inferno. Several of the creatures attacked Macendale who destroyed them and followed the Demons to their master N'astirh. The demon lord wanted to be entertained by the human with Macendale his own soul in exchange for power. N'astirh responded with a laugh at the quality of the mortals soul but did admit that this made him laugh. Thus, he decided to grant the humans wish and transformed him into a partly demonic being. Later on, the Hobgoblin became leader of the Sinister Seven. He was concentrating his efforts on riding his new organization of Doctor Octopus' killer, Kaine. During this time, he had some trouble obtaining the Vulture's cooperation. (Spider-Man Unlimited v1 #9)
Macendale revealed to the press of killing and replacing his apparent predecessor, Ned Leeds. He was transferred to Great Neck. He experienced nightmares of being haunted by Spider-Man and the Hobgoblin. Waking up, he was confronted by a mysterious figure standing outside his cell. He had the same voice as the Hobgoblin; in fact, he was the Hobgoblin. Ned Leeds was a "dupe" donning the costume. Because Macendale had become such an embarrassment, he had to die. And thus, he was blasted within close range, reduced to a smoldering skeleton. (Spider-Man: Hobgoblin Lives v1 #1)
Some time later, the Jackal brought Macendale back to life in a new cloned body; Hobgoblin decided to stay with the Jackal, serving him at New U Technologies with other resurrected Spider-Man's villains. (Clone Conspiracy v1 #2)

Jack O'Lantern employs numerous types of custom designed a grenades including anaerobic, lachrymatory, regurgitant gas, smoke, and concussion grenades. Jack O'Lantern wears a complete body armor made of metal-covered, multi segment Kevlar panels, incorporating a rigid, articulated shell which can resist a 7 lb. bazooka anti-gun warhead. - Jason Macendale was created by Tom DeFalco and Steve Ditko where he first appeared as Jack O'Lantern in Machine Man v1 #19 (February, 1981) and later as the Hobgoblin in Amazing Spider-Man v1 #289 (June, 1987).
- In Back Issue! v1 #35 (2009), writer Roger Stern commented, "When I was preparing to revisit the Hobgoblin, I went over the story that Howard [Mackie] and JR had done in Spider-Man #68, which was still fairly recent at the time, and I said to the editors, "Wow, they did all this work to revamp the second Hobgoblin—what do you want me to do? I can have Macendale beat my guy [Kingsley], anything you want, because you just went to all this trouble." I heard back and was told that I could open my story by having my guy kill Macendale. That left things pretty open![emphasis in original]."

Television
- In Spider-Man, Jason Macendale appeared as a villain in the guise of Hobgoblin in the animated television series where he was voiced by actor Mark Hamill. He was first introduced in the episode "The Hobgoblin" though his real identity was not revealed until "Goblin War". This version appeared before the Green Goblin with the Hobgoblin being a mercenary hired by Norman Osborn who equipped him with his equipment and tasked him with eliminating Wilson Fisk. After failing due to Spider-Man, Osborn fired him but the Hobgoblin went rogue where he allied with the Kingpin where he revealed that Norman had hired him to eliminate Fisk. Despite this new alliance, Hobgoblin was shown as being greedy in that he desired more power leading to Fisk turning on him. In his civilian identity of Jason Macendale, he began romancing Felicia Hardy where he intended to take her fortune before it was revealed by Green Goblin that he was the Hobgoblin.
