Biography

Jolyne Cujoh in Stone Ocean v1 #1.

Jolyne Cujoh (Japanese: 空条 徐倫, Hepburn: Kūjō Jorīn, Alternatively: Jolyne Kujo) was a female human born in the modern age as the daughter of Jotaro Kujo and an American woman he came to marry in Florida. She came to be the sixth generation Joestar in the Joestar bloodline. Her childhood was often spent with the absence of her father, and it was often that Jotaro was mostly at work, even when Jolyne was in need of the most attention. At 14, her life as a teen would spiral downward on then upon being mistaken for a suspect in a robbery she didn't commit and fleeing from an officer by stealing a motorcycle. Upon being arrested and detained in a holding cell, falsely charged with the crime, she and her mother pleaded her innocence and even begged Jotaro to bail her out, but in the end, did not believe her, sending Jolyne to juvenile detention.

Later on, her mother came to divorce her father with this leaving Jolyne even more frustrated after Jotaro had left the family. Acting out, Cujoh began to join the Hell Riders motorcycle and carjacking gang with this getting her into more trouble. By 19 years old, she decided to clean up her act and left the gang where she was in her senior year at high school. In this time, she go involved with a rich boy named Romeo Jisso (ロメオ・ジッソ) and went on a date with him. Whilst driving home, Romeo and Jolyne became involve in a car accident where her boyfriend seemingly had fatally run over a pedestrian. She wanted to help the person but Romeo convinced her to hide and then bury the body as he could be charged with reckless driving and dropped from the university waiting list due to the accident. After persuading Jolyne, Romeo had convinced her to forget about the entire incident. Despite this, the incident was discovered leading to the two being arrested for the crime.

This resulted in Jolyne being sent to jail where she remained in a cell for some time. One day, she was caught masturbating by one of the guards, making her bash her head against her bed in shame. She also got acquainted with a fellow prisoner named Ermes Costello and shuts up another prisoner that chastises her for being too horny when she notes that she can see when other women masturbate by looking at her left ring finger's joints. Jolyne meets with her lawyer, who informed her that she was being prosecuted and that her bail had been refused. He said that the procedure could take months and thus she will be transferred to Green Dolphin Street Prison for the time being; the lawyer also brought her some essential personal belongings, and a peculiar pendant on which she pricked her finger. Upon looking inside, Jolyne saw a sharp rock shard but was more focused on the fact that it came from her father. Jotaro had instructed Jolyne's mother to give this to Jolyne in case she got into trouble but she instead threw it away in anger. On November 6, 2011, Jolyne was transferred to Green Dolphin Street Prison where she came to befriend Ermes Costello. Ermes warned her on how it was vital to have money in prison with Jolyne accidentally guesses that Costello was hiding some money in her breasts. Upon arrival, Jolyne was escorted towards the gates but realized that Ermes was isolated and mugged by the guards for her money as they overheard the conversation. Confused, Jolyne saw that her finger had unraveled into a string that transmitted the sound toward her. To save Ermes, Jolyne instinctively controlled the string to have a guard cut his own ear. This led to the guards stopping their attack on Ermes and Jolyne's string came to disappear. After acquiring some money, Jolyne came to understand that this power was linked to her father's gift.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Jolyne Cujoh was a young woman of above-average height and a slim to athletic build. As a Joestar, she had a small, star-shaped birthmark on her with this being located on the rear of her left shoulder where it was close to her neck. The tattoo on her left arm is a sign of her past membership in a car-stealing gang. It's hinted that she had been arrested before while in the gang, presumably to protect the other members. One of her nicknames was JoJo though only her mother called her that name.

Quick to anger and snappy with her elders, it seemed like Jolyne was a lost cause. She was irresponsible and flighty, at first only looking to satisfy a cheap thrill. Bitter at Jotaro for leaving the family for so long, she blamed him for her misguided outlook. However, she still had honorable morals and treasured her mother. She would selflessly do everything in her power to help her friends (as evidenced with F.F.). Jolyne believed that her loved ones had a good heart and an honest nature. Unfortunately, she can believe in them to the point of being gullible as it was through Romeo's lies that she was sentenced to a prison sentence of 15 years.

She was shown to possess a fierce determination that carried her through several battles and inspired her companions. Her determination is so great that she was willing to lose life or limb to defeat her enemy and save her comrades.

Her distant and near-fatherless childhood bore a tinge of loneliness in her. Their relationship is challenging at first, not really fitting the typical father-daughter mold. When Jolyne was fourteen, she was wrongfully accused of pickpocketing. Panicked, she stole a car and sloppily tried to make an escape from the authorities, leading to her being arrested and taken into custody. Jolyne anticipated for Jotaro to pay the bail for her but was sorely disappointed when she overheard her mother's frantic and unsuccessful pleas with him on the phone. Her father's absences following this led to her teenage years of delinquency (she later reflects these events as a desperate call for attention). When Jotaro sacrifices himself for Jolyne's freedom, she noticeably matures and her resolve to "revive" Jotaro turns into her first priority. She adopts more traits like her father and her wardrobe even changes to resemble Jotaro's look. She eventually gains pride for her Joestar bloodline and she becomes rather tough by the end of the series. Her strength and infallible integrity shine in her fights and her willpower soon echoed that of other Jojos. As time passed, Jolyne came to respect her father more and idolized him somewhat, adapting his trademark "Yare yare daze" into a more feminine "Yare yare dawa". When Jotaro returns later, both father and daughter show considerable care to one another, each in their own way.

Jolyne's mother rarely appears and is hardly talked about. It's assumed that she loves Jolyne very much and dotes on her in Jotaro's absence as she is one of the few people to call Jolyne "JoJo". It's mentioned that she is an Italian-American, making Jolyne 1/4 Japanese, 1/4 American, 3/8 Italian, and 1/8 British.

Powers and abilities

Jolyne Cujoh was born a normal human until her incarceration at the Green Dolphin prison where she was given a locket that contained a piece of the Arrow. Upon scratching her finger, it imparted her with the ability to manifest a Stand (スタンド Sutando) which was the physical manifestation of her life energy. In her case, this took the form of feminine figure called Stone Free (ストーン・フリー Sutōn Furī) that was a unique close-range Stand that could be be summoned for a fight and provided Jolyne with integrated abilities. At first, this only appeared as a silk-like thread she could manifest from her fingers and shoot out at targets. With it, she could achieve a variety of feats such as attaching it to an object to pull towards her, help her listen conversations some distance away through a strand of it or to tie a person with it. Though soft and supple, the strings she generated could only be sharp and slice through body parts if sufficient force was applied through them. In one case, she was able to send the threads into a gun where they attached to the bullets whereby she could redirect the shots fired at her. If the strands were torn then she felt intense physical pain on her body as a result. Shortly afterwards, she came to manifest her Stand in a physical form where it formed to protect her from an enemy. It was said that her Stand's range was around 2 meters. Using its arms and fists, it was shown to be capable of deflecting bullets and was strong enough to bend metal bars. Similar to other Stands, it was said that Stone Free was invisible to normal people and could only be perceived by Stand users.

Later, she can unravel up to 70 percent of her entire body into a string and quickly reassemble herself. She can also 'cut' her string form and make it independent from her body. Jolyne also develops the ability to stitch her wounds together. Similar to her father, Jolyne also cried "Ora, Ora!" while pummeling with her fists. Her stand, though perhaps not the strongest, was praised for being both extremely quick and flexible. Jolyne, unlike her father, was not a naturally awakened stand user. She received her stand when she was cut by an amulet given to her by Jotaro.

  • According to Hideto Azuma, Araki's editor at the time of Stone Ocean had requested that Jolyne's character was to be a man as Weekly Shonen Jump was a magazine for young teen boys. However, Araki insisted on Jolyne's gender, saying that the fact that readers would not accept a female lead was exactly the reason Jolyne had to be a woman.
