Biography

Origin

Jonothon "Jono" Evan Starsmore

Several years ago, he took his girlfriend Gayle out to a party where he went to kiss her in a coat room when his powers first manifested in a traumatic manner. (Weapon X v2 #16)

Generation X

He received an invitation to join the Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters by Professor Charles Xavier who offered to evaluate Jonothon's condition. Upon arriving in America, he was at Logan Airport at Boston where he was to meet with the X-Men as he was invited to join Generation X. Before he met them, he was attacked by Emplate who wanted to feast on Jonothon's powerful Mutant genes but was overwhelmed by his preys power. This along with the aid of Generation X led Emplate having to flee. (Generation X v1 #1)

Jono though came to be ashamed as he felt he should have been more careful and should have known the dangerous potential of his own power. Paige thanked him for sparing her the embarrassment of telling the others why he had freaked out. However, Jono misunderstood her, believing she was embarrassed for having shown interest in a freak like him. (Generation X v1 #7)

Several weeks later, Paige invited Jono to the Guthrie’s home for a Thanksgiving holiday. Both were rather awkward around each other, though, especially since Jono never talked about his own family. When they reached the farm and nobody was there to welcome them, Jono presumed it was due to his freakish looks, pretty much annoying Paige, who made it clear that with two mutants being part of the Guthrie family, they treat everyone with the same respect. When the pair searched through some old stuff of Paige’s, Jono saw a picture that had been taken of the Guthrie parents when they were quite happy. Jono told Paige that he could never be like her father and they could never have a real relationship like her parents had. He then left the Guthrie farm, leaving behind an angry Paige, who felt he believed - wrongly - that she needed coddling. (Generation X v1 #23)

For the next months, the two mutants avoided talking to each other. Eventually, the members of Generation X were captured by Black Tom Cassidy, who dumped them in the ocean, thousands of miles away from anywhere or anyone. Even out there, faced with the possibility of either drowning or dying of thirst, Paige and Jono managed to fight. (Generation X v1 #26)

He was still mute when Husk had to leave for Kentucky to tend to her ill mother. Husk told him she knew things had been rough for him but asked him to promise he’d stay until she return. He did and used his powers to burn a heart into the sheet of paper. Husk first raved about his growing control until she understood what he had been trying to say and hugged him. (Generation X v1 #44)

Over the following weeks, the telepaths’ powers slowly returned. Chamber’s was among the first, though he kept quiet about it at first. In his typically, morose way, he just didn’t feel he had a lot to talk about. (Generation X v1 #45)

Decimation

Badly injured, he was moved to a hospital in England where machines were used to keep him alive. During this time, he was assigned a therapist to help Jono in this time where he was approached by Pete Wisdom. Wisdom was coming to make an offer from the X-Men but whilst away from the room Jono came to be abducted. He was taken to Clan Akkaba where he was revealed to had been a descendant of Apocalypse who had healed him using their ancestors blood. This caused Jono's appearance to change where it matched En Sabah Nur and offered membership within the clan. However, he refused and despite this decision he was allowed to leave the secret society. He was then approached by Excalibur to join their ranks but he refused them as well where he stated he wanted to be left alone. Being re-powered, an energy signature revealed that Jono's abilities had increased to the point of making him a potential Omega-class Mutant. (New Excalibur v1 #9)

After the Age of X, Legion came to restore reality with his reality manipulation powers which led to Jono being restored to his old form as well as appearance. (New Mutants v3 #24)

House of X

After the establishment of the nation of Krakoa, he was one of many Mutants that came to reside on the living island that was the home of their people. (New Mutants v4 #1)

Overview

Personality and attributes

It was said that he was a private young man. (Generation X v1 #1)

Ever since his powers manifested, he suffered from bad dreams of the moment they left him in incredible pain and leaving untold damage to the area around him at the time. (Weapon X v2 #16)

He felt that being a Mutant had taken much from his life and believed it was a cost that was more than anyone had to pay. Jono felt a sense of kinship with Penance for this reason as he saw that they were both victims of the horrors of their bodies. (Generation X v1 #3)

It was said that he was distantly related to Clan Akkaba which made him a descendant of Apocalypse. He said that his great-grand-dad stopped believing in En Sabah Nur who he considered a mad god. However, he still branded children of his family with the Clan's tattoo when they were babies. (New Excalibur v1 #9)

Powers and abilities

He generated a bio-nuclear psionic biokinetic field inside of him. (Generation X v1 #1) This created a rampant psionic energy that inhabited his body. (Generation X v1 #3)

After the 'incident', it was said that communication was initially a chore for him. Without a mouth, he was able to speak psychically to others. (Generation X v1 #1) Initially, he claimed that for the most part that his range was limited though he was able to split his telepathic voice allowing him to carry two conversations at once. (Chamber v1 #4) Later on though, he was able to telepathically send messages to people to the other side of the planet. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #407) However, it was said that his telepathic side was not fully developed and he could do so much more than simply communication. (Uncanny X-Men v1 #404)

Chamber was seemingly not capable of probing thoughts but after a lot of training he could use his abilities to hear someone's thoughts if they intended to communicate with him. (Generation X v1 #71)

He could use the bionuclear energy within his body to feed the furnace within him. With this power, he could dismantle every atom and disperse it across space. Such an attack could destroy an opponent's body but it destroyed Chamber's body as well thus seemingly killing him. However, unconsciously, he was able to bring back his disjointed energy and reform himself. This saw him restoring his body exactly to the state he remembered of himself. (Generation X Annual v1 #1997)

Jono was later given the blood of his ancestor Apocalypse which restored him after the Decimation and his energy signature indicated that he was a potential Omega-class Mutant. (New Excalibur v1 #9)
