Biography
Origin
Katma Tui was a female being who was an inhabitant of the planet Korugar.
In fact, she was said to had led the rebellion against Sinestro. (Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn II v1 #4) She later testified against him before the Guardians, who imprisoned Sinestro in the Antimatter Universe, on the planet Qward. The Green Lantern Tomar-Re nominated Tui as Sinestro's replacement as guardian of Sector 1417, and Tui accepted. (Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn II v1 #6)
She was selected after the removal of Sinestro as protector of her world due to his abuse of power. As a result, the Guardians of the Universe sought out a new Power Battery possessor. They ultimately chose Katma Tui who fulfilled all their hopes in every aspect leading to her being inducted into the Green Lantern Corps. During her probationary period, she carried out all her Green Lantern duties in an exemplary manner. (Green Lantern v2 #30)
Green Lantern met Tui on Korugar and asked her for help in locating Sinestro. Korugar laws forbid her from confronting Sinestro unless he committed a crime on-planet, but happily directed Lantern to the Null Chamber where Sinestro was hiding. Sinestro tried to kill Lantern, freeing Tui to battle him, and with the battle turning against him Sinestro fled to Qward. (Green Lantern v2 #124)
John Stewart was then offered the role as Jordan's replacement but he would initially turn down the offer. This resulted in Katma projecting her anger towards Jordan upon Stewart, dismissed him as a coward, which provoked Stewart into changing his mind and accepting the job. (Green Lantern v2 #185)
The Guardians would later assign Katma to train John Stewart on Earth. (Green Lantern v2 #187)
When she returned to Earth, she joined John and the Green Lantern Corps on another mission to stop the newly-appointed Guy Gardner and his squad of villains attacking Qward's moon in the Antimatter Universe. (Green Lantern v2 #198)
Following the Crisis, the restriction for every Green Lantern to remain in one sector was lifted, allowing groups of Lanterns to settle in different planets. Katma went to Earth with John, where they settled along with an agglomeration of seven Green Lanterns in a Citadel in California. (Green Lantern Corps v1 #201)
On Oa, the Green Lantern Corps gathered to witness an unprecedented sight. After two point five billion years, the Zamarons reunited with the Guardians of the Universe.
The departure of the Guardians and the Zamarons for another plane of existence meant a change in responsibilities for the Green Lantern Corps. Hal Jordan and John Stewart were assigned to Earth to help usher in the next immortal race in the coming Millennium. Arisia and Katma Tui decided to join them on Earth.
The four Green Lanterns were joined by Kilowog of Bolovax Vik, Ch'p of H'Lven and Salakk. Now known as the Green Lantern Corps of Earth, the seven ring wielders pledged to serve the world and its people. Their costumes were redesigned to reflect their personalities, and John and Katma chose to visually link themselves with matching costumes. The Green Lanterns based themselves on the west coast and built a Citadel outside Los Angeles.
Legacy
The Blue Lantern Saint Walker uses his blue power ring to calm John Stewart's rage from Red Lantern. By reading his psyche, the ring is able to discern that creating an image of Katma Tui would best serve this purpose. After being surrounded in an illusion of flying with his late-wife for several moments, Stewart emerges with the belief that he would be able to see Katma again. (Green Lantern v4 #36) During the Blackest Night, black power rings were dispersed across the universe where they began reanimating the dead into members of the Black Lantern Corps. Among those that were resurrected in this manner was Katma Tui where her corpse became a Black Lantern who looked to harvest emotion from the living. (Blackest Night v1 #1)
After entering Emerald Space, Hal Jordan made numerous slain Green Lanterns inside that realm with Katma Tui being among them. She asked about John Stewart and asked Hal to tell her love to live his life. (Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps v1 #10)
