Biography

Hassan-I-Sabbah

It was known that years ago that he had me with another immortal named Vandal Savage who was seeking a means to alleviate the pain his body experienced from the immortal cancer cells that resided in him. Hassan-I-Sabbah offered a solution and in exchange for cybernetic upgrades for his Ghost Wolves he told Savage about Nanda Parbat. Though he did not known its location, he told Savage that secrets of the path to it were known to the Monks of Rama Kushna in the small nation of Bhutran. (Superman v1 #710)

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Khyber was a male human with a distinctly cybernetic form. He wore a crimson red hooded tunic with black pants and boots, over which he sported a heavy, grey, cybernetic suit of armor that was partially camouflaged by his cloak. His face, partly visible beneath the hood, was pale with pronounced features and shadowed, sunken eyes. The most striking aspect of his face was the visible cybernetic enhancement around his left eye, a black lens that suggested augmented vision and an advanced connection to his technology. His forearms and hands were also encased in the cybernetic armor, ending in wicked, sharp, metallic claws on his fingertips. (Superman v1 #657)

Khyber was portrayed as a profoundly unemotional and calculating strategist, a personality trait that was intentionally cultivated over centuries. Having been the historical figure Hassan-i-Sabbah, he used alchemy to shed all human traits of conscience, guilt, and emotion, transferring them into another immortal being named Sirocco. This made Khyber a remorseless and cold-blooded mastermind who saw all others as pawns in his grand designs. This emotional detachment enabled him to orchestrate apocalyptic events and engage in centuries-long power plays, viewing humanity not as a species to conquer out of passion, but as a problem to be solved and manipulated. His personality was defined by his patience and meticulous nature, exemplified by his history of silently maintaining authority over the Hashshashin and strategically destabilizing nations. Even when faced with powerful figures like Black Adam in the modern era, Khyber maintained an air of superiority and was dismissed by them as a madman, a label that did not bother him. He was a methodical and clinical villain, valuing control and the execution of his long-term plan above all else, and his first appearance established him as a threat far more patient and detached than Superman had ever faced. (Superman v1 #657)

Powers and abilities

Khyber displayed a formidable combination of ancient sorcery, advanced cybernetic technology, and centuries of calculated planning. His physical capabilities were notably enhanced by his cybernetic armor, which afforded him a high degree of durability and the ability to punch with enough force to cut Superman's lip. This was demonstrated during a protracted battle that left the future Superman badly weakened. Khyber's most devastating abilities, however, stemmed from his advanced robotics and nanomachinery. He commanded an army of robotic assassins known as Ghostwolves, which were a persistent threat to survivors in the apocalyptic future. After wounding Superman, Khyber infected him with 'nanotechnological poisons' that exacerbated the Kryptonian's weakness. Beyond direct combat, Khyber wielded the strategic power of a mastermind, having manipulated events for centuries. His true source of endurance came from alchemical practices that granted him immortality, allowing him to maintain his influence over millennia. (Superman v1 #657)
