Pre-Crisis

Percival Sheldrake

He was a British vigilante who models himself after the Knights of the Round Table, and also gentleman detective after the Batman, including having a teenage sidekick, the Squire. He is Percy Sheldrake, Earl of Wordenshire, and the Squire is his son Cyril. Instead of a Bat-Signal he is summoned by ringing the Wordenshire church bell. The Knight is a member of the Batmen of All Nations—also known as the Club of Heroes—an international team of superheroes whose careers were inspired by Batman's example. (Batman v1 #62)

Post-Crisis

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Percy Sheldrake came to be the original Knight until he was killed by his archenemy Springheeled Jack. (Batman v1 #668)

Knight (Cyril Sheldrake)

Pre-Crisis

Cyril Sheldrake

Post-Crisis

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Cyril Sheldrake was originally Squire to Percy Sheldrake, the original Knight, until Percy was killed by his archenemy Springheeled Jack. Following this, Cyril fell into a period of depression and turned to drugs and alcohol, which depleted his fortune. (Batman v1 #668)

Fortunately, he later came upon Beryl Hutchinson, a poor but kindhearted and intelligent commoner who helped to rehabilitate Cyril. After having been completely healed, he assumed the mantle of the second Knight, and made Beryl the third Squire. (Knight and Squire v1 #4)

Knight and Squire later joined the Ultramarine Corps, who operated out of the independent nation of Superbia. They were gathering a superhuman army to act as global peacekeepers. (JLA v1 #26)

Years later, when the Ultramarines' base of Superbia was taken over, the Ultramarines, including the Knight, became brainwashed by the combined efforts of Gorilla Grodd and the Sheeda. This resulted in Grodd attempting to use the Ultramarines to take over the Earth. Fortunately, Beryl managed to escape Grodd's grip and reached out to Batman, who led the efforts to liberate Superbia from Grodd's control. Following that incident, the Justice League banished the Ultramarines, including Knight, to the infant universe of Qwewq, believing that the Ultramarines' own recklessness was to blame for Grodd's rampage just as much as Grodd himself. Later, after the Ultramarines managed to sort out problems in the infant universe, the JLA allowed them to return to Earth. (JLA Classified v1 #3)

Knight and Squire temporarily relocated to Gotham City as members of the Network, a group of heroes whom the Bat-Family trusted to assist them if the need arose, in order to help quell the chaos that had erupted in the wake of Batman's death. Knight mostly worked with Nightwing. (Batman: Battle for the Cowl v1 #1)

Joining the ranks of Batman Incorporated, Cyril and Beryl soon found themselves caught in an explosion. As Cyril succeeded in resuscitating Beryl, he was grabbed from behind by Heretic and fatally injured with a broken neck. (Batman Incorporated v2 #6)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

Knight (Beryl Hutchinson)

Main Article: Beryl Hutchinson

Batman later arrived in England, where Knight and Squire had since returned. Batman met up with Squire, having already contacted Knight with the idea of locating a Lazarus Pit in England to resurrect Bruce Wayne. Knight, it seemed, was already looking for the pit, but had lost contact with Squire. Squire worked with Batman to track down the pit, dealing with Old King Coal and his cronies (Who were also looking for the pit) along the way. When they finally located the pit, Knight had already submerged Bruce Wayne's corpse in it. Out of the pit emerged what was actually a sophisticated clone of Bruce Wayne, created during Final Crisis. Knight and Squire, along with Batwoman, helped to fend of the monstrosity, which managed to escape. (Batman and Robin v1 #8)
