Kru-El is a male alien comic supervillain who features in DC Comics.

Biography

Pre-Crisis

Kru-El was a male Kryptonian who was an inhabitant of the planet Krypton where h was a member of the House of El. He was the son of Zim-El where he was nephew of Jor-El and a cousin to his own son Kal-El. (World of Krypton v1 #1)

Kru-El was a cousin of Jor-El who turned against Krypton by constructing the cache of Forbidden Weapons and brought terror to his world. His actions were deemed a crime and a blot to the honor of the House of El. As a result, Jor-El was with the Science Police as they stunned and apprehended him. (DC Comics Presents v1 #97) Kru-El soon escaped, and returned to being a weapons broker for a brief time. In revenge for his incarceration, Kru-El captured Jor-El and used a Mind-Transfer device to exchange Jor-El and Kal-El's minds. To his surprise, the mind of Kal-El that took up residence in Jor-El's body was from the future, and used Klurkor to subdue Kru-El; thus earning Kru's enmity before either even reached the Earth. (Superman v1 #402) When Kru-El and the other Phantom Zone inmates had used their collective telepathy to will a sickened Jor-El to nearly release them, the Phantom Zone Projector and Kru-El's stockpile of forbidden weapons were sealed in a chest and fired into space. (World of Krypton v1 #3)

Kru had also built a Mind-over-Matter Machine that would create whatever the wearer imagined, such as giant spiders, or even complex machines. Kru-El also wore a belt that could give a human Kryptonian powers — which he used on Lex Luthor to enlist his support. But Kru-El was treacherous, and quickly let slip that he was going to betray Luthor, which was his undoing, as Lex manipulated Kru's machine's to attract fake Gold K. Kru-El was again returned to the Phantom Zone. (Action Comics v1 #298)

Post-Crisis

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

Personality and attributes

He was regarded as being the first 'stain' on the House of El's name. (World of Krypton v1 #3)

In the House of El family tree, Kru-El was the son of Zim-El, which made him the cousin of Superman's father, Jor-El. (World of Krypton v1 #1)

Powers and abilities

One version of him existed in a simulated incarnation of Krypton where he came to be part of an elite hunting unit called the Hounds of Zod. (Superman: The Man of Steel v1 #111)

  • Kru-El was created by Leo Dorfman and Jim Mooney where he made his first appearance in Action Comics v1 #297 (February, 1963).

In other media

Television

  • In Young Justice, Kru-El appeared in the setting of the animated television series fourth season Phantoms where he was voiced by actor Nolan North.
