Biography

Origin

Detective Sawyer in Metropolis S.C.U. v1 #2.

Sawyer used to live in Star City where she joined the police force and came to rise to the position of lieutenant. She was nearly thirty years old when her superior Captain James Buchanan Sawyer embarked on a relationship with her and propose to Maggie. The two got married but had constant arguments at home with the only thing they had in common being police officers. Despite that, she got herself pregnant with the couple having a daughter together who they named Jamie Sawyer. For a time, the home life was peaceful but then the arguments started happening again with Maggie's husband not even coming home as a result. It was in this time that she determined the truth about herself that she was a lesbian and came out to her husband. He was said to had not taken the news well and their marriage came to quickly dissolve with the pair divorcing a year ago. The matter later went to court over the custody of their daughter with the judge concluding that Maggie was not a fit mother. As a result, James was granted full custody and Maggie did not appeal the decision as she did not want her daughter to go through hell from a lengthy court battle. She then decided to leave Star City and start her life over in Metropolis with her starting over at the police force in that city. (Superman v2 #15)

She and Major Crimes Unit arrived at the scene in central Metropolis during a public from the armed gunman called Bloodsport. Maggie Sawyer commanded the Special Crimes Unit during a high-stakes standoff in Metropolis after a veteran named Robert DuBois, operating under the alias Bloodsport, opened fire on a crowded pier. She directed her officers to establish a perimeter and oversaw the deployment of heavy artillery to counter the suspect's advanced weaponry, which allowed him to teleport firearms directly into his hands. When Superman arrived to intervene, she maintained her authority over the scene, initially viewing the hero with professional skepticism and insisting that the police handle the situation. She coordinated tactical maneuvers as Bloodsport used needles containing pressurized gas and high-tech rifles to cause mass casualties among the civilian population. Throughout the chaos, she monitored the status of her injured officers and worked to manage the panic of the crowd while the shooter ranted about the Vietnam War. Twenty five people were killed in the assault with Sawyer reporting the details to Superman. After the confrontation concluded, she stood her ground during a brief exchange with the Man of Steel, firmly establishing that the Special Crimes Unit would remain the primary force for dealing with metahuman threats in her city. (Superman v2 #4) Sawyer directed the Special Crimes Unit to engage an invisible and silent threat that appeared to be driving Superman into a state of erratic and violent behaviour in midtown Metropolis. She coordinated her officers as they deployed high-tech weaponry against the unseen antagonist, which was later identified as a massive red robot known as Klaash. Throughout the chaos, she received a distressing personal phone call from her ex-husband, James Sawyer, informing her that their young daughter, Jamie, had run away from home. Despite this personal crisis, she maintained her professional composure and led the SCU in their attempt to contain Superman when his powers spiralled out of control due to solar radiation manipulation. Following the destruction of the Klaash unit and the orbital satellite responsible for the disruption, she confronted Lex Luthor at his corporate offices. She stood her ground against Luthor and his legal team, explicitly stating her personal dislike for him despite his claims that the robot was merely a malfunctioning defence project. Her refusal to be intimidated prompted Luthor to order a background investigation into her past to uncover leverage against her. (Superman v2 #10)
