Mantis (Conquest: Frontier Wars)

The Mantis are an insectoid species that feature in Conquest: Frontier Wars.

History

The Mantis species, a name given to them after their encouner with Humanity, entered into space at an unknown period. They would engage in their inter-species war for numerous years and even attack the Celareons race after learning they possessed advanced wormhole technology. As thes conflicts continued, the Mantis would encounter a Terran Navy exploratory fleet which they destroyed which marked their official contact with the Human race after capturing a member of the fleet. A rescue force would be sent to save the captured Terran official which penetrated deeper into Mantis territory as the Mantis civil war continued between Queen Ver'Laks forces after her sister Warlord Ker'Tak.

Seeing the might of the Imperial Mantis Fleet, Earth would decide to assist Ker'Tak in the fight. In response to this, Ver'Lak would task her chief lieutenant, Warlord Malkor, to hunt down and destroy the homeworld of the Terrans. Attempts would be made to find and rescue Mantis warlords loyal to Ker'Tak in order to launch a large scale offensive against Malkors supply lines in the Orion Arm.

The emergence of the Celareon's race assistance to the alliance help tip the war aginst Ver'Laks forces but it was learnt that information had been given to the enemy Mantis forces which revealed vital information on Terran space. The source was the ambitious Admiral Smirnoff who attempted to pass the blame on Admiral Hawkes. This was done so in the mad hope that the Mantis would make him the leader of his species after they conquered Earth which resulted in a quick move to defend Earth from a full scale onslaught.

After defending Earth, the renegade Mantis would have their territory assaulted. Malkor had nestled his forces in the heart of Mantis space in order to develop a superweapon to win the war which was capable of rendering entire worlds uninhabitable. The alliance of loyalist Mantis, Celareon and Humans assault the base before the launch of the weapon and succeed in destroying it, Ver'Lak and Malkor. The result of the Mantis Civil War saw the destruction of thousands of ships while the Mantis attempted to rebuild.

Overview

The "Mantis" were an insectoid species that developed a hive-like social structure which is ruled by the Queen. Unlike Terran insects, the Mantis only posess one Queen with the firstborn female offspring serving as the new heir of the throne. This has been the source of numerous sibling rivalries and can lead to infighting among the race. The race possess a high reproductive rate which means they are constantly on the search for new worlds, even if they must conquer them.

Driven by the need for new worlds to serve as homes, the Mantis created a powerful fleet to further their goals. Their mindset means that they tend to prefer swarm tactics and send large fleets of fighters supported by carriers into enemy defenses in order to crush them without putting the carriers themselves in jeopardy. This means that their strongest ship is the Tiamat Supercarrier.

The race tend to consider all other races inferior to themselves.
