The Maquis were an organization that formed in the 2370 where it operated within the Alpha Quadrant of the Milky Way galaxy.
The Maquis were said to had rejected the Cardassian/Federation Alliance treaty in 2367. (VOY: Dreadnought)
In the aftermath, the Maquis were effectively destroyed with most wiped out and only a lucky few surviving within Federation prisons. (Episode: Hunters)

- In the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion (2000), Jeri Taylor commented, "we knew that we wanted to include a renegade element in Voyager, and that the show would involve a ship housing both Starfleet people and those idealistic freedom fighters that the Federation felt were outlaws [i.e., the Maquis]."
