Biography

Origin

Maria Carbonell

During her youth, Maria dated industrialist Obadiah Stane, although she was not happy with their relationship. While staying in Monaco during a flight scale, she slip past her bodyguards into a casino, and deliberately lost large sums of money at baccart. The owner of the casino, Howard Stark, noticed Maria being forcefully escorted by her bodyguards and tried to stop her. He tracked her down and visited her at their hotel room. Stark charmed her and together they beat up her bodyguards, driving off and formally introducing themselves to each other. (Invincible Iron Man v1 #503)

At some point, Howard Stark was involved in Project Tomorrow where he created a computer named Mistress that was imprinted with the brain patterns of Maria Stark. (Avengers Annual v1 #9)

She along with her husband Howard attempted to get a child but Maria was unable to become pregnant and the doctors stated she would be unable to bear a healthy offspring. This led to Howard going around the world to people in California, London, Tibet, the Eternal City and even Mount Wundagore but each proved to be a failure. However, at Nevada he met an alien Grey who offered him a solution through a captive Rigellian Recorder. To free the robot, Howard assembled the Stark Seven that consisted of Jimmy Woo, the Bear, Nessa the Kitten, Dum Dum Dugan and Thunderbolt Ross. Together, they helped free the Recorder from his captivity in a Grey crime family. (Iron Man v5 #10) Recorder #451 proceeded with aiding the Starks but on the condition that the child be modified with a goal of accelerating humanity's technological development to withstand the cosmic forces in the universe that had now turned their eye to Earth. (Iron Man v5 #11) Howard, however, did not trust the alien robot and later learnt that the Recorder had engineered a suicide gene into his son so that he would slowly die after reaching 30 years of age. Stark then worked in secret to produce drugs to neutralize the effect but this had the consequence of leading to his son being crippled as a result. To hide the boy from Recorder #451, the Starks placed their son in a private ward and adopted Tony Stark to be their child. (Iron Man v5 #17)

Republic Oil's Simon Krieger after approval from Hugh Jones plotted for the murders of Howard and Maria Stark. (Iron Man: The Iron Age v1 #1)

Legacy

Within the virtual eScape world, a facsimile of Maria Stark was adopted by Tony Stark's Motherboard system which attempted to claim him as her son. This brought her into Amanda Armstrong who was Stark's biological mother after she became trapped within the virtual reality space. (Tony Stark: Iron Man v1 #8)

Iron Man confronted Motherboard and Arsenal on the escape when Arno Stark went into the escape, discovering that Tony's opponents have the digital engrams of their parents. When the escape system shut down, these digital engrams were salvaged by Arno. (Tony Stark: Iron Man v1 #11)

Arno would have breakfast with the duplicates of Howard and Maria following a nightmare about the Extinction Entity. (Iron Man 2020 v2 #1) Tony as Mark One kater learnt what Arno had done to create duplicates of their parents following a fight between the pair. Tony mentioned how Motherboard killed F.R.I.D.A.Y. where Maria stated that she did it out of love for her son. (Iron Man 2020 v2 #3) At Port Authority, Iron Man catches up to the duplicates of Howard and Maria, who are instructed not to leave the safety of Brain Tower. Their condition gets worse because they left Brain Tower, and Arno had to use his DNA to fill out the missing pieces when creating them. They suddenly stop moving as Arno plans to fix them, and Tony. Arno works on reviving his parents by recreating the Arsenal and Mistress' bodies from the escape. (Iron Man 2020 v2 #4) Arno heads to the Stark Space Station with Arsenal and Mistress, who now possess the memories of Howard and Maria. The two tell Arno that they are proud. When Tony uses the Thirteenth Floor to reach the Stark Space Station and confront Arno, Arsenal and Motherboard fight his allies until the arrival of the Extinction Entity. (Iron Man 2020 v2 #5) As everyone engaged the Extinction Entity, Tony, Arno, Rescue, Machine Man, Jocasta, Motherboard, and Arsenal pushed the Extinction Entity close to Earth's orbit as the Avengers, Force Works, and the A.I. Army attacked its tentacles. It then turned out that the Extinction Entity was just a simulation and was the result of the disease that Arno thought he was cured of revealing that the holographic armor made from the escape is now part of Arno's life support which allowed Motherboard and Arsenal to download themselves to shape Arno's virtual world. (Iron Man 2020 v2 #6)
